2 “The kingdom of the heavens was likened to a man, a king, who made wedding feasts for his son, 2 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a wedding feast for his son,
3 and he sent forth his servants to call those having been called to the wedding feasts, and they were not willing to come. 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come.
4 Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Say to those who have been called: Behold, I prepared my early meal, my oxen and the fatlings have been killed, and all things [are] ready, come to the wedding feasts; 4 Again he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My cattle and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding feast!”’
5 and they, having disregarded [it], went away, one to his own field, and the other to his merchandise; 5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise;
6 and the rest, having laid hold on his servants, mistreated and slew [them]. 6 and the rest grabbed his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.
7 And the king having heard, was angry, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire; 7 When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
8 then he says to his servants, The wedding feast indeed is ready, and those called were not worthy, 8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy.
9 be going, then, on to the cross-ways, and as many as you may find, call to the wedding feasts. 9 Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the wedding feast.’
10 And those servants, having gone forth to the ways, gathered all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the wedding was filled with those reclining. 10 Those servants went out into the highways and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.
11 And the king having come in to view those reclining, saw there a man not clothed with wedding clothes, 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn’t have on wedding clothing,
12 and he says to him, Friend, how did you come in here, not having wedding clothes? And he was speechless. 12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?’ He was speechless.
13 Then the king said to the servants, Having bound his feet and hands, take him up and cast forth into the outer darkness, there will be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth; 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’
14 for many are called, and few chosen.” 14 For many are called, but few chosen.”
15 Then the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare Him in words, 15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk.
16 and they send to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we have known that You are true, and the way of God in truth You teach, and You are not caring for anyone, for You do not look to the face of men; 16 They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach; for you aren’t partial to anyone.
17 tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?” 17 Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
17 εἰπὲ οὖν ἡμῖν, τί σοι δοκεῖ; ἔξεστι δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι ἢ οὔ;
18 And Jesus having known their wickedness, said, “Why do you tempt Me, hypocrites? 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?
18 γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πονηρίαν αὐτῶν εἶπε· τί με πειράζετε, ὑποκριταί;
19 Show Me the tribute-coin.” And they brought to Him a denarius; 19 Show me the tax money.” They brought to him a denarius.
20 and He says to them, “Whose [is] this image and the inscription?” 20 He asked them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”
20 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· τίνος ἡ εἰκὼν αὕτη καὶ ἡ ἐπιγραφή;
21 They say to Him, “Caesar’s”; then He says to them, “Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God”; 21 They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
22 and having heard they wondered, and having left Him they went away. 22 When they heard it, they marveled, and left him and went away.
23 In that day there came near to Him Sadducees who are saying there is not a resurrection, and they questioned Him, saying, 23 On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to him. They asked him,
24 “Teacher, Moses said if anyone may die having no children, his brother will marry his wife, and will raise up seed to his brother. 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.’
25 And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married died, and having no seed, he left his wife to his brother; 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother.
26 in like manner also the second, and the third, to the seventh, 26 In the same way, the second also, and the third, to the seventh.
27 and last of all the woman also died; 27 After them all, the woman died.
28 therefore in the resurrection, of which of the seven will she be wife—for all had her?” 28 In the resurrection therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her.”
29 And Jesus answering said to them, “You go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God; 29 But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 for in the resurrection they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in Heaven. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven.
31 And concerning the resurrection of the dead, did you not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying, 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,
32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.” 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
33 And having heard, the multitudes were astonished at His teaching; 33 When the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
34 and the Pharisees, having heard that He silenced the Sadducees, were gathered together to Him; 34 But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.
35 and one of them, a lawyer, questioned, tempting Him, and saying, 35 One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.
36 “Teacher, which [is] the great command in the Law?” 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”
36 διδάσκαλε, ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ;
37 And Jesus said to him, “You will love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your understanding— 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 this is a first and great command; 38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 and the second [is] like to it: You will love your neighbor as yourself; 39 A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 on these—the two commands—all the Law and the Prophets hang.” 40 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
41 And the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus questioned them, 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
42 saying, “What do you think concerning the Christ? Of whom is He Son?” They say to Him, “Of David.” 42 saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “Of David.”
43 He says to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him Lord, saying, 43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 The LORD said to my Lord, || Sit at My right hand, || Until I may make Your enemies Your footstool? 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’?
44 εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου, κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου;
45 If then David calls Him Lord, how is He his son?” 45 “If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
45 εἰ οὖν Δαυῒδ καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον, πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστι;
46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did any dare question Him from that day [on]. 46 No one was able to answer him a word, neither did any man dare ask him any more questions from that day forward.
