2 Doista bezumnog ubija gnev, i ludog usmrćuje srdnja.
5 Letinu njegovu jede gladni i ispred trnja kupi je, i lupež ždere blago njihovo.
8 Ali ja bih Boga tražio, i pred Boga bih izneo stvar svoju,
8 Ciertamente yo buscaría á Dios, y depositaría en él mis negocios:
9 Koji čini stvari velike i neispitive, divne, kojima nema broja;
10 Koji spušta dažd na zemlju i šalje vodu na polja;
11 Koji podiže ponižene, i žalosne uzvišuje k spasenju;
12 Koji rasipa misli lukavih da ruke njihove ne svrše ništa;
13 Koji hvata mudre u njihovom lukavstvu, i nameru opakih obara;
13 Que prende á los sabios en la astucia de ellos, y el consejo de los perversos es entontecido;
15 On izbavlja ubogog od mača, od usta njihovih i od ruke silnog.
15 Y libra de la espada al pobre, de la boca de los impíos, y de la mano violenta;
17 Gle, blago čoveku koga Bog kara; i zato ne odbacuj karanje Svemogućeg.
18 Jer On zadaje rane, i zavija; On udara, i ruke Njegove isceljuju.
23 Jer ćeš s kamenjem poljskim biti u veri, i zverje će poljsko biti u miru s tobom.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 5:13 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book IV, Chapter XIV)

    … eye on virgins, according to the prophecy of Isaiah, who said, Behold a virgin shall conceive and bare a Son and shall call His name Emmanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us,' in order that he who taketh the wise in their own craftiness may deceive him who always glorieth in his wisdom, the maiden is given in marriage …
