1 TO THE OVERSEER. FOR JEDUTHUN. A PSALM OF ASAPH. My voice [is] to God, and I cry, || My voice [is] to God, || And He has given ear to me.
1 Al Músico principal: para Jeduthún: Salmo de Asaph. CON mi voz clamé á Dios, á Dios clamé, y él me escuchará.
1 For the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm by Asaph. My cry goes to God! Indeed, I cry to God for help, and for him to listen to me.
2 I sought the Lord in a day of my distress, || My hand has been spread out by night, || And it does not cease, || My soul has refused to be comforted.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and didn’t get tired. My soul refused to be comforted.
3 I remember God, and make a noise, || I meditate, and my spirit is feeble. Selah.
(Selah.)
3 I remember God, and I groan. I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah.
4 You have taken hold of the watches of my eyes, || I have been moved, and I do not speak.
4 You hold my eyelids open. I am so troubled that I can’t speak.
5 I have reckoned the days of old, || The years of the ages.
5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6 I remember my music in the night, || I meditate with my heart, and my spirit searches diligently:
6 I remember my song in the night. I consider in my own heart; my spirit diligently inquires:
7 Does the Lord cast off for all ages? Does He add to be pleased no longer?
7 “Will the Lord reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more?
8 Has His kindness ceased forever? The saying failed from generation to generation?
8 Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations?
9 Has God forgotten [His] favors? Has He shut up His mercies in anger? Selah.
9 ¿Ha olvidado Dios el tener misericordia? ¿ha encerrado con ira sus piedades? (Selah.)
9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?” Selah.
10 And I say: “My weakness is, || The changes of the right hand of the Most High.”
10 Then I thought, “I will appeal to this: the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
11 I mention the doings of YAH, || For I remember Your wonders of old,
11 I will remember Yah’s deeds; for I will remember your wonders of old.
12 And I have meditated on all Your working, || And I talk concerning Your doings.
12 I will also meditate on all your work, and consider your doings.
13 O God, Your way [is] in holiness, || Who [is] a great god like God?
13 Your way, God, is in the sanctuary. What god is great like God?
14 You [are] the God doing wonders. You have made Your strength known among the peoples,
14 You are the God who does wonders. You have made your strength known among the peoples.
15 You have redeemed Your people with strength, || The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
(Selah.)
15 You have redeemed your people with your arm, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 The waters have seen You, O God, || The waters have seen You, || They are afraid—also depths are troubled.
16 The waters saw you, God. The waters saw you, and they writhed. The depths also convulsed.
17 Thick clouds have poured out waters, || The skies have given forth a noise, || Also—Your arrows go up and down.
17 The clouds poured out water. The skies resounded with thunder. Your arrows also flashed around.
18 The voice of Your thunder [is] in the spheres, || Lightnings have lightened the world, || The earth has trembled, indeed, it shakes.
18 The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind. The lightnings lit up the world. The earth trembled and shook.
19 Your way [is] in the sea, || And Your paths in many waters, || And Your tracks have not been known.
19 Your way was through the sea, your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known.
20 You have led Your people as a flock, || By the hand of Moses and Aaron!
20 You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

  1. Comentario Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXVI)

The Jews are wont to glory in this Psalm which we have sung, saying, "Known in Judæa is God, in Israel great is the name of Him:" and to revile the Gentiles to whom God is not known, and to say that to themselves alone God is known; seeing that the Prophet saith, "Known in Judæa is God." In other …

  2. Cita 77:9 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 17–19)

The verse runs: "Shall God forget to be gracious? Shall He in anger shut up His tender mercies?" His anger, they say, would condemn all that are unworthy of everlasting happiness to endless punishment.

  3. Cita 77:20 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapter XIX)

… sent me," and "the Spirit came down from the Lord and guided them." And pray do not again understand by this guidance some humble service, for the Word witnesses that it was the work of God;--"Thou leddest thy people," it is said "like a flock," and "Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock," and "He led them on safely, so …

  4. Cita 77:9 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 22–24)

shall He shut up in His anger His tender mercies" as if the sentence of God were true of good men, false of bad men, or true of good men and wicked angels, but false of bad men.

  5. Cita 77:10 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 22–24)

shall He shut up in His anger His tender mercies?" and then immediately subjoins, "And I said, Now I begin: this is the change wrought by the right hand of the Most High," he manifestly explained what he meant by the words, "Shall he shut up in His anger His tender mercies?"
