WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 In finem. Psalmus David.
·
20:1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. May Yahweh answer you in the day of trouble. May the name of the God of Jacob set you up on high,
20:2 send you help from the sanctuary, grant you support from Zion,
20:3 remember all your offerings, and accept your burned sacrifice. Selah.
5 Tribuat tibi secundum cor tuum, et omne consilium tuum confirmet.
20:4 May he grant you your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your counsel.
6 Lætabimur in salutari tuo; et in nomine Dei nostri magnificabimur.
20:5 We will triumph in your salvation. In the name of our God, we will set up our banners. May Yahweh grant all your requests.
7 Impleat Dominus omnes petitiones tuas; nunc cognovi quoniam salvum fecit Dominus christum suum. Exaudiet illum de cælo sancto suo, in potentatibus salus dexteræ ejus.
20:6 Now I know that Yahweh saves his anointed. He will answer him from his holy heaven, with the saving strength of his right hand.
8 Hi in curribus, et hi in equis; nos autem in nomine Domini Dei nostri invocabimus.
20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust in the name of Yahweh our God.
20:8 They are bowed down and fallen, but we rise up, and stand upright.
20:9 Save, Yahweh! Let the King answer us when we call!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 20.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XIX)

It is a well-known title; nor does the Lord Jesus Christ say what follows, but it is said of Him. 2. "The heavens tell out the glory of God" (ver. 1).
