1 Y ACONTECIÓ un día, que enseñando él al pueblo en el templo, y anunciando el evangelio, llegáronse los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los escribas, con los ancianos;
2 и҆ рѣ́ша къ немꙋ̀, глаго́люще: рцы̀ на́мъ, ко́ею ѡ҆́бластїю сїѧ̑ твори́ши, и҆лѝ кто̀ є҆́сть да́вый тебѣ̀ вла́сть сїю̀;
4 креще́нїе і҆ѡа́нново съ нб҃се́ ли бѣ̀, и҆лѝ ѿ человѣ̑къ;
5 Ѻ҆ни́ же помышлѧ́хꙋ въ себѣ̀, глаго́люще, ꙗ҆́кѡ а҆́ще рече́мъ: съ нб҃сѐ, рече́тъ: почто̀ ᲂу҆̀бо не вѣ́ровасте є҆мꙋ̀;
7 Y respondieron que no sabían de dónde.
15 И҆ и҆зве́дше є҆го̀ во́нъ и҆з̾ вїногра́да, ᲂу҆би́ша. Что̀ ᲂу҆̀бо сотвори́тъ и҆̀мъ господи́нъ вїногра́да;
17 Ѻ҆́нъ же воззрѣ́въ на ни́хъ, речѐ: что̀ ᲂу҆̀бо пи́саное сїѐ: ка́мень, є҆гѡ́же небрего́ша зи́ждꙋщїи, се́й бы́сть во главꙋ̀ ᲂу҆́гла;
22 досто́итъ ли на́мъ ке́сареви да́нь даѧ́ти, и҆лѝ нѝ;
23 Разꙋмѣ́въ же и҆́хъ лꙋка́вство, речѐ къ ни̑мъ: что́ мѧ и҆скꙋша́ете;
40 Y no osaron más preguntarle algo.
41 ка́кѡ глаго́лютъ хрⷭ҇та̀ сн҃а дв҃дова бы́ти;
44 Дв҃дъ ᲂу҆̀бо гдⷭ҇а є҆го̀ нарица́етъ, и҆ ка́кѡ сн҃ъ є҆мꙋ̀ є҆́сть;
46 Guardaos de los escribas, que quieren andar con ropas largas, y aman las salutaciones en las plazas, y las primeras sillas en las sinagogas, y los primeros asientos en las cenas;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 20:34 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIV, Chapters 20–22)

    … complete this most blessed city would have been as great though no one had sinned, as it is now that the grace of God gathers its citizens out of the multitude of sinners, so long as the children of this world generate and are generated. And therefore that marriage, worthy of the happiness of Paradise, should have had desirable fruit …

  2. Quotes verse 20:17 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXVIII)

    The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner; and every one that falleth upon it shall be broken." But Matthew, that they themselves delivered the sentence.

  3. Quotes verse 20:35 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapters 17–19)

    But Enos means man in so restricted a sense, that Hebrew linguists tell us it cannot be applied to woman: it is the equivalent of the "child of the resurrection," when they neither marry nor are given in marriage. For there shall be no generation in that place to which regeneration shall have brought us.

  4. Quotes verse 20:36 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXX)

    "For in the resurrection," saith He, "they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels of God in Heaven." But Luke saith, "As Sons of God." If then they marry not, the question is vain.

  5. Quotes verse 20:2–8 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter I — 6-14)

    And the Lord says to them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things." And they were confounded by means of John; and in them were the words fulfilled, "I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.
