1 Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord, and call upon his name; Declare his works among the heathen.
105:1 Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Make his doings known among the peoples.
2 Sing to him, yea, sing praises to him: Tell forth all his wonderful works.
105:2 Sing to him, sing praises to him! Tell of all his marvelous works.
3 Glory in his holy name: Let the heart of them that seek the Lord rejoice.
105:3 Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.
4 Seek ye the Lord, and be strengthened; Seek his face continually.
105:4 Seek Yahweh and his strength. Seek his face forever more.
5 Remember his wonderful works that he has done; His wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
105:5 Remember his marvelous works that he has done: his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,
6 [Ye] seed of Abraham, his servants, [Ye] children of Jacob, his chosen ones.
105:6 you offspring of Abraham, his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.
7 He is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth.
105:7 He is Yahweh, our God. His judgments are in all the earth.
8 He has remembered his covenant forever, The word which he commanded for a thousand generations:
105:8 He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,
9 Which he established as a covenant to Abraham, And [he remembered] his oath to Isaac.
105:9 the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac,
10 And he established it to Jacob for an ordinance, And to Israel for an everlasting covenant;
105:10 and confirmed it to Jacob for a statute; to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
11 Saying, To thee will I give the land of Canaan, The line of your inheritance:
105:11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance,”
12 When they were few in number, Very few, and sojourners in it.
105:12 when they were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners in it.
13 And they went from nation to nation, And from [one] kingdom to another people.
105:13 They went about from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people.
14 He suffered no man to wrong them; And he rebuked kings for their sakes:
105:14 He allowed no one to do them wrong. Yes, he reproved kings for their sakes,
15 [Saying], Touch not my anointed ones; And do my prophets no harm.
105:15 “Don’t touch my anointed ones! Do my prophets no harm!”
16 Moreover he called for a famine upon the land; He broke the whole support of bread.
105:16 He called for a famine on the land. He destroyed the food supplies.
17 He sent a man before them; Joseph was sold for a slave.
105:17 He sent a man before them. Joseph was sold for a slave.
18 They hurt his feet with fetters; His soul passed into iron,
105:18 They bruised his feet with shackles. His neck was locked in irons,
19 Until the time that his cause came on; The word of the Lord tried him as fire.
105:19 until the time that his word happened, and Yahweh’s word proved him true.
20 The king sent and loosed him; [Even] the prince of the people, and let him go free.
105:20 The king sent and freed him, even the ruler of peoples, and let him go free.
21 He made him Lord over his house, And ruler of all his substance;
105:21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all of his possessions,
22 To chastise his rulers at his pleasure, And to teach his elders wisdom.
105:22 to discipline his princes at his pleasure, and to teach his elders wisdom.
23 Israel also came into Egypt, And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
105:23 Israel also came into Egypt. Jacob lived in the land of Ham.
24 And he increased his people greatly, And made them stronger than their enemies.
105:24 He increased his people greatly, and made them stronger than their adversaries.
25 And he turned their heart to hate his people, To deal craftily with his servants.

26 He sent forth Moses his servant, [And] Aaron whom he had chosen.
105:26 He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27 He established among them his signs, And [his] wonders in the land of Ham.
105:27 They performed miracles among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.
28 He sent forth darkness, and made it dark; Yet they rebelled against his words.
105:28 He sent darkness, and made it dark. They didn’t rebel against his words.
29 He turned their waters into blood, And slew their fish.
105:29 He turned their waters into blood, and killed their fish.
30 Their land produced frogs abundantly, In the chambers of their kings.
105:30 Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the rooms of their kings.
31 He spoke, and the dog fly came, And lice in all their coasts.
105:31 He spoke, and swarms of flies came, and lice in all their borders.
32 He turned their rain into hail, [And sent] flaming fire in their land.
105:32 He gave them hail for rain, with lightning in their land.
33 And he smote their vines and their fig trees; And broke every tree of their coast.
105:33 He struck their vines and also their fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke, and the locust came, And caterpillars innumerable,
105:34 He spoke, and the locusts came with the grasshoppers, without number.
35 And devoured all the grass in their land, And devoured the fruit of their ground.
105:35 They ate up every plant in their land, and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He smote also every firstborn of their land, The firstfruits of all their labor.
105:36 He struck also all the firstborn in their land, the first fruits of all their manhood.
37 And he brought them out with silver and gold; And there was not a feeble one among their tribes.
105:37 He brought them out with silver and gold. There was not one feeble person among his tribes.
38 Egypt rejoiced at their departing; For the fear of them fell upon them.
105:38 Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen on them.
39 He spread out a cloud for a covering to them, And fire to give them light by night.
105:39 He spread a cloud for a covering, fire to give light in the night.
40 They asked, and the quail came, And he satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
105:40 They asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of the sky.
41 He clove the rock, and the waters flowed; Rivers ran in dry places.
105:41 He opened the rock, and waters gushed out. They ran as a river in the dry places.
42 For he remembered his holy word, Which [he promised] to Abraham his servant.
105:42 For he remembered his holy word, and Abraham, his servant.
43 And he brought out his people with exultation, And his chosen with joy;
105:43 He brought his people out with joy, his chosen with singing.
44 And gave them the lands of the heathen; And they inherited the labors of the people;
105:44 He gave them the lands of the nations. They took the labor of the peoples in possession,
45 That they might keep his ordinances, And diligently seek his law.
105:45 that they might keep his statutes, and observe his laws. Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 105.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CIV)

"Bless the Lord, O my soul." Let the soul of us all, made one in Christ, say this. "O Lord my God, Thou art magnified exceedingly!" (ver. 1). Where art Thou magnified? "Confession and beauty Thou hast put on." Confess ye, that ye may be beautified, that He may put you on. "Clothed with light as a garment" (ver. 2).

  2. Quotes verse 105:15 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 9–11)

… commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men; but my mercy will I not take away from him," meaning by stripes the strokes of correction. Hence that saying, "Touch ye not my christs." For what else is that than, Do not harm them?

  3. Quotes verse 105:15 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XXI)

Having therefore become partakers of Christ, ye are properly called Christs, and of you God said, Touch not My Christs, or anointed.

  4. Quotes verse 105:37 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters XXV–XXVI)

This is the case where, as we have observed, it often stands instead of with; as for instance, "I will go into thy house in burnt offerings," instead of with burnt offerings and "he brought them forth also by silver and gold," that is to say with silver and gold and "thou goest not forth in our armies" instead of …

  5. Quotes verse 105:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 6–7)

And for the same reason we cannot better interpret the words of the psalm, "He hath been mindful of His covenant for ever, the word which He commanded to a thousand generations," than by understanding it to mean "to all generations." "And he cast him into the abyss,"--i.e., cast the devil into the abyss.
