1 O da biste malo potrpeli moje bezumlje! No i potrpite me.
6 Jer ako sam i prostak u reči, ali u razumu nisam. No u svemu smo poznati među vama.
8 He despojado las otras iglesias, recibiendo salario para ministraros á vosotros.
Bog zna. A šta činim i činiću,
13 Jer takvi lažni apostoli i prevarljivi poslenici pretvaraju se u apostole Hristove.
14 I nije čudo, jer se sam sotona pretvara u anđela svetla.
19 Jer ljubazno primate bezumne kad ste sami mudri.
22 Jesu li Jevreji? I ja sam. Jesu li Izrailjci? I ja sam. Jesu li seme Avraamovo? I ja sam.
22 ¿Son Hebreos? yo también. ¿Son Israelitas? yo también. ¿Son simiente de Abraham? también yo.
23 Jesu li sluge Hristove? (Ne govorim po mudrosti) ja sam još više. Više sam se trudio, više sam boja podneo, više puta sam bio u tamnici, mnogo puta sam dolazio do straha smrtnog;
24 od Jevreja primio sam pet puta četrdeset manje jedan udarac;
25 Tres veces he sido azotado con varas; una vez apedreado; tres veces he padecido naufragio; una noche y un día he estado en lo profundo [de la mar];
26 Mnogo puta sam putovao, bio sam u strahu na vodama, u strahu od hajduka, u strahu od rodbine, u strahu od neznabožaca, u strahu u gradovima, u strahu u pustinji, u strahu na moru, u strahu među lažnom braćom;
26 En caminos muchas veces, peligros de ríos, peligros de ladrones, peligros de los de [mi] nación, peligros de los Gentiles, peligros en la ciudad, peligros en el desierto, peligros en la mar, peligros entre falsos hermanos;
27 u trudu i poslu, u mnogom nespavanju, u gladovanju i žeđi, u mnogom pošćenju, u zimi i golotinji;
27 En trabajo y fatiga, en muchas vigilias, en hambre y sed, en muchos ayunos, en frío y en desnudez;
29 ¿Quién enferma, y yo no enfermo? ¿Quién se escandaliza, y yo no me quemo?
32 U Damasku neznabožački knez cara Arete čuvaše grad Damask i htede da me uhvati;
32 En Damasco, el gobernador de la provincia del rey Aretas guardaba la ciudad de los Damascenos para prenderme;
33 i kroz prozor spustiše me u kotarici preko zida, i izbegoh iz njegovih ruku.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 11:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Corinthians (Homily XXIII)

    Being about to enter upon his own praises he uses much previous correction. And he does this not once or twice, although the necessity of the subject, and what he had often said, were sufficient excuse for him.

  2. Quotes verse 11:14 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book X, Chapters XLI–XLIII)

    For the devil it was, transforming himself into an angel of light. And he much allured proud flesh, in that he had no fleshly body.

  3. Quotes verse 11:12 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXII)

    Wherefore Paul also said, "That wherein they glory, they may be found even as we." But if when we are in a strange country, and are going unto persons unknown to us, we must seek nothing more than our food for the day, much more when abiding at home.

  4. Quotes verse 11:14 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IV)

    The devil also transfigures himself into an angel of light; not that he may reascend to where he was, for having made his heart hard as an anvil, he has henceforth a will that cannot repent; but in order that he may envelope those who are living an Angelic life in a mist of blindness, and a pestilent condition …

  5. Quotes verse 11:3 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XII–XV)

    … not in his own voice, doth he call on that other deep, for whom being jealous he feareth, lest that, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so their minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in our Bridegroom, Thine only Son. What a light of beauty will that be when "we shall see Him as He …
