1 TO THE OVERSEER. A PSALM OF DAVID. O the blessedness of him || Who is acting wisely to the poor, || In a day of evil YHWH delivers him. 2 YHWH preserves him and revives him, || He is blessed in the land, || And You do not give him into the will of his enemies. 3 YHWH supports [him] on a bed of sickness, || You have turned his bed in his weakness. 4 I said, “O YHWH, favor me, || Heal my soul, for I sinned against You,” 5 My enemies say evil of me: When he dies—his name has perished! 6 And if he came to see—he speaks vanity, || His heart gathers iniquity to itself, || He goes out—at the street he speaks. 7 All hating me whisper together against me, || Against me they devise evil to me: 8 A worthless thing is poured out on him, || And because he lay down he does not rise again. 9 Even my ally, in whom I trusted, || One eating my bread, || Made the heel great against me, 10 And You, YHWH, favor me, || And cause me to rise, || And I give repayment to them. 11 By this I have known, || That You have delighted in me, || Because my enemy does not shout over me. 12 As for me, in my integrity, || You have taken hold on me, || And cause me to stand before You for all time. 13 Blessed [is] YHWH, God of Israel, || From age to age. Amen and Amen.

  1. Cita 41:4 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IV)

For good it is to confess unto Thee, and to say, "Be merciful unto me, heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee;" and not to abuse Thy goodness for a license to sin, but to remember the words of the Lord, "Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." All of …

  2. Cita 41:9 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XIII)

He who did eat of His bread, was lifting up his heel against Him; his hands were but lately receiving the blessed gifts, and presently for the wages of betrayal he was plotting His death.

  3. Cita 41:4 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IV, Chapters VIII–XII)

… departed thither, whence He never departed, because "the world was made by Him." And in this world He was, and into this world He came to save sinners, unto whom my soul doth confess, that He may heal it, for it hath sinned against Him. O ye sons of men, how long so slow of heart?

  4. Cita 41:4 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book V, Chapters IX–X)

… I know not what other nature sinned in us." And it gratified my pride to be free from blame and, after I had committed any fault, not to acknowledge that I had done any,--"that Thou mightest heal my soul because it had sinned against Thee;" but I loved to excuse it, and to accuse something else (I wot not what) …
