2 A Gospod mu reče: Šta ti je to u ruci? A on odgovori: Štap.
3 A Bog mu reče: Baci ga na zemlju. I baci ga na zemlju, a on posta zmija.
5 To učini, reče Gospod, da veruju da ti se javio Gospod Bog otaca njihovih, Bog Avramov, Bog Isakov i Bog Jakovljev.
6 I opet mu reče Gospod: Turi sada ruku svoju u nedra svoja.
7 A Bog mu reče: Turi opet ruku svoju u nedra svoja.
10 A Mojsije reče Gospodu: Molim Ti se, Gospode, nisam rečit čovek, niti sam pre bio niti sam otkako si progovorio sa slugom svojim, nego sam sporih usta i sporog jezika.
¿no soy yo Jehová?
13 A Mojsije reče: Molim Te, Gospode, pošlji onog koga treba da pošalješ.
14 I razgnevi se Gospod na Mojsija, i reče mu: Nije li ti brat Aron Levit? Znam da je on rečit; i evo on će te sresti, i kad te vidi obradovaće se u srcu svom.
16 I on će mesto tebe govoriti narodu, i on će biti tebi mesto usta, a ti ćeš biti njemu mesto Boga.
16 Y él hablará por ti al pueblo; y él te será á ti en lugar de boca, y tú serás para él en lugar de Dios.
17 A taj štap uzmi u ruku svoju, njim ćeš činiti čudesa.
I reče Jotor Mojsiju: Idi s mirom.
20 I uze Mojsije ženu svoju i sinove svoje, i posadi ih na magarca, i pođe natrag u zemlju misirsku. I uze Mojsije štap Božji u ruku svoju.
23 I kazah ti: Pusti sina mog da mi posluži. A ti ga ne hte pustiti; evo ja ću ubiti sina tvog, prvenca tvog.
23 Ya te he dicho que dejes ir á mi hijo, para que me sirva, mas no has querido dejarlo ir: he aquí yo voy á matar á tu hijo, tu primogénito.
25 A Sefora uze oštar nož, i obreza sina svog, i okrajak baci k nogama njegovim govoreći: Ti si mi krvav zaručnik.
26 Tada ga ostavi Gospod; a ona radi obrezanja reče: Krvav zaručnik.
27 A Gospod reče Aronu: Iziđi u pustinju na susret Mojsiju. I otide i srete ga na gori Božijoj, i poljubi ga.
29 I otidoše Mojsije i Aron, i skupiše sve starešine sinova Izrailjevih.
30 I Aron kaza sve reči, koje beše rekao Gospod Mojsiju, a Mojsije učini znake pred narodom.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 4:3 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXIII)

And nevertheless Moses feared and fled. What is it that Moses fled from that serpent?

  2. Quotes verse 4:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXVIII)

Thus Moses also first is in fear of the serpent, and not merely in fear, but even with much distress: and then he sees that strange thing come to pass. So these too, having first looked to perish, were then saved, that having confessed the danger, they might learn the greatness of the miracle.

  3. Quotes verse 4:21 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXVIII)

… have a thing which without doubt we can ascribe to them; the dyings of the beasts, the dyings of the first-born, and this especially whence all these things proceeded, namely, the hardening of heart, so that they would not let go the people of God. For when God is said to make this most iniquitous and malignant obstinacy, He maketh …

  4. Quotes verse 4:10 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LVI)

… in behalf of heartless and disobedient men; and by the very persons who were saved by them, they were brought into extreme danger; and each of them wishing to withdraw men from idolatry; and each being unlearned; for the one was of a "slow tongue," and dull of speech, and the other for his part also somewhat of the rudest …
