1 Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord; for he is good: For his mercy [endures] forever.
106:1 Praise Yahweh! Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.
2 Who shall tell the mighty acts of the Lord? [Who] shall cause all his praises to be heard?
106:2 Who can utter the mighty acts of Yahweh, or fully declare all his praise?
3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, And do righteousness at all times.
106:3 Blessed are those who keep justice. Blessed is one who does what is right at all times.
4 Remember us, O Lord, with the favor [thou hast] to thy people: Visit us with thy salvation;
106:4 Remember me, Yahweh, with the favor that you show to your people. Visit me with your salvation,
5 That we may behold the good of thine elect, That we may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, That we may glory with thine inheritance.
106:5 that I may see the prosperity of your chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance.
6 We have sinned with our fathers, We have transgressed, we have done unrighteously.
106:6 We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.
7 Our fathers in Egypt understood not thy wonders, And remembered not the multitude of thy mercy; But provoked [him] as they went up by the Red Sea.
106:7 Our fathers didn’t understand your wonders in Egypt. They didn’t remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses, but were rebellious at the sea, even at the Red Sea.
8 Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, That he might cause his mighty power to be known.
106:8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power known.
9 And he rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up: So he led them through the deep as through the wilderness.
106:9 He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up; so he led them through the depths, as through a desert.
10 And he saved them out of the hand of them that hated [them], And redeemed them out of the hand of the enemy.
106:10 He saved them from the hand of him who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
11 The water covered those that oppressed them: There was not one of them left.
106:11 The waters covered their adversaries. There was not one of them left.
12 Then they believed his words, And celebrated his praise.
106:12 Then they believed his words. They sang his praise.
13 They made haste, they forgot his works; They waited not for his counsel.
106:13 They soon forgot his works. They didn’t wait for his counsel,
14 And they lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tempted God in the dry [land].
106:14 but gave in to craving in the desert, and tested God in the wasteland.
15 And he gave them their request, And sent fullness into their souls.
106:15 He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul.
16 They provoked Moses also in the camp, And Aaron the holy one of the Lord.
106:16 They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron, Yahweh’s saint.
17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And closed upon the congregation of Abiram.
106:17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.
18 And a fire was kindled in their congregation, And a flame burned up the sinners.
106:18 A fire was kindled in their company. The flame burned up the wicked.
19 And they made a calf in Horeb, And worshiped the graven image,
106:19 They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped a molten image.
20 And they changed their glory Into the similitude of a calf that feeds on grass.
106:20 Thus they exchanged their glory for an image of a bull that eats grass.
21 They forgot God that saved them, Who had wrought great deeds in Egypt;
106:21 They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt,
22 Wondrous [works] in the land of Ham, And terrible things at the Red Sea.
106:22 wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome things by the Red Sea.
23 So he said that he would have destroyed them, Had not Moses his chosen Stood before him in the breach, To turn [him] away from the fierceness of his anger, so that he should not destroy them.
106:23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn’t destroy them.
24 Moreover they set at nought the desirable land, And believed not his word.
106:24 Yes, they despised the pleasant land. They didn’t believe his word,
25 And they murmured in their tents: They hearkened not to the voice of the Lord.
106:25 but murmured in their tents, and didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice.
26 So he lifted up his hand against them, To cast them down in the wilderness;
106:26 Therefore he swore to them that he would overthrow them in the wilderness,
27 And to cast down their seed among the nations, And to scatter them in the countries.
106:27 that he would overthrow their offspring among the nations, and scatter them in the lands.
28 They were joined also to Baal-peor, And ate the sacrifices of the dead. And they provoked him with their devices;
106:28 They joined themselves also to Baal Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
29 And destruction was multiplied among them.
106:29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their deeds. The plague broke in on them.
30 Then Phinehas stood up, and made atonement: And the plague ceased.
106:30 Then Phinehas stood up and executed judgment, so the plague was stopped.
31 And it was counted to him for righteousness, To all generations forever.
106:31 That was credited to him for righteousness, for all generations to come.
32 They provoked him also at the water of Strife, And Moses was hurt for their sakes;
106:32 They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, so that Moses was troubled for their sakes;
33 For they provoked his spirit, And he spoke [unadvisedly] with his lips.
106:33 because they were rebellious against his spirit, he spoke rashly with his lips.
34 They destroyed not the nations which the Lord told them [to destroy];
106:34 They didn’t destroy the peoples, as Yahweh commanded them,
35 But were mingled with the heathen, And learned their works.
106:35 but mixed themselves with the nations, and learned their works.
36 And they served their graven images; And it became an offense to them.
106:36 They served their idols, which became a snare to them.
37 And they sacrificed their sons And their daughters to devils,
106:37 Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.
38 And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was defiled with blood,
106:38 They shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. The land was polluted with blood.
39 And was polluted with their works; And they went a-whoring with their own devices.
106:39 Thus they were defiled with their works, and prostituted themselves in their deeds.
40 So the Lord was very angry with his people, And he abhorred his inheritance.
106:40 Therefore Yahweh burned with anger against his people. He abhorred his inheritance.
41 And he delivered them into the hands of [their] enemies; And they that hated them ruled over them.
106:41 He gave them into the hand of the nations. Those who hated them ruled over them.
42 And their enemies oppressed them, And they were brought down under their hands.
106:42 Their enemies also oppressed them. They were brought into subjection under their hand.
43 Many a time he delivered them; But they provoked him by their counsel, And they were brought low by their iniquities.
106:43 He rescued them many times, but they were rebellious in their counsel, and were brought low in their iniquity.
44 Yet the Lord looked upon their affliction, When he heard their petition.
106:44 Nevertheless he regarded their distress, when he heard their cry.
45 And he remembered his covenant, And repented according to the multitude of his mercy.
106:45 He remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.
46 And he caused them to be pitied In the sight of all who carried them captive.
106:46 He made them also to be pitied by all those who carried them captive.
47 Save us, O Lord our God, And gather us from among the heathen, That we may give thanks to thy holy name, That we may glory in thy praise.
106:47 Save us, Yahweh, our God, gather us from among the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, to triumph in your praise!
48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting and to everlasting; And all the people shall say, Amen, Amen.
106:48 Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting! Let all the people say, “Amen.” Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 106.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CV)

    This Psalm is the first of those to which is prefixed the word Allelujah; the meaning of which word, or rather two words, is, Praise the Lord. For this reason he beginneth with praises: "O confess unto the Lord, and call upon His Name" (ver.

These things found I there; but I fed not on them.

But Phinehas became a manslayer, and "it was counted unto him" (so He speaks) "for righteousness:" and Abraham again on becoming not a man-slayer only, but (which was far worse) the …
