1 A PRAYER OF MOSES, THE MAN OF GOD. Lord, You have been a habitation, || To us—in generation and generation,
1 A Prayer by Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.
2 Before mountains were brought forth, || And You form the earth and the world, || Even from age to age You [are] God.
2 Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
3 You turn man to a bruised thing, || And say, Return, you sons of men.
3 You turn man to destruction, saying, “Return, you children of men.”
4 For one thousand years in Your eyes [are] as yesterday, || For it passes on, indeed, [as] a watch by night.
4 For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.
5 You have inundated them, they are asleep, || In the morning he changes as grass.
5 You sweep them away as they sleep. In the morning they sprout like new grass.
6 In the morning it flourishes, and has changed, || At evening it is cut down, and has withered.
6 In the morning it sprouts and springs up. By evening, it is withered and dry.
7 For we were consumed in Your anger, || And we have been troubled in Your fury.
7 For we are consumed in your anger. We are troubled in your wrath.
8 You have set our iniquities before You, || Our hidden things at the light of Your face,
8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 For all our days pined away in Your wrath, || We consumed our years as a meditation.
9 For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.
10 The days of our years, in them [are] seventy years, || And if, by reason of might, eighty years, || Yet their enlargement [is] labor and vanity, || For it has been cut off quickly, and we fly away.
10 The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger? And according to Your fear—Your wrath?
11 Who knows the power of your anger, your wrath according to the fear that is due to you?
12 Let [us] know to number our days correctly, || And we bring the heart to wisdom.
12 So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13 Turn back, O YHWH, until when? And regret concerning Your servants.
13 Relent, Yahweh! How long? Have compassion on your servants!
14 Satisfy us at morning [with] Your kindness, || And we sing and rejoice all our days.
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Cause us to rejoice according to the days || Wherein You have afflicted us, || The years we have seen evil.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let Your work appear to Your servants, || And Your honor on their sons.
16 Let your work appear to your servants, your glory to their children.
17 And let the pleasantness of our God YHWH be on us, || And establish on us the work of our hands, || Indeed, establish the work of our hands!
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.

  1. Comentario Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXIX)

Understand, beloved, this Psalm, which I am about to explain, by the grace of God, of our hope in the Lord Jesus Christ, and be of good cheer, because He who promised, will fulfil all, as He has fulfilled much: for it is not our own merit, but His mercy, that gives us confidence in Him.

  2. Cita 90:10 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapters 13–14)

… Abraham lived 175 of, and after him his son Isaac 180, and his son Jacob nearly 150, and some time after, Moses 120, and men now seventy or eighty, or not much longer, of which years it is said, "their strength is labor and sorrow." But that discrepancy of numbers which is found to exist between our own and the …

  3. Cita 90:4 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapters XIII–XIII)

Or if even this is so (for time flies, and a thousand years are in God's sight as one day, or as a watch in the night,) yet we cannot believe that He intended any such meaning on this occasion, especially as He went on to say, "Ye shall seek me, and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I …
