PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Therefore, holy brothers, sharers in the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession: Jesus.
1 Therefore, holy brothers, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession: Jesus,
2 He is faithful to the One who made him, just as Moses also was, with his entire house.
2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, as also Moses was in all his house.
3 For this Jesus was considered worthy of greater glory than Moses, so much so that the house which he has built holds a greater honor than the former one.
3 For he has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, because he who built the house has more honor than the house.
4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the One who has created all things.
4 For every house is built by someone; but he who built all things is God.
5 And certainly Moses was faithful, with his entire house, like any servant, as a testimony to those things that would soon be said.
5 Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were afterward to be spoken,
6 Yet truly, Christ is like a Son in his own house. We are that house, if we firmly retain the faithfulness and the glory of hope, even unto the end.
6 but Christ is faithful as a Son over his house. We are his house, if we hold fast our confidence and the glorying of our hope firm to the end.
7 Because of this, it is just as the Holy Spirit says: “If today you hear his voice,
7 Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says, “Today if you will hear his voice,
8 harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, the very day of temptation, in the desert,
8 don’t harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of the trial in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers tested me, even though they had seen and examined my works for forty years.
9 where your fathers tested me and tried me, and saw my deeds for forty years.
10 For this reason, I was enraged against this generation, and I said: They always wander astray in heart. For they have not known my ways.
10 Therefore I was displeased with that generation, and said, ‘They always err in their heart, but they didn’t know my ways.’
11 So it is as I swore in my wrath: They shall not enter into my rest!”
11 As I swore in my wrath, ‘They will not enter into my rest.’”
12 Be cautious, brothers, lest perhaps there may be, in any of you, an evil heart of unbelief, turning aside from the living God.
12 Beware, brothers, lest perhaps there might be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God;
13 Instead, exhort one another every day, while it is still called ‘today,’ so that none of you may become hardened through the falseness of sin.
13 but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called “today”, lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we have been made participants in Christ. This is only so, if we firmly retain the beginning of his substance, even unto the end.
14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence firm to the end,
15 For it has been said: “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts, in the same manner as in the former provocation.”
15 while it is said, “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion.”
16 For some of those listening did provoke him. But not all of these had set forth from Egypt through Moses.
16 For who, when they heard, rebelled? Wasn’t it all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?
16 τίνες γὰρ ἀκούσαντες παρεπίκραναν; ἀλλ᾽ οὐ πάντες οἱ ἐξελθόντες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου διὰ Μωϋσέως;
17 So against whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not those who had sinned, whose dead bodies lay prostrate in the desert?
17 With whom was he displeased forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
17 τίσι δὲ προσώχθισε τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη; οὐχὶ τοῖς ἁμαρτήσασιν, ὧν τὰ κῶλα ἔπεσεν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ;
18 But to whom did he swear that they would not enter into his rest, except to those who were incredulous?
18 To whom did he swear that they wouldn’t enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?
18 τίσι δὲ ὤμοσε μὴ εἰσελεύσεσθαι εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσιν αὐτοῦ εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἀπειθήσασι;
19 And so, we perceive that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
19 We see that they weren’t able to enter in because of unbelief.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 3:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Hebrews (Homily VI)

    Paul, having treated of hope, and having said that "We are His house, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end" ( c. iii. ver. 6 ); next shows that we ought to look forward with firmness, and he proves this from the Scriptures.

  2. Quotes verse 3:2 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XIV–XVIII)

    … righteous man, and blameless, truthful, God-fearing, and one that kept himself from all evil." But bringing an accusation against himself, he said, "No man is free from defilement, even if his life be but of one day." Moses was called faithful in all God's house; and through his instrumentality, God punished Egypt with plagues and tortures.

  3. Quotes verse 3:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter VI)

    … Moses himself, being a man of God, was indeed given as a god before Pharaoh; but he is not properly termed Lord, nor is called God by the prophets, but is spoken of by the Spirit as "Moses, the faithful minister and servant of God," which also he was.

  4. Quotes verse 3:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXVII)

    For neither when John saith, "He is mightier than I," doth he say it as comparing them; nor Paul, when remembering Moses he writes, "For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses," doth he so write by way of comparison; and He Himself too, in saying, "Behold, a greater than Solomon is here," speaks not as making …

  5. Quotes verse 3:13 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XV)

    According as Paul says in another place, And exhort each other daily, while it is called to-day; meaning, "continually." For as we may not speak of the "beginning of the days" of Christ, so neither suffer thou that any should ever speak of the end of His kingdom.
