1 A certayne man was sicke named Lazarus of Bethania the toune of Mary and her sister Martha.
1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.
2 It was that Mary which annoynted Iesus with oyntment and wyped his fete with her heere whose brother Lazarus was sicke
2 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
3 and his sisters sent vnto him sayinge. Lorde behold he whom thou lovest is sicke.
3 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”
4 When Iesus hearde that he sayd: this infirmite is not vnto deth but for the laude of God that the sonne of God myght be praysed by the reason of it.
4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”
5 Iesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
5 Y amaba Jesús á Marta, y á su hermana, y á Lázaro.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 After he hearde that he was sicke then aboode he two dayes still in the same place where he was.
6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.
7 Then after that sayd he to his disciples: let us goo into Iewry agayne.
7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”
8 His disciples sayde vnto him. Master the Iewes lately sought meanes to stone the and wilt thou goo thyther agayne?
8 Dícenle los discípulos: Rabbí, ahora procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?
8 The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
9 Iesus answered: are ther not twelve houres in the daye? Yf a man walke in the daye he stombleth not because he seith the lyght of this worlde.
9 Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 But yf a man walke in the nyght he stombleth because ther is no lyght in him.
10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”
11 This sayde he and after that he sayde vnto the: oure frende Lazarus slepeth but I goo to wake him out of slepe.
11 Dicho esto, díceles después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy á despertarle del sueño.
11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”
12 Then sayde his disciples: Lorde yf he slepe he shall do well ynough.
12 Dijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, salvo estará.
12 The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
13 How be it Iesus spake of his deeth: but they thought that he had spoke of the naturall slepe.
13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
14 Then sayde Iesus vnto the playnly Lazarus is deed
14 Entonces, pues, Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro es muerto;
14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.
15 and I am glad for youre sakes that I was not there because ye maye beleve. Neverthelesse let vs go vnto him.
15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”
16 Then sayde Thomas which is called Dydimus vnto the disciples: let vs also goo that we maye dye with him.
16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”
17 Then went Iesus and founde that he had lyne in his grave foure dayes already.
17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
18 Bethanie was nye vnto Ierusalem aboute. xv. furlonges of
18 Y Bethania estaba cerca de Jerusalem, como quince estadios;
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
19 and many of the Iewes were come to Martha and Mary to comforte them over their brother.
19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
20 Martha assone as she hearde that Iesus was comynge went and met him: but Mary sate still in the housse.
20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
21 Then sayde Martha vnto Iesus: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here my brother had not bene deed:
21 Y Marta dijo á Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no fuera muerto;
21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.
22 but neverthelesse I knowe that whatsoever thou axest of God God will geve it the.
22 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”
23 Iesus sayde vnto her: Thy brother shall ryse agayne.
23 Dícele Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano.
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha sayde vnto him: I knowe that he shall ryse agayne in the resurreccion at the last daye.
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Iesus sayde vnto her: I am the resurreccion and the lyfe: He that beleveth on me ye though he were deed yet shall he lyve.
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
26 And whosoever lyveth and belevest on me shall never dye. Beleveth thou this?
26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 She sayde vnto him: ye Lorde I beleve that thou arte Christ the sonne of god which shuld come into the worlde.
27 Dícele: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo.
27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
28 And assone as she had so sayde she went her waye and called Marie her sister secretly sayinge: The master is come and calleth for the
28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”
29 And she assone as she hearde that arose quickly and came vnto him.
29 When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him.
30 Iesus was not yet come into the toune: but was in the place where Martha met him.
30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.
31 The Iewes then which were with her in the housse and comforted her when they sawe Mary that she rose vp hastely and went out folowed her saying: She goeth vnto the grave to wepe there.
31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32 Then when Mary was come where Iesus was and sawe him she fell doune at his fete sayinge vnto him: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here my brother had not bene deed.
32 Mas María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, derribóse á sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no fuera muerto mi hermano.
32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”
33 When Iesus sawe her wepe and the Iewes also wepe which came with her he groned in the sprete and was troubled in him selfe and sayde:
33 Jesús entonces, como la vió llorando, y á los Judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, se conmovió en espíritu, y turbóse,
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,
34 Where have ye layed him? They sayde vnto him: Lorde come and se.
34 Y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Dícenle: Señor, ven, y ve.
34 and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 And Iesus wept.
35 Y lloró Jesús.
35 Jesus wept.
36 Then sayde the Iewes: Beholde howe he loved him.
36 The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”
37 And some of the sayde: coulde not he which openned the eyes of the blynde have made also that this man shuld not have dyed?
37 Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”
38 Iesus agayne groned in him selfe and came to the grave. It was a caue and a stone layde on it.
38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39 And Iesus sayd: take ye awaye the stone. Martha the sister of him that was deed sayd vnto him: Lorde by this tyme he stinketh. For he hath bene deed foure dayes:
39 Dice Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que se había muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya, que es de cuatro días.
39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Iesus sayde vnto her: Sayde I not vnto the that if thou didest beleve thou shuldest se the glory of God.
40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”
41 Then they toke awaye the stone from the place where the deed was layde. And Iesus lyfte vp his eyes and sayde: Father I thanke the because that thou hast hearde me.
41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
42 I wot that thou hearest me all wayes: but because of the people that stonde by I sayde it that they maye beleve that thou hast sent me.
42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”
43 And when he thus had spoken he cryed with a loud voyce. Lazarus come forthe.
43 Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó á gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera.
43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 And he that was deed came forth bounde hand and fote with grave bondes and his face was bounde with a napkin. Iesus sayde vnto the: loowse him and let him goo.
44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”
45 Then many of the Iewes which came to Mary and had sene the thinges which Iesus dyd beleved on him.
45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him.
46 But some of them went their wayes to the Pharises and tolde them what Iesus had done.
46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
47 Then gadered the hye prestes and the Pharises a counsell and sayde: what do we? This man doeth many miracles.
47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
48 Yf we let him scape thus all men will beleve on him and the Romaynes shall come and take awaye oure countre and the people.
48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
49 And one of them named Cayphas which was the hieprest that same yeare sayde vnto them: Ye perceave nothinge at all
49 Y Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo pontífice de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;
49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
50 nor yet consider that it is expedient for vs that one man dye for the people and not that all the people perisshe.
50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
51 This spake he not of him selfe but beinge hye preste that same yeare he prophesied that Iesus shulde dye for the people
51 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
52 and not for the people only but that he shuld gader to geder in one the chyldren of God which were scattered abroode.
52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53 From that daye forth they held a counsell to geder for to put him to deeth.
53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.
54 Iesus therfore walked no more opely amonge the Iewes: but wet his waye thence vnto a countre nye to a wildernes into a cite called Ephraim and there hauted with his disciples.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
55 And the Iewes ester was nye at hand and many went out of the countre vp to Ierusalem before the ester to purify them selves.
55 Y la Pascua de los Judíos estaba cerca: y muchos subieron de aquella tierra á Jerusalem antes de la Pascua, para purificarse;
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
56 Then sought they for Iesus and spake bitwene the selves as they stode in the temple: What thinke ye seynge he cometh not to the feast.
56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”
57 The hye prestes and Pharises had geven a commaundement that yf eny man knew where he were he shuld shewe it that they myght take him.
57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  2. Commentary 11:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LXII)

  3. Quotes verse 11:54 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter XXI)

Then, when He had raised Lazarus from the dead, and plots were formed against Him by the Pharisees, He withdrew to a city called Ephraim; and from that place, as it is written "He came to Bethany six days before the passover," and going up from Bethany to Jerusalem, He there ate the passover, and suffered on the day following.

  4. Quotes verse 11:15 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIV, Chapter 9)

When, therefore, we read in the Gospel that the hard-heartedness of the Jews moved Him to sorrowful indignation, that He said, "I am glad for your sakes, to the intent ye may believe," that when about to raise Lazarus He even shed tears, that He earnestly desired to eat the passover with His disciples, that as His passion drew near …

  5. Quotes verse 11:42 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XVI)

… Lazarus, added also a prayer; and then, lest this should make Him appear less than Him that begat Him, He, to correct this suspicion, added, "I said these things, because of the people which standeth by, that they may believe that thou hast sent me." And neither doth He work all things as one who acted by His own power, …
