1 Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causes a father to rejoice, || And a foolish son [is] an affliction to his mother.
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
2 Treasures of wickedness do not profit, || And righteousness delivers from death.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivers from death.
3 YHWH does not cause the soul of the righteous to hunger, || And He thrusts away the desire of the wicked.
3 Yahweh will not allow the soul of the righteous to go hungry, but he thrusts away the desire of the wicked.
4 Poor [is] he who is working [with] a slothful hand, || And the hand of the diligent makes rich.
4 He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand, but the hand of the diligent brings wealth.
5 Whoever is gathering in summer [is] a wise son, || Whoever is sleeping in harvest [is] a son causing shame.
5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during the harvest is a son who causes shame.
6 Blessings [are] for the head of the righteous, || And the mouth of the wicked covers violence.
6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
7 The remembrance of the righteous [is] for a blessing, || And the name of the wicked rots.
7 The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.
8 The wise in heart accepts commands, || And a talkative fool kicks.
8 The wise in heart accept commandments, but a chattering fool will fall.
9 Whoever is walking in integrity walks confidently, || And whoever is perverting his ways is known.
9 He who walks blamelessly walks surely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out.
10 Whoever is winking the eye gives grief, || And a talkative fool kicks.
10 One who winks with the eye causes sorrow, but a chattering fool will fall.
11 A fountain of life [is] the mouth of the righteous, || And the mouth of the wicked covers violence.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
12 Hatred awakens contentions, || And love covers over all transgressions.
12 Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all wrongs.
13 Wisdom is found in the lips of the intelligent, || And a rod [is] for the back of him who is lacking understanding.
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has discernment, but a rod is for the back of him who is void of understanding.
14 The wise lay up knowledge, and the mouth of a fool [is] near ruin.
14 Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near ruin.
15 The wealth of the rich [is] his strong city, || The ruin of the poor [is] their poverty.
15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city. The destruction of the poor is their poverty.
16 The wage of the righteous [is] for life, || The increase of the wicked for sin.
16 The labor of the righteous leads to life. The increase of the wicked leads to sin.
17 A traveler to life [is] he who is keeping instruction, || And whoever is forsaking rebuke is erring.
17 He is in the way of life who heeds correction, but he who forsakes reproof leads others astray.
18 Whoever is covering hatred with lying lips, || And whoever is bringing out an evil report is a fool.
18 He who hides hatred has lying lips. He who utters a slander is a fool.
19 In the abundance of words transgression does not cease, || And whoever is restraining his lips [is] wise.
19 In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely.
20 The tongue of the righteous [is] chosen silver, || The heart of the wicked—as a little thing.
20 The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver. The heart of the wicked is of little worth.
21 The lips of the righteous delight many, || And fools die for lack of heart.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many, but the foolish die for lack of understanding.
22 The blessing of YHWH—it makes rich, || And He adds no grief with it.
22 Yahweh’s blessing brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.
23 To execute inventions [is] as play to a fool, || And wisdom to a man of understanding.
23 It is a fool’s pleasure to do wickedness, but wisdom is a man of understanding’s pleasure.
24 The feared thing of the wicked meets him, || And the desire of the righteous is given.
24 What the wicked fear will overtake them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25 As the passing by of a windstorm, || So the wicked is not, || And the righteous is a perpetual foundation.
25 When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous stand firm forever.
26 As vinegar to the teeth, || And as smoke to the eyes, || So [is] the slothful to those sending him.
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.
27 The fear of YHWH adds days, || And the years of the wicked are shortened.
27 The fear of Yahweh prolongs days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
28 The hope of the righteous [is] joyful, || And the expectation of the wicked perishes.
28 The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hope of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of YHWH [is] strength to the perfect, || And ruin to workers of iniquity.
29 The way of Yahweh is a stronghold to the upright, but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.
30 The righteous is not moved for all time, || And the wicked do not inhabit the earth.
30 The righteous will never be removed, but the wicked will not dwell in the land.
31 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, || And the tongue of contrariness is cut out.
31 The mouth of the righteous produces wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
32 The lips of the righteous know a pleasing thing, || And the mouth of the wicked perverseness!
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked is perverse.

  1. Cita 10:10 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXII)

But since this is so, what is that which Solomon says, and which we heard first to-day out of another lesson, "He that winketh with the eyes deceitfully, heapeth sorrow upon men; but he that reproveth openly, maketh peace"? If then "he that reproveth openly, maketh peace;" how "rebuke him between him and thee alone"?

  2. Cita 10:26 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (The Second Part)

It is not I that say: hear the Scripture: "As a sour grape is vexation to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so is unrighteousness to them that use it." For he that shall have eaten unrighteousness, that is, he that shall have had unrighteousness wilfully, shall not be able to eat righteousness.
