2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: 2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have stayed with me now three days and have nothing to eat.
3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. 3 If I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come a long way.”
4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these [men] with bread here in the wilderness? 4 His disciples answered him, “From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?”
4 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπ᾽ ἐρημίας;
5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. 5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.”
6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before [them]; and they did set [them] before the people. 6 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves. Having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude.
7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before [them]. 7 They also had a few small fish. Having blessed them, he said to serve these also.
8 So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken [meat] that was left seven baskets. 8 They ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets of broken pieces that were left over.
9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away. 9 Those who had eaten were about four thousand. Then he sent them away.
10 ¶ And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. 10 Immediately he entered into the boat with his disciples and came into the region of Dalmanutha.
11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. 11 The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven and testing him.
12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. 12 He sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Most certainly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side. 13 He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.
14 ¶ Now [the disciples] had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. 14 They forgot to take bread; and they didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them.
15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and [of] the leaven of Herod. 15 He warned them, saying, “Take heed: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, [It is] because we have no bread. 16 They reasoned with one another, saying, “It’s because we have no bread.”
17 And when Jesus knew [it], he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? 17 Jesus, perceiving it, said to them, “Why do you reason that it’s because you have no bread? Don’t you perceive yet or understand? Is your heart still hardened?
17 καὶ γνοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς· τί διαλογίζεσθε ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε; οὔπω νοεῖτε οὐδὲ συνίετε; ἔτι πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν;
18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? 18 Having eyes, don’t you see? Having ears, don’t you hear? Don’t you remember?
18 ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε, καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε; καὶ οὐ μνημονεύετε;
19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. 19 When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Twelve.”
20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. 20 “When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Seven.”
21 And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand? 21 He asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”
21 καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· οὔπω συνίετε;
22 ¶ And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. 22 He came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him.
23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. 23 He took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village. When he had spat on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.
24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. 24 He looked up, and said, “I see men, but I see them like walking trees.”
25 After that he put [his] hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. 25 Then again he laid his hands on his eyes. He looked intently, and was restored, and saw everyone clearly.
26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell [it] to any in the town. 26 He sent him away to his house, saying, “Don’t enter into the village, nor tell anyone in the village.”
27 ¶ And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Cæsarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? 27 Jesus went out, with his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”
27 Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰς κώμας Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου· καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐπηρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων αὐτοῖς· τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι;
28 And they answered, John the Baptist: but some [say], Elias; and others, One of the prophets. 28 They told him, “John the Baptizer, and others say Elijah, but others, one of the prophets.”
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ. 29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”
30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. 30 He commanded them that they should tell no one about him.
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and [of] the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 32 He spoke to them openly. Peter took him and began to rebuke him.
33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. 33 But he, turning around and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men.”
34 ¶ And when he had called the people [unto him] with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 34 He called the multitude to himself with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
36 τί γὰρ ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν κερδήσῃ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον, καὶ ζημιωθῇ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ;
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 37 For what will a man give in exchange for his life?
37 ἢ τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ;
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. 38 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
