1 Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Make his doings known among the peoples.
2 Sing to Him—sing praise to Him, || Meditate on all His wonders.
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him! Tell of all his marvelous works.
3 Boast yourselves in His Holy Name, || The heart of those seeking YHWH rejoices.
3 Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.
4 Seek YHWH and His strength, || Seek His face continually.
4 Seek Yahweh and his strength. Seek his face forever more.
5 Remember His wonders that He did, || His signs and the judgments of His mouth.
5 Remember his marvelous works that he has done: his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,
6 O seed of Abraham, His servant, || O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones.
6 you offspring of Abraham, his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.
7 He [is] our God YHWH, || His judgments [are] in all the earth.
7 He is Yahweh, our God. His judgments are in all the earth.
8 He has remembered His covenant for all time, || The word He commanded to one thousand generations,
8 He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,
9 That He has made with Abraham, || And His oath to Isaac,
9 the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac,
10 And establishes it to Jacob for a statute, || To Israel—a perpetual covenant,
10 and confirmed it to Jacob for a statute; to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
11 Saying, “I give the land of Canaan to you, || The portion of your inheritance,”
11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance,”
12 In their being few in number, || But a few, and sojourners in it.
12 when they were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners in it.
13 And they go up and down, from nation to nation, || From a kingdom to another people.
13 They went about from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people.
14 He has not permitted any to oppress them || And He reproves kings for their sakes.
14 He allowed no one to do them wrong. Yes, he reproved kings for their sakes,
15 “Do not strike against My anointed, || And do no evil to My prophets.”
15 “Don’t touch my anointed ones! Do my prophets no harm!”
16 And He calls a famine on the land, || He has broken the whole staff of bread.
16 He called for a famine on the land. He destroyed the food supplies.
17 He has sent a man before them, || Joseph has been sold for a servant.
17 He sent a man before them. Joseph was sold for a slave.
18 They have afflicted his feet with chains, || Iron has entered his soul,
18 They bruised his feet with shackles. His neck was locked in irons,
19 Until the time of the coming of His word || The saying of YHWH has tried him.
19 until the time that his word happened, and Yahweh’s word proved him true.
20 The king has sent, and looses him, || The ruler of the peoples, and draws him out.
20 The king sent and freed him, even the ruler of peoples, and let him go free.
21 He has made him lord of his house, || And ruler over all his possessions.
21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all of his possessions,
22 To bind his chiefs at his pleasure, || And he makes his elderly wise.
22 to discipline his princes at his pleasure, and to teach his elders wisdom.
23 And Israel comes into Egypt, || And Jacob has sojourned in the land of Ham.
23 Israel also came into Egypt. Jacob lived in the land of Ham.
24 And He makes His people very fruitful, || And makes it mightier than its adversaries.
24 He increased his people greatly, and made them stronger than their adversaries.
25 He turned their heart to hate His people, || To conspire against His servants.
25 He turned their heart to hate his people, to conspire against his servants.
26 He has sent His servant Moses, || Aaron whom He had fixed on.
26 He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27 They have set among them the matters of His signs, || And wonders in the land of Ham.
27 They performed miracles among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.
28 He has sent darkness, and it is dark, || And they have not provoked His word.
28 He sent darkness, and made it dark. They didn’t rebel against his words.
29 He has turned their waters to blood, || And puts their fish to death.
29 He turned their waters into blood, and killed their fish.
30 Their land has teemed [with] frogs, || In the inner chambers of their kings.
30 Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the rooms of their kings.
31 He has commanded, and the beetle comes, || Lice into all their border.
31 He spoke, and swarms of flies came, and lice in all their borders.
32 He has made their showers hail, || A flaming fire [is] in their land.
32 He gave them hail for rain, with lightning in their land.
33 And He strikes their vine and their fig, || And shatters the trees of their border.
33 He struck their vines and also their fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He has commanded, and the locust comes, || And the cankerworm—innumerable,
34 He spoke, and the locusts came with the grasshoppers, without number.
35 And it consumes every herb in their land, || And it consumes the fruit of their ground.
35 They ate up every plant in their land, and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 And He strikes every firstborn in their land, || The first-fruit of all their strength,
36 He struck also all the firstborn in their land, the first fruits of all their manhood.
37 And brings them out with silver and gold, || And there is not a feeble one in its tribes.
37 He brought them out with silver and gold. There was not one feeble person among his tribes.
38 Egypt has rejoiced in their going forth, || For their fear had fallen on them.
38 Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen on them.
39 He has spread a cloud for a covering, || And fire to enlighten the night.
39 He spread a cloud for a covering, fire to give light in the night.
40 They have asked, and He brings quails, || And satisfies them [with] bread of the heavens.
40 They asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of the sky.
41 He has opened a rock, and waters flow, || They have gone on in dry places—a river.
41 He opened the rock, and waters gushed out. They ran as a river in the dry places.
42 For He has remembered His holy word, || With His servant Abraham,
42 For he remembered his holy word, and Abraham, his servant.
43 And He brings forth His people with joy, || His chosen ones with singing.
43 He brought his people out with joy, his chosen with singing.
44 And He gives to them the lands of nations, || And they possess the labor of peoples,
44 He gave them the lands of the nations. They took the labor of the peoples in possession,
45 That they may observe His statutes, || And may keep His laws. Praise YAH!
45 that they might keep his statutes, and observe his laws. Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CIV)

"Bless the Lord, O my soul." Let the soul of us all, made one in Christ, say this. "O Lord my God, Thou art magnified exceedingly!" (ver. 1). Where art Thou magnified? "Confession and beauty Thou hast put on." Confess ye, that ye may be beautified, that He may put you on. "Clothed with light as a garment" (ver. 2).

  2. Quotes verse 105:15 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 9–11)

… commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men; but my mercy will I not take away from him," meaning by stripes the strokes of correction. Hence that saying, "Touch ye not my christs." For what else is that than, Do not harm them?

  3. Quotes verse 105:15 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XXI)

Having therefore become partakers of Christ, ye are properly called Christs, and of you God said, Touch not My Christs, or anointed.

  4. Quotes verse 105:37 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters XXV–XXVI)

This is the case where, as we have observed, it often stands instead of with; as for instance, "I will go into thy house in burnt offerings," instead of with burnt offerings and "he brought them forth also by silver and gold," that is to say with silver and gold and "thou goest not forth in our armies" instead of …

  5. Quotes verse 105:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 6–7)

And for the same reason we cannot better interpret the words of the psalm, "He hath been mindful of His covenant for ever, the word which He commanded to a thousand generations," than by understanding it to mean "to all generations." "And he cast him into the abyss,"--i.e., cast the devil into the abyss.
