1 In their tribulation, they will arise early to me. Come, let us return to the Lord.
1 “Come! Let’s return to Yahweh; for he has torn us to pieces, and he will heal us; he has injured us, and he will bind up our wounds.
2 For he has seized us, and he will heal us. He will strike, and he will cure us.
2 After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us up, and we will live before him.
3 He will revive us after two days; on the third day he will raise us up, and we will live in his sight. We will understand, and we will continue on, so that we may know the Lord. His landing place has been prepared like the first light of morning, and he will come to us like the early and the late rains of the land.
3 Let’s acknowledge Yahweh. Let’s press on to know Yahweh. As surely as the sun rises, Yahweh will appear. He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain that waters the earth.”
4 What am I to do with you, Ephraim? What am I to do with you, Judah? Your mercy is like the morning mist, and like the dew passing away in the morning.
4 “Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Judah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.
5 Because of this, I have cut them with the prophets, I have slain them with the words of my mouth; and your opinions will depart like the light.
5 Therefore I have cut them to pieces with the prophets; I killed them with the words of my mouth. Your judgments are like a flash of lightning.
6 For I desired mercy and not sacrifice, and knowledge of God more than holocausts.
6 For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant; in this, they have been dishonest with me.
7 But they, like Adam, have broken the covenant. They were unfaithful to me there.
8 Gilead is a city that manufactures idols; it has been tripped up by family relations.
8 Galaad, ciudad de obradores de iniquidad, ensuciada de sangre.
8 Gilead is a city of those who work iniquity; it is stained with blood.
9 And, like those who rob with skillful words, they, by conspiring with the priests, bring a death sentence to travelers on a pilgrimage from Shechem; for they have been performing evil deeds.
9 As gangs of robbers wait to ambush a man, so the company of priests murder on the path toward Shechem, committing shameful crimes.
10 I have seen horrible things in the house of Israel; the fornications of Ephraim are there. Israel has been contaminated.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing. There is prostitution in Ephraim. Israel is defiled.
11 But you, Judah, set a harvest for yourself, while I reverse the captivity of my people.
11 “Also, Judah, there is a harvest appointed for you, when I restore the fortunes of my people.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 6:6 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter XVII)

As God, when teaching them His will in Hosea the prophet, said, "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt-offerings." Besides, our Lord also exhorted them to the same effect, when He said, "But if ye had known what [this] meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the …

In the epistle entitled "To the Hebrews" it is said, "To do good and to communicate, forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased." And so, when it is written, "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice," nothing else is meant than that one sacrifice is preferred to another; for that which in common speech is called sacrifice is …

  3. Quotes verse 6:4 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXII)

This, for example, was His complaint against certain Jews, when He said, "My mercy is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away." And His meaning is like this; "I indeed have supplied all my part, but ye, as a hot sun coming over scatters both the cloud and the dew, and makes them vanish, so …

  5. Quotes verse 6:2 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVIII, Chapters 26–29)

… according to the flesh." This prophet has also foretold the resurrection of Christ on the third day, as it behoved to be foretold, with prophetic loftiness, when he says, "He will heal us after two days, and in the third day we shall rise again." In agreement with this the apostle says to us, "If ye be risen with Christ, …
