1 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there who had a withered hand.
1 He entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there whose hand was withered.
2 And they watched him, [to see] whether he would heal him on the sabbath; that they might accuse him.
2 They watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, that they might accuse him.
3 And he saith to the man who had the withered hand, Stand forth.
3 He said to the man whose hand was withered, “Stand up.”
4 And he saith to them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? but they held their peace.
4 He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do harm? To save a life or to kill?” But they were silent.
5 And when he had looked around on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched [it] out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
5 When he had looked around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardening of their hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored as healthy as the other.
6 And the Pharisees went forth, and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
6 The Pharisees went out, and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
7 But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judea.
7 Jesus withdrew to the sea with his disciples; and a great multitude followed him from Galilee, from Judea,
8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and [from] beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came to him.
8 from Jerusalem, from Idumaea, beyond the Jordan, and those from around Tyre and Sidon. A great multitude, hearing what great things he did, came to him.
9 And he spoke to his disciples, that a small boat should wait on him, because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.
9 He spoke to his disciples that a little boat should stay near him because of the crowd, so that they wouldn’t press on him.
10 For he had healed many; so that they pressed upon him to touch him, as many as had diseases.
10 For he had healed many, so that as many as had diseases pressed on him that they might touch him.
11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
11 The unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, fell down before him and cried, “You are the Son of God!”
12 And he strictly charged them, that they should not make him known.
12 He sternly warned them that they should not make him known.
13 And he goeth up upon a mountain, and calleth [to him] whom he would: and they came to him.
13 He went up into the mountain and called to himself those whom he wanted, and they went to him.
14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
14 He appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach
15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out demons.
15 and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons:
16 And Simon he surnamed Peter.
16 Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter);
17 And James the [son] of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, (and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, Sons of thunder,)
17 James the son of Zebedee; and John, the brother of James, (whom he called Boanerges, which means, Sons of Thunder);
18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the [son] of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Canaanite,
18 Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot;
19 And Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him: and they went into a house.
19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Then he came into a house.
20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
20 The multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
21 And when his friends heard [of it] , they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
21 When his friends heard it, they went out to seize him; for they said, “He is insane.”
22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem, said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the demons he casteth out demons.
22 The scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul,” and, “By the prince of the demons he casts out the demons.”
23 And he called them [to him] , and said to them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
23 He summoned them and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?
23 καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς ἐν παραβολαῖς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· πῶς δύναται σατανᾶς σατανᾶν ἐκβάλλειν;
24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
26 If Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he can’t stand, but has an end.
27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and seize his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will plunder his house.
27 But no one can enter into the house of the strong man to plunder unless he first binds the strong man; then he will plunder his house.
28 Verily I say to you, All sins shall be forgiven to the sons of men, and any blasphemies with which they shall blaspheme:
28 “Most certainly I tell you, all sins of the descendants of man will be forgiven, including their blasphemies with which they may blaspheme;
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit never hath forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
29 but whoever may blaspheme against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation.”
30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.
30 —because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and standing without, they sent to him, calling him.
31 His mother and his brothers came, and standing outside, they sent to him, calling him.
32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said to him, Behold, thy mother, and thy brethren without seek for thee.
32 A multitude was sitting around him, and they told him, “Behold, your mother, your brothers, and your sisters are outside looking for you.”
33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
33 He answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?”
33 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων· τίς ἐστιν ἡ μήτηρ μου ἢ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου;
34 And he looked around on them who sat about him, and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren!
34 Looking around at those who sat around him, he said, “Behold, my mother and my brothers!
35 For whoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
35 For whoever does the will of God is my brother, my sister, and mother.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 3:27 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Chapter XIX)

    For when Satan is bound, man is set free; since "none can enter a strong man's house and spoil his goods, unless he first bind the strong man himself." The Lord therefore exposes him as speaking contrary to the word of that God who made all things, and subdues him by means of the commandment.

  2. Quotes verse 3:27 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 6–7)

    The Lord Jesus Christ Himself says, "No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man" --meaning by the strong man the devil, because he had power to take captive the human race; and meaning by his goods which he was to take, those who had been held by the …

  3. Quotes verse 3:24 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily I)

    Whereas, if they were in discord, neither could this have been pointed out, and the doctrine itself had long since been brought to nought: "for every kingdom," saith He, "divided against itself shall not stand." But now even in this shines forth the might of the Spirit, namely, in that it prevailed on these men, engaged as they were in …

  5. Quotes verse 3:28 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXI)

    But forasmuch as it is first said, "All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men;" which in another Evangelist is also thus expressed, "All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewithsoever they shall blaspheme;" without doubt, that blasphemy also which is spoken against the Father is included in that general expression; and …
