1 A song. A psalm of Asaph. God, please do not stay silent! You can't remain unmoved! God, you must not keep quiet!
1 Canción: Salmo de Asaph. OH Dios, no tengas silencio: no calles, oh Dios, ni te estés quieto.
1 A song. A Psalm by Asaph. God, don’t keep silent. Don’t keep silent, and don’t be still, God.
2 Can't you hear the roars of your enemies? Can't you see how those who hate you are defiantly lifting up their heads?
2 For, behold, your enemies are stirred up. Those who hate you have lifted up their heads.
3 They invent cunning plans to conspire against your people; they plot against those you treasure.
3 They conspire with cunning against your people. They plot against your cherished ones.
4 They say, “Come on! Let's destroy them as a nation so the name ‘Israel’ will be completely forgotten.”
4 “Come,” they say, “let’s destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”
5 They all agree in their conspiracy; they've made a treaty together to attack you—
5 Por esto han conspirado de corazón á una, contra ti han hecho liga;
5 For they have conspired together with one mind. They form an alliance against you.
6 the people of Edom, the Ishmaelites, Moab, and the Hagirites;
6 Los pabellones de los Idumeos y de los Ismaelitas, Moab y los Agarenos;
6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab, and the Hagrites;
7 the people of Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, and the inhabitants of Tyre.
7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assyria too has joined them, allied with the descendants of Lot. Selah.
(Selah.)
8 Assyria also is joined with them. They have helped the children of Lot. Selah.
9 Do to them what you did to Midian, what you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River.
9 Hazles como á Madián; como á Sísara, como á Jabín en el arroyo de Cisón;
9 Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon;
10 They were destroyed at Endor and became like manure to fertilize the ground.
10 who perished at Endor, who became as dung for the earth.
11 Make their leaders like Oreb and Zeeb; all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna,
11 Pon á ellos y á sus capitanes como á Oreb y como á Zeeb; y como á Zeba y como á Zalmunna, á todos sus príncipes;
11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 for they said, “Let's take the pastures of God for ourselves!”
12 who said, “Let’s take possession of God’s pasture lands.”
13 My God, make them like whirling tumbleweeds, chaff blown away by the wind.
13 My God, make them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind.
14 Just like fire that burns the forest, a flame that sets fire to the mountains,
14 As the fire that burns the forest, as the flame that sets the mountains on fire,
15 in the same way chase them down with your storm, terrify them with your whirlwind.
15 so pursue them with your tempest, and terrify them with your storm.
16 Shame them in defeat so that they come to you, Lord!
16 Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, Yahweh.
17 Make them ashamed, terrify them forever so that they die in disgrace.
17 Sean afrentados y turbados para siempre; y sean deshonrados, y perezcan.
17 Let them be disappointed and dismayed forever. Yes, let them be confounded and perish;
18 Let them understand that you alone, called the Lord, are the Most High who rules over all the earth.
18 that they may know that you alone, whose name is Yahweh, are the Most High over all the earth.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXII)

    This Psalm, like others similarly named, was so entitled either from the name of the man who wrote it, or from the explanation of that same name, so as to refer in meaning to the Synagogue, which Asaph signifies; especially as this is intimated in the first verse. For it begins, "God stood in the synagogue of gods" (ver. 1).

  2. Quotes verse 83:16 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIV, Chapters 12–13)

    And this is averred by the sacred Psalmist when he says, "Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek Thy name, O Lord;" that is, that they who have pleased themselves in seeking their own glory may be pleased and satisfied with Thee in seeking Thy glory.

  3. Quotes verse 83:3 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book III, Chapters XII–XIV)

    Sometimes it signifies exhortation: as when the divine apostle says, Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord; yet I give my judgment: sometimes it means counsel, as when the prophet David says, They have taken crafty counsel against Thy people: sometimes it means a decree, as when we read in Daniel, Concerning whom (or, what) went …
