WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon) PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition) 1 Jesus called the twelve disciples together. He gave them power and authority over all demons, and the ability to heal diseases. 1 He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
2 Then he sent them out to proclaim God's kingdom and to heal the sick. 2 He sent them out to preach God’s Kingdom and to heal the sick.
3 “Take nothing with you for the journey,” he told them. “No walking stick, no bag, no bread, no money, not even any extra clothes. 3 He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey—no staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money. Don’t have two tunics each.
4 Whatever house you enter, stay there, and when you leave, leave from there. 4 Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there.
5 If people refuse to accept you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave town as a warning against them.” 5 As many as don’t receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
6 They left and went around the villages, announcing the good news and healing everywhere they went. 6 They departed and went throughout the villages, preaching the Good News and healing everywhere.
7 Herod the tetrarch had heard about all that was happening, and he was very puzzled. Some were saying that John had been raised from the dead; 7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him; and he was very perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,
8 others that Elijah had appeared; still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. 8 and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.
9 Herod said, “There's no question I beheaded John. So who is this man? I'm hearing all these things about him.” And he tried to find a way to meet Jesus. 9 Herod said, “I beheaded John, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” He sought to see him.
10 When the apostles returned they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he left with them and went to a town called Bethsaida. 10 The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them and withdrew apart to a desert region of a city called Bethsaida.
11 However, the crowds found out where he was going and followed him there. He welcomed them and explained the kingdom of God to them, and healed those who needed healing. 11 But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them of God’s Kingdom, and he cured those who needed healing.
12 Late in the day, the twelve disciples came to him and said, “You should send the crowd away now so they can go to the villages and farms nearby and find a place to stay and food to eat—there's nothing here where we are.” 12 The day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms and lodge and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.”
13 “You give them something to eat!” said Jesus. “All we have here are five loaves and two fish—unless you want us to go and buy food for everyone,” they said. 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.”
14 There were about five thousand men present. “Sit them down in groups of about fifty,” he told his disciples. 14 For they were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”
15 The disciples did so, and everybody sat down. 15 They did so, and made them all sit down.
16 Jesus picked up the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed the food and broke it into pieces. He kept on giving the food to the disciples to share with the people. 16 He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to the sky, he blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17 Everybody ate until they were full, and then twelve baskets of leftovers were collected. 17 They ate and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over.
18 At another time, when Jesus was praying in private with just his disciples with him, he asked them, “All these crowds of people—who do they say I am?” 18 As he was praying alone, the disciples were near him, and he asked them, “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”
18 Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτὸν προσευχόμενον καταμόνας, συνῆσαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί, καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς λέγων· τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ὄχλοι εἶναι;
19 “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others say one of the ancient prophets risen from the dead,” they replied. 19 They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.”
20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” “God's Messiah,” Peter replied. 20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
21 Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anybody about this. 21 But he warned them and commanded them to tell this to no one,
22 “The Son of man must experience terrible sufferings,” he said. “He will be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the religious teachers. He will be killed, but on the third day he will rise again.” 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”
23 “If any one of you wants to follow me, you must deny yourself, pick up your cross daily, and follow me,” Jesus told all of them. 23 He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
24 “For if you want to save your life, you will lose it; and if you lose your life for my sake, you will save it. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.
25 What do you benefit by gaining the whole world if you end up lost or destroyed? 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?
25 τί γὰρ ὠφελεῖται ἄνθρωπος κερδήσας τὸν κόσμον ὅλον, ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἀπολέσας ἢ ζημιωθείς;
26 If you are ashamed of me and my message, the Son of man will be ashamed of you when he comes in his glory, and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 26 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.
27 I tell you the truth, some standing here won't taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” 27 But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here who will in no way taste of death until they see God’s Kingdom.”
28 About eight days later, after he had told them this, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him and went up a mountain to pray. 28 About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.
29 While he was praying, his face changed in appearance, and his clothing became a dazzling white. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.
30 Two men appeared in brilliant glory. They were Moses and Elijah, and they began to talk with Jesus. 30 Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,
31 They spoke about his death, which would soon happen in Jerusalem. 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 Peter and the others were asleep. When they woke up they saw Jesus in his glory, and the two men standing next to him. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.
33 As the two men were about to leave, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it's great to be here. Let's make some shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He really didn't know what he was saying. 33 As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.
34 While he was speaking a cloud came and spread over them. They were terrified as they entered the cloud. 34 While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.
35 A voice spoke from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him!” 35 A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”
36 When the voice finished speaking, Jesus was there alone. They kept this to themselves, and didn't tell anyone at that time what they'd seen. 36 When the voice came, Jesus was found alone. They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
37 The next day, when they had come down the mountain, a huge crowd was waiting to meet Jesus. 37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.
38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, please look at my son. He's my only child. 38 Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only born child.
39 A spirit possesses him and he screams immediately. It sends him into convulsions and makes him foam at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him alone and it causes him a lot of pain. 39 Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams; and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.
40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't.” 40 I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.”
41 “What an unbelieving and corrupt people you are! How long do I have to remain here with you, and put up with you?” said Jesus. “Bring your son here.” 41 Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
42 Even as the boy came over, the demon sent him into convulsions, throwing him to the ground. But Jesus intervened, rebuking the evil spirit and healing the boy, and then gave him back to his father. 42 While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43 Everyone was amazed at this demonstration of God's power. However, even though everyone was amazed by all he did, Jesus warned his disciples, 43 They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
44 “Listen carefully to what I'm telling you: the Son of man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” 44 “Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.”
45 But they didn't understand what this meant. Its meaning was hidden from them so they didn't realize its implications, and they were afraid to ask him about it. 45 But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
46 Then an argument started among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. 46 An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest.
47 But Jesus, knowing what they were arguing about, picked up and placed a small child next to him. 47 Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,
48 Then he said to them, “Anyone who accepts this little child in my name accepts me, and anyone who accepts me accepts the one who sent me. Whoever is least among you all is the greatest.” 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.”
49 John spoke up, saying, “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him because he wasn't one of us.” 49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.”
50 “Don't stop him,” Jesus replied. “Anyone who isn't against you is for you.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”
51 As the time approached for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem. 51 It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem
52 He sent messengers on ahead to a Samaritan village to get things ready for him. 52 and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.
53 But the people would not welcome him because he was determined to press on to Jerusalem. 53 They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.
54 When James and John saw this, they asked Jesus, “Master, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to burn them up?” 54 When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”
54 ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωάννης εἶπον· Κύριε, θέλεις εἴπωμεν πῦρ καταβῆναι ἀπὸ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἀναλῶσαι αὐτούς, ὡς καὶ Ἠλίας ἐποίησε;
55 But Jesus turned, and reprimanded them. 55 But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.
56 Then they proceeded to another village. 56 For the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” They went to another village.
57 While they were walking, one man told Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go!” 57 As they went on the way, a certain man said to him, “I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord.”
58 Jesus told the man, “Foxes have their dens, and wild birds have their nests, but the Son of man doesn't even have a place to rest his head.” 58 Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59 He told another man, “Follow me.” But the man replied, “Master, first let me go home and bury my father.” 59 He said to another, “Follow me!” But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”
60 “Let the dead bury their own dead,” Jesus replied. “You go and proclaim God's kingdom.” 60 But Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and announce God’s Kingdom.”
61 Another man said, “Lord, I will follow you! But first let me go home and say goodbye to my family.” 61 Another also said, “I want to follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say good-bye to those who are at my house.”
62 But Jesus told him, “Nobody once they've started plowing and then looks back is fit for God's kingdom.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for God’s Kingdom.”
