Notes on this text (4)

1 Unto the end. In verses, the understanding of David, 2 when the Ziphites had arrived and they said to Saul, “Has not David been hidden with us?” 3 Save me, O God, by your name, and judge me in your virtue. 4 O God, listen to my prayer. Pay attention to the words of my mouth. 5 For strangers have risen up against me, and the strong have sought my soul. And they have not set God before their eyes. 6 For behold, God is my helper, and the Lord is the protector of my soul. 7 Turn back the evils upon my adversaries, and ruin them by your truth. 8 I will freely sacrifice to you, and I will confess your name, O God, because it is good. 9 For you have quickly rescued me from all tribulation, and my eye has looked down upon my enemies.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 54.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LIII)

Of this Psalm we undertake to treat with you, as far as the Lord supplieth us. A brother biddeth us that we may have the will, and prayeth that we may have the power.
