1 When the Sabbath day was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices that they might come and anoint Jesus' body.
1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint him.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb when the sun came up.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?”
3 They were saying among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”
4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, for it was very large.
4 for it was very big. Looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back.
5 They entered the tomb and saw a young man dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
5 Entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed.
6 He said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. Look at the place where they had laid him.
6 He said to them, “Don’t be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him!
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'”
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He goes before you into Galilee. There you will see him, as he said to you.’”
8◆ They went out and ran from the tomb; they were trembling and amazed. They said nothing to anyone because they were so afraid.
8 They went out, and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had come on them. They said nothing to anyone; for they were afraid.
9◆ Early on the first day of the week, after he arose, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.
9 Now when he had risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.
10◆ She went and told those who were with him, while they were mourning and weeping.
10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
11◆ They heard that he was alive and that he had been seen by her, but they did not believe.
11 When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they disbelieved.
12◆ After these things he appeared in a different form to two of them, as they were walking out into the country.
12 After these things he was revealed in another form to two of them as they walked, on their way into the country.
13◆ They went and told the rest of the disciples, but they did not believe them.
13 They went away and told it to the rest. They didn’t believe them, either.
14◆ Jesus later appeared to the eleven as they were reclining at the table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw him after he rose from the dead.
14 Afterward he was revealed to the eleven themselves as they sat at the table; and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they didn’t believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
15◆ He said to them, “Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to the entire creation.
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation.
16◆ He who believes and is baptized will be saved, and he who does not believe will be condemned.
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who disbelieves will be condemned.
17◆ These signs will go with those who believe: In my name they will cast out demons. They will speak in new languages.
17 Y estas señales seguirán á los que creyeren: En mi nombre echarán fuera demonios; hablarán nuevas lenguas;
17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new languages;
18◆ They will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.”
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will in no way hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
19◆ After the Lord had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
19 So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
20◆ The disciples left and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word by the signs that went with them.
20 They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 16:19 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter X)

Also, towards the conclusion of his Gospel, Mark says: "So then, after the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God;" confirming what had been spoken by the prophet: "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit Thou on My right hand, until I make Thy foes Thy footstool." …

  2. Quotes verse 16:16 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXI)

So again when we hear, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;" we do not of course understand it of one who believes in such a way "as the devils believe and tremble;" nor of those who receive baptism in such sort as Simon Magus, who though he could be baptized, could not be saved.

  5. Quotes verse 16:15 Augustine of Hippo, Homilies on the First Epistle of John (Homily IV)

Ye heard while the Gospel was read, "Go, preach the Gospel to the whole creation which is under heaven." Consequently, the disciples were sent "every where:" with signs and wonders to attest that what they spake, they had seen.
