Notes on this text (3)

1 For the end, among the Hymns of instruction by David, 2 when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, Lo, is not David hid with us? 3 Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy might. 4 O God, hear my prayer; hearken to the words of my mouth. 5 For strangers have risen up against me, and mighty men have sought my life: they have not set God before them. Pause. 6 For lo! God assists me; and the Lord is the helper of my soul. 7 He shall return evil to mine enemies; utterly destroy them in thy truth. 8 I will willingly sacrifice to thee: I will give thanks to thy name, O Lord; for [it is] good. 9 For thou hast delivered me out of all affliction, and mine eye has seen [my desire] upon mine enemies.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 54.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

Of this Psalm we undertake to treat with you, as far as the Lord supplieth us. A brother biddeth us that we may have the will, and prayeth that we may have the power.
