PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
6 Se acercó a Simón Pedro, quien le preguntó: “Señor, ¿vas a lavar mis pies?”
6 ἔρχεται οὖν πρὸς Σίμωνα Πέτρον, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ἐκεῖνος· Κύριε, σύ μου νίπτεις τοὺς πόδας;
8 “¡No!” protestó Pedro. “¡Nunca lavarás mis pies!” Jesús respondió, “Si no te lavo, no tendrás parte conmigo”,
9 “¡Entonces, Señor, no laves solamente mis pies, sino también mis manos y mi cabeza!” exclamó Simón Pedro.
12 Ὅτε οὖν ἔνιψε τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ ἔλαβε τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ, ἀναπεσὼν πάλιν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· γινώσκετε τί πεποίηκα ὑμῖν;
25 ἐπιπεσὼν δὲ ἐκεῖνος ἐπὶ τὸ στῆθος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ λέγει αὐτῷ· Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν;
36 Simón Pedro le preguntó: “¿Adónde vas, Señor?” Jesús respondió: “Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden seguirme. Ustedes me seguirán después”.
37 “Señor, ¿por qué no puedo seguirte ahora?” preguntó Pedro. “Entregaré mi vida por ti”.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 13:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XIII — 1-5)

The Lord's Supper, as set forth in John, must, with His assistance, be unfolded in a becoming number of Lectures, and explained with all the ability He is pleased to grant us.

  2. Commentary 13:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LXX)

"Be ye imitators of me," said Paul, "as I also am of Christ." ( 1 Cor. xi. 1.) For on this account He took also flesh of our substance, that by means of it He might teach us virtue.

  3. Quotes verse 13:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter XXI)

Now in the last days, when the fulness of the time of liberty had arrived, the Word Himself did by Himself "wash away the filth of the daughters of Zion," when He washed the disciples' feet with His own hands. For this is the end of the human race inheriting God; that as in the beginning, by means of our …

  4. Quotes verse 13:2 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XVII)

"The devil," saith the Scripture, "entered into the heart of Judas, that he should betray the Lord." One may say then, what have I done?

  5. Quotes verse 13:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XII)

For so he too would have forbidden Him to wash his feet, but when he had heard, "What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter," and "thou hast no part with me," he speedily withdrew from his determination, and went over to the contrary.
