1 Lord, thou hast proved me, and known me:
139:1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me.
2 Thou hast know my sitting down, and my rising up.
139:2 You know my sitting down and my rising up. You perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 Thou hast understood my thoughts afar off: my path and my line thou hast searched out.
139:3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 And thou hast foreseen all my ways: for there is no speech in my tongue.
139:4 For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, Yahweh, you know it altogether.
5 Behold, O Lord, thou hast known all things, the last and those of old: thou hast formed me, and hast laid thy hand upon me.
139:5 You hem me in behind and before. You laid your hand on me.
6 Thy knowledge is become wonderful to me: it is high, and I cannot reach to it.
139:6 This knowledge is beyond me. It’s lofty. I can’t attain it.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy face?
139:7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: if I descend into hell, thou art present.
139:8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there!
9 If I take my wings early in the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea:
139:9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 Even there also shall thy hand lead me: and thy right hand shall hold me.
139:10 even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.
11 And I said: Perhaps darkness shall cover me: and night shall be my light in my pleasures.
139:11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me. The light around me will be night,”
12 But darkness shall not be dark to thee, and night shall be light as day: the darkness thereof, and the light thereof are alike to thee.
139:12 even the darkness doesn’t hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you.
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast protected me from my mother’s womb.
139:13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: wonderful are thy works, and my soul knoweth right well.
139:14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.
15 My bone is not hidden from thee, which thou hast made in secret: and my substance in the lower parts of the earth.
139:15 My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Thy eyes did see my imperfect being, and in thy book all shall be written: days shall be formed, and no one in them.
139:16 Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.
17 But to me thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honourable: their principality is exceedingly strengthened.
139:17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is their sum!
18 I will number them, and they shall be multiplied above the sand: I rose up and am still with thee.
139:18 If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand. When I wake up, I am still with you.
19 If thou wilt kill the wicked, O God: ye men of blood, depart from me:
139:19 If only you, God, would kill the wicked. Get away from me, you bloodthirsty men!
20 Because you say in thought: They shall receive thy cities in vain.
139:20 For they speak against you wickedly. Your enemies take your name in vain.
21 Have I not hated them, O Lord, that hated thee: and pine away because of thy enemies?
139:21 Yahweh, don’t I hate those who hate you? Am I not grieved with those who rise up against you?
22 I have hated them with a perfect hatred: and they are become enemies to me.
139:22 I hate them with perfect hatred. They have become my enemies.
23 Prove me, O God, and know my heart: examine me, and know my paths.
139:23 Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts.
24 And see if there be in me the way of iniquity: and lead me in the eternal way.
139:24 See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

  1. Comentario Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXVIII)

The title of this Psalm is brief and simple, and need not detain us; since we know whose resemblance David wore, and since in him we recognise ourselves also, for we too are members of that Body. The whole title is, "To David himself." Let us see then, what is to David himself.

  2. Cita 139:7–10 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XXVI–XXXIII)

If I ascend into heaven, Thou art there; if I go away even to the uttermost parts of the earth, there is Thy right hand; if I make my bed in the abyss, there is Thy Spirit." Whither, then, shall any one go, or where shall he escape from Him who comprehends all things?

  3. Cita 139:7 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book V)

For whither fled they when they fled from Thy presence? Or where dost Thou not find them?

  4. Cita 139:8 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VIII)

… have dared to circumscribe God's providence by the clouds and the heaven, and to alienate from God the things on earth; having forgotten the Psalm which says, If I go up into heaven, Thou art there, if I go down into hell, Thou art present.

  5. Cita 139:14 Basil of Caesarea, Hexaemeron (Homily IX)

Yet the beholding of heaven and earth does not make us know God better than the attentive study of our being does; I am, says the Prophet, fearfully and wonderfully made; that is to say, in observing myself I have known Thy infinite wisdom.
