1 I pristupiše k Njemu fariseji i sadukeji, i kušajući Ga iskahu da im pokaže znak s neba.
2 A On odgovarajući reče im: Uveče govorite: Biće vedro; jer je nebo crveno.
4 Rod zli i kurvarski traži znak, i znak neće mu se dati osim znaka Jone proroka. I ostavivši ih otide.
5 I polazeći učenici Njegovi na one strane zaboraviše uzeti hleba.
6 A Isus reče im: Čuvajte se kvasca farisejskog i sadukejskog.
8 A Isus razumevši reče im: Šta mislite u sebi, maloverni, što hleba niste uzeli?
10 Ni sedam hlebova na četiri hiljade, i koliko kotarica nakupiste?
15 Reče im Isus: A vi šta mislite ko sam ja?
16 A Simon Petar odgovori i reče: Ti si Hristos, Sin Boga Živoga.
17 I odgovarajući Isus reče mu: Blago tebi, Simone sine Jonin!
18 A i ja tebi kažem: ti si Petar, i na ovom kamenu sazidaću crkvu svoju, i vrata paklena neće je nadvladati.
22 I uzevši Ga Petar poče Ga odvraćati govoreći: Bože sačuvaj!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 16:24 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LV)

Then; when? When Peter said, "Be it far from Thee, this shall not be unto Thee;" and was told, "Get thee behind me, Satan." For He was by no means satisfied with the mere rebuke, but, willing also more abundantly to show both the extravagance of what Peter had said, and the benefit of His passion, He saith, "Thy word …

Just, then, as "Paul [was] an apostle, not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father," [so with the rest;] the Son indeed leading them …
