VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Estote ergo imitatores Dei, sicut filii carissimi,
3 Pero fornicación y toda inmundicia, ó avaricia, ni aun se nombre entre vosotros, como conviene á santos;
6 Nemo vos seducat inanibus verbis: propter hæc enim venit ira Dei in filios diffidentiæ.
7 Nolite ergo effici participes eorum.
7 No seáis pues aparceros con ellos;
15 Videte itaque, fratres, quomodo caute ambuletis: non quasi insipientes,
15 Mirad, pues, cómo andéis avisadamente; no como necios, mas como sabios;
18 Y no os embriaguéis de vino, en lo cual hay disolución; mas sed llenos de Espíritu;
19 loquentes vobismetipsis in psalmis, et hymnis, et canticis spiritualibus, cantantes et psallentes in cordibus vestris Domino,
19 Hablando entre vosotros con salmos, y con himnos, y canciones espirituales, cantando y alabando al Señor en vuestros corazones;
21 subjecti invicem in timore Christi.
22 Mulieres viris suis subditæ sint, sicut Domino:
23 quoniam vir caput est mulieris, sicut Christus caput est Ecclesiæ: ipse, salvator corporis ejus.
26 ut illam sanctificaret, mundans lavacro aquæ in verbo vitæ,
29 Porque ninguno aborreció jamás á su propia carne, antes la sustenta y regala, como también Cristo á la iglesia;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 5:5 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Ephesians (Homily XVIII)

    There were, it is likely, in the time of our forefathers also, some who "weakened the hands of the people" (Jer. xxxviii. 4.), and brought into practice that which is mentioned by Ezekiel,--or rather who did the works of the false prophets, who "profaned God among His people for handfuls of barley" (Ezek. xiii.

    … also that Paul has referred to the conjunctions within the Pleroma, showing them forth by means of one; for, when writing of the conjugal union in this life, he expressed himself thus: "This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the Church."

  3. Quotes verse 5:14 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book VIII, Chapters III–V)

    Nor had I aught to answer Thee calling to me, "Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light." And to Thee showing me on every side, that what Thou saidst was true, I, convicted by the truth, had nothing at all to reply, but the drawling and drowsy words: "Presently, lo, presently;" "Leave …

  4. Quotes verse 5:4 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily VI)

    … this cause he also built theatres in the cities, and having trained those buffoons, by their pernicious influence he causes that kind of pestilence to light upon the whole city, persuading men to follow those things which Paul bade us flee, "foolish talking and jesting." And what is yet more grievous than these things is the subject of the laughter.
