VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Alleluja.
105:1 Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Make his doings known among the peoples.
105:2 Sing to him, sing praises to him! Tell of all his marvelous works.
3 Laudamini in nomine sancto ejus; lætetur cor quærentium Dominum.
105:3 Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.
4 Quærite Dominum, et confirmamini; quærite faciem ejus semper.
105:4 Seek Yahweh and his strength. Seek his face forever more.
5 Mementote mirabilium ejus quæ fecit; prodigia ejus, et judicia oris ejus:
105:5 Remember his marvelous works that he has done: his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,
6 semen Abraham servi ejus; filii Jacob electi ejus.
105:6 you offspring of Abraham, his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.
7 Ipse Dominus Deus noster; in universa terra judicia ejus.
105:7 He is Yahweh, our God. His judgments are in all the earth.
8 Memor fuit in sæculum testamenti sui; verbi quod mandavit in mille generationes:
105:8 He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,
105:9 the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac,
10 et statuit illud Jacob in præceptum, et Israël in testamentum æternum,
105:10 and confirmed it to Jacob for a statute; to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
11 dicens: Tibi dabo terram Chanaan, funiculum hæreditatis vestræ:
105:11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance,”
105:12 when they were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners in it.
105:13 They went about from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people.
105:14 He allowed no one to do them wrong. Yes, he reproved kings for their sakes,
15 Nolite tangere christos meos, et in prophetis meis nolite malignari.
105:15 “Don’t touch my anointed ones! Do my prophets no harm!”
16 Et vocavit famem super terram, et omne firmamentum panis contrivit.
105:16 He called for a famine on the land. He destroyed the food supplies.
17 Misit ante eos virum: in servum venundatus est, Joseph.
105:17 He sent a man before them. Joseph was sold for a slave.
18 Humiliaverunt in compedibus pedes ejus; ferrum pertransiit animam ejus:
105:18 They bruised his feet with shackles. His neck was locked in irons,
19 donec veniret verbum ejus. Eloquium Domini inflammavit eum.
105:19 until the time that his word happened, and Yahweh’s word proved him true.
20 Misit rex, et solvit eum; princeps populorum, et dimisit eum.
105:20 The king sent and freed him, even the ruler of peoples, and let him go free.
21 Constituit eum dominum domus suæ, et principem omnis possessionis suæ:
105:21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all of his possessions,
105:22 to discipline his princes at his pleasure, and to teach his elders wisdom.
23 Et intravit Israël in Ægyptum, et Jacob accola fuit in terra Cham.
105:23 Israel also came into Egypt. Jacob lived in the land of Ham.
24 Et auxit populum suum vehementer, et firmavit eum super inimicos ejus.
105:24 He increased his people greatly, and made them stronger than their adversaries.
105:25 He turned their heart to hate his people, to conspire against his servants.
26 Misit Moysen servum suum; Aaron quem elegit ipsum.
105:26 He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27 Posuit in eis verba signorum suorum, et prodigiorum in terra Cham.
105:27 They performed miracles among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.
105:28 He sent darkness, and made it dark. They didn’t rebel against his words.
29 Convertit aquas eorum in sanguinem, et occidit pisces eorum.
105:29 He turned their waters into blood, and killed their fish.
30 Edidit terra eorum ranas in penetralibus regum ipsorum.
105:30 Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the rooms of their kings.
31 Dixit, et venit cœnomyia et ciniphes in omnibus finibus eorum.
105:31 He spoke, and swarms of flies came, and lice in all their borders.
32 Posuit pluvias eorum grandinem: ignem comburentem in terra ipsorum.
105:32 He gave them hail for rain, with lightning in their land.
33 Et percussit vineas eorum, et ficulneas eorum, et contrivit lignum finium eorum.
105:33 He struck their vines and also their fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.
105:34 He spoke, and the locusts came with the grasshoppers, without number.
35 et comedit omne fœnum in terra eorum, et comedit omnem fructum terræ eorum.
105:35 They ate up every plant in their land, and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 Et percussit omne primogenitum in terra eorum, primitias omnis laboris eorum.
105:36 He struck also all the firstborn in their land, the first fruits of all their manhood.
105:37 He brought them out with silver and gold. There was not one feeble person among his tribes.
38 Lætata est Ægyptus in profectione eorum, quia incubuit timor eorum super eos.
105:38 Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen on them.
105:39 He spread a cloud for a covering, fire to give light in the night.
40 Petierunt, et venit coturnix, et pane cæli saturavit eos.
105:40 They asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of the sky.
41 Dirupit petram, et fluxerunt aquæ: abierunt in sicco flumina.
105:41 He opened the rock, and waters gushed out. They ran as a river in the dry places.
105:42 For he remembered his holy word, and Abraham, his servant.
43 Et eduxit populum suum in exsultatione, et electos suos in lætitia.
105:43 He brought his people out with joy, his chosen with singing.
44 Et dedit illis regiones gentium, et labores populorum possederunt:
105:44 He gave them the lands of the nations. They took the labor of the peoples in possession,
105:45 that they might keep his statutes, and observe his laws. Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 105.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CIV)

"Bless the Lord, O my soul." Let the soul of us all, made one in Christ, say this. "O Lord my God, Thou art magnified exceedingly!" (ver. 1). Where art Thou magnified? "Confession and beauty Thou hast put on." Confess ye, that ye may be beautified, that He may put you on. "Clothed with light as a garment" (ver. 2).

  2. Quotes verse 105:15 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 9–11)

… commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men; but my mercy will I not take away from him," meaning by stripes the strokes of correction. Hence that saying, "Touch ye not my christs." For what else is that than, Do not harm them?

  3. Quotes verse 105:15 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XXI)

Having therefore become partakers of Christ, ye are properly called Christs, and of you God said, Touch not My Christs, or anointed.

  4. Quotes verse 105:37 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters XXV–XXVI)

This is the case where, as we have observed, it often stands instead of with; as for instance, "I will go into thy house in burnt offerings," instead of with burnt offerings and "he brought them forth also by silver and gold," that is to say with silver and gold and "thou goest not forth in our armies" instead of …

  5. Quotes verse 105:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 6–7)

And for the same reason we cannot better interpret the words of the psalm, "He hath been mindful of His covenant for ever, the word which He commanded to a thousand generations," than by understanding it to mean "to all generations." "And he cast him into the abyss,"--i.e., cast the devil into the abyss.
