2 Hearken to my words, O Lord, attend to my cry.
1 Al Músico principal: sobre Nehiloth: Salmo de David. ESCUCHA, oh Jehová, mis palabras; considera la meditación mía.
1 For the Chief Musician, with the flutes. A Psalm by David. Give ear to my words, Yahweh. Consider my meditation.
3 Attend to the voice of my supplication, my King, and my God: for to thee, O Lord, will I pray.
2 Listen to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for I pray to you.
4 In the morning thou shalt hear my voice: in the morning will I wait upon thee, and will look up.
3 Yahweh, in the morning you will hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.
5 For thou art not a God that desires iniquity; neither shall the worker of wickedness dwell with thee.
4 For you are not a God who has pleasure in wickedness. Evil can’t live with you.
6 Neither shall the transgressors continue in thy sight: thou hatest, O Lord, all them that work iniquity.
5 The arrogant will not stand in your sight. You hate all workers of iniquity.
7 Thou wilt destroy all that speak falsehood: the Lord abhors the bloody and deceitful man.
6 You will destroy those who speak lies. Yahweh abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
8 But I will enter into thine house in the multitude of thy mercy: I will worship in thy fear toward thy holy temple.
7 But as for me, in the abundance of your loving kindness I will come into your house. I will bow toward your holy temple in reverence of you.
9 Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make my way plain before thy face.
8 Lead me, Yahweh, in your righteousness because of my enemies. Make your way straight before my face.
10 For there is no truth in their mouth; their heart is vain; their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit.
9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth. Their heart is destruction. Their throat is an open tomb. They flatter with their tongue.
11 Judge them, O God; let them fail of their counsels: cast them out according to the abundance of their ungodliness; for they have provoked thee, O Lord.
10 Hold them guilty, God. Let them fall by their own counsels. Thrust them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against you.
12 But let all that trust on thee be glad in thee: they shall exult for ever, and thou shalt dwell among them; and all that love thy name shall rejoice in thee.
11 But let all those who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them always shout for joy, because you defend them. Let them also who love your name be joyful in you.
13 For thou, Lord, shalt bless the righteous: thou hast compassed us as with a shield of favour.
12 For you will bless the righteous. Yahweh, you will surround him with favor as with a shield.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm V)

The title of the Psalm is, "For her who receiveth the inheritance." The Church then is signified, who receiveth for her inheritance eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ; that she may possess God Himself, in cleaving to whom she may be blessed, according to that, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth." What earth, but that …

  2. Quotes verse 5:12 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book X)

For when I am wicked, to confess to Thee is naught but to be dissatisfied with myself; but when I am truly devout, it is naught but not to attribute it to myself, because Thou, O Lord, dost "bless the righteous;" but first Thou justifiest him "ungodly." My confession, therefore, O my God, in Thy sight, is made unto Thee …

  3. Quotes verse 5:9 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXIII)

For the prophet makes mention thereof, neither did he call them merely a sepulchre, "but their throat an open sepulchre." Such are many men now also, decking themselves indeed outwardly, but full of iniquity within.

  4. Quotes verse 5:9 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VI)

… and having accused him before philosophers as judges, and having assembled an audience of Gentiles, lest if Christians gave judgment, the judges might be thought to shew favour,--Tell us what thou preachest, said Archelaus to Manes. And he, whose mouth was as an open sepulchre, began first with blasphemy against the Maker of all things, saying, The God of …

  5. Quotes verse 5:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXXIII)

"Thou hatest, O Lord," saith he, "all them that work iniquity." And immediately after, "Thou shalt destroy all them that speak a lie." Either "iniquity" and "a lie" are upon a level; or, "Thou shalt destroy," is more than "Thou hatest." For he who is held in hatred, is not immediately punished by destruction.
