1 A Psalm of David himself. The Lord has reigned: let the peoples be angry. He sits upon the cherubim: let the earth be moved. 2 The Lord is great in Zion, and he is high above all peoples. 3 May they confess to your great name, for it is terrible and holy. 4 And the honor of the king loves judgment. You have prepared guidance. You have accomplished judgment and justice in Jacob. 5 Exalt the Lord our God, and adore the footstool of his feet, for it is holy. 6 Moses and Aaron are among his priests, and Samuel is among those who call upon his name. They called upon the Lord, and he heeded them. 7 He spoke to them in the pillar of the cloud. They kept his testimonies and the precept that he gave them. 8 You heeded them, O Lord our God. You were a forgiving God to them, though taking vengeance on all their inventions. 9 Exalt the Lord our God, and adore on his holy mountain. For the Lord our God is holy.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 99.
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
(ver. 1). The new man knoweth this, the old man knoweth it not. The old man is the old life, and the new man the new life: the old life is derived from Adam, the new life is formed in Christ. But in this Psalm, the whole world is enjoined to sing a new song.

And those who said, "The Lord hath reigned; let the people be enraged: [even] He who sitteth upon the cherubim; let the earth be moved," were thus predicting partly that wrath from all nations which after His ascension came upon those who believed in Him, with the movement of the whole earth against the Church; and partly the fact that, …
