Tyndale Tyndale New Testament (1534)
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Furthermore brethren praye for vs that the worde of god maye have fre passage and be gloryfied as it is with you:
2 and that we maye be delivered from vnresonable and evyll men. For all men have not fayth:
3 but the lorde is faythfull which shall stablysshe you and kepe you from evyll.
4 We have confidence thorow the lorde to you warde that ye both do and will do that which we commaude you.
5 And the lorde gyde youre hertes vnto the love of God and paciece of Christ.
6 We requyre you brethren in the name of oure lorde Iesu Christ that ye with drawe youre selves from every brother that walketh inordinatly and not after the institucion which ye receaved of vs.
7 Ye youre selves knowe how ye ought to folowe vs. For we behaved not oure selves inordinatly amonge you.
8 Nether toke we breed of eny man for nought: but wrought with laboure and travayle nyght and daye because we wolde not be grevous to eny of you:
8 Ni comimos el pan de ninguno de balde; antes, obrando con trabajo y fatiga de noche y de día, por no ser gravosos á ninguno de vosotros;
9 not but that we had auctoritie: but to make oure selves an insample vnto you to folowe vs.
10 For when we were with you this we warned you of that yf ther were eny which wolde not worke that the same shuld not eate.
11 We have hearde saye no doute that ther are some which walke amonge you inordinatly and worke not at all but are besy bodies.
12 Them that are soche we commaunde and exhorte by oure lorde Iesu Christ that they worke with quyetnes and eate their awne breed.
13 Brethren be not wery in well doynge.
14 Yf eny man obey not oure sayinges sende vs worde of him by a letter: and have no companie with him that he maye be ashamed.
15 And count him not as an enemy: but warne him as a brother.
16 The very lorde of peace geve you peace all wayes by all meanes. The lorde be with you all.
17 The salutacion of me Paul with myne awne honde. This is the token in all pistles. So I write.
18 The grace of oure lorde Iesus Christ be with you all Amen. ‘Sent from Athens.’

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 3:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Thessalonians (Homily V)

Neither ought we, having committed everything to the prayers of the Saints, to be idle ourselves, and run into wickedness, and to lay hold of nothing; nor again when working good to despise that succor. For great indeed are the things which prayer for us can effect, but it is when we ourselves also work.

  2. Quotes verse 3:10 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXV)

Since Paul also, having made infinite complaints, and said, "If any will not work, neither let him eat," stopped not at this, but added, "But ye, be not weary in well doing." "Nay, but these things are contradictory.

  3. Quotes verse 3:5 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters XX–XXI)

We have learnt from the Apostle, "the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patient waiting for Christ" for our tribulations.

  4. Quotes verse 3:10 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXV)

But although Paul saith, "If any will not work, neither let him eat," to them he saith it; but to us he saith not this, but, on the contrary, "Be not weary in well doing." Even thus do we at home; when any two are striving with each other, we take each apart, and give them the opposite advice.

  5. Quotes verse 3:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLIII)

if where they are strangers they shine so bright, how great will they become when they shall have won their native land!" Thus they too will be reformed, and the word of godliness "will have free course," not less than in the apostles' times.
