1 And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put Him to death;
1 Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
2 and having bound Him, they led [Him] away, and delivered Him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
2 They bound him, led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
3 Then Judas—he who delivered Him up—having seen that He was condemned, having regretted, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and to the elders, saying,
3 Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that Jesus was condemned, felt remorse, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 “I sinned, having delivered up innocent blood”; and they said, “What [is that] to us? You will see!”
4 saying, “I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.”
5 And having cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and having gone away, he strangled himself.
5 He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary and departed. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood”;
6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It’s not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.”
7 and having taken counsel, they bought the potter’s field with them, for the burial of strangers;
7 They took counsel, and bought the potter’s field with them to bury strangers in.
8 therefore that field was called, “Field of Blood,” to this day.
8 Therefore that field has been called “The Field of Blood” to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him who has been priced, whom they of the sons of Israel priced,
9 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him upon whom a price had been set, whom some of the children of Israel priced,
10 and gave them for the potter’s field, as the LORD appointed to me.”
10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”
11 And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “You say [it].”
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “So you say.”
12 And in His being accused by the chief priests and the elders, He did not answer anything;
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 then Pilate says to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they witness against You?”
13 Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how many things they testify against you?”
13 τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· οὐκ ἀκούεις πόσα σου καταμαρτυροῦσι;
14 And He did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor wondered greatly.
14 He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
15 And at the celebration the governor had been accustomed to release one to the multitude, a prisoner, whom they willed,
15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner whom they desired.
16 and they had a noted prisoner then, called Barabbas,
16 They had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas.
17 therefore they having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you will [that] I may release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?”
17 When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
17 συνηγμένων οὖν αὐτῶν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλᾶτος· τίνα θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν; Βαραββᾶν ἢ Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν;
18 For he had known that they had delivered Him up because of envy.
18 For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up.
19 And as he is sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Nothing—to you and to that Righteous One, for I suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.”
20 And the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they might ask for themselves Barabbas, and might destroy Jesus;
20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
21 and the governor answering said to them, “Which of the two will you [that] I may release to you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
21 But the governor answered them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!”
22 Pilate says to them, “What then will I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all say to him, “Let [Him] be crucified!”
22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do to Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let him be crucified!”
23 And the governor said, “Why, what evil did He do?” And they were crying out the more, saying, “Let [Him] be crucified!”
23 But the governor said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out exceedingly, saying, “Let him be crucified!”
24 And Pilate having seen that it profits nothing, but rather a tumult is made, having taken water, he washed the hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent from the blood of this Righteous One; you will see [to it] yourselves”;
24 So when Pilate saw that nothing was being gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person. You see to it.”
25 and all the people answering said, “His blood [is] on us, and on our children!”
25 All the people answered, “May his blood be on us and on our children!”
26 Then he released Barabbas to them, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered [Him] up that He may be crucified;
26 Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.
27 then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus to the Praetorium, gathered to Him all the band;
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole garrison together against him.
28 and having unclothed Him, they put a crimson cloak around Him,
28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
29 and having plaited Him a garland out of thorns they put [it] on His head, and [put] a reed in His right hand, and having kneeled before Him, they were mocking Him, saying, “Hail, the King of the Jews!”
29 They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
30 And having spit on Him, they took the reed, and were striking on His head;
30 They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.
31 and when they had mocked Him, they took off the cloak from Him, and put His own garments on Him, and led Him away to crucify [Him].
31 When they had mocked him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32 And coming forth, they found a man, a Cyrenian, by name Simon: they impressed him that he might carry His cross;
32 As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross.
33 and having come to a place called Golgotha, which is called “Place of [the] Skull,”
33 When they came to a place called “Golgotha”, that is to say, “The place of a skull,”
34 they gave Him vinegar mixed with gall to drink, and having tasted, He would not drink.
34 they gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink.
35 And having crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting a lot, [[that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments to themselves, and they cast a lot over My clothing”;]]
35 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots,
36 and sitting down, they were watching Him there,
36 and they sat and watched him there.
37 and they put up over His head, His accusation written: “THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
37 They set up over his head the accusation against him written, “THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
38 Then two robbers are crucified with Him, one on the right hand and one on the left,
38 Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left.
39 and those passing by kept slandering Him, wagging their heads,
39 Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads
40 and saying, “You that are throwing down the temple, and in three days building [it], save Yourself; if You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
40 and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
41 And in like manner also the chief priests mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,
41 Likewise the chief priests also mocking with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said,
42 “He saved others; He is not able to save Himself! If He is King of Israel, let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe Him;
42 “He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
43 He has trusted on God, let Him now deliver Him if He wants Him, because He said, I am [the] Son of God”;
43 He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
44 with the same also the robbers, who were crucified with Him, were reproaching Him.
44 The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.
45 And from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land to the ninth hour,
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
46 and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” That is, “My God, My God, why did You forsake Me?”
46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lima sabachthani?” That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
46 περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ἀνεβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων· ἠλὶ ἠλί, λιμᾶ σαβαχθανί; τοῦτ᾽ ἔστι, Θεέ μου Θεέ μου, ἱνατί με ἐγκατέλιπες;
47 And certain of those standing there having heard, said, “He calls Elijah”;
47 Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
48 and immediately, one of them having run, and having taken a sponge, having filled [it] with vinegar, and having put [it] on a reed, was giving Him to drink,
48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.
49 but the rest said, “Let alone, let us see if Elijah comes—about to save Him.”
49 The rest said, “Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And Jesus having again cried with a great voice, yielded the spirit;
50 Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.
51 and behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,
51 Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
52 and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the holy ones who have fallen asleep, arose,
52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
53 and having come forth out of the tombs after His rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying, “Truly this was God’s Son.”
54 Now the centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were done, were terrified, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
55 And there were there many women beholding from afar, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him,
55 Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him.
56 among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 And evening having come, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus,
57 When evening had come, a rich man from Arimathaea named Joseph, who himself was also Jesus’ disciple, came.
58 he having gone near to Pilate, asked for himself the body of Jesus; then Pilate commanded the body to be given back.
58 This man went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
59 And having taken the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,
59 Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth
60 and laid it in his new tomb that he hewed in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away;
60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock. Then he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.
61 now Mary the Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.
61 Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
62 And on the next day that is after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,
62 Now on the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,
63 saying, “Lord, we have remembered that this deceiver said while yet living, After three days I rise;
63 saying, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise again.’
64 command, then, the grave to be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples, having come by night, may steal Him away, and may say to the people, He rose from the dead, and the last deceit will be worse than the first.”
64 Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 And Pilate said to them, “You have a guard, go away, make [it] secure—as you have known”;
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
66 and they, having gone, made the grave secure, having sealed the stone, together with the guard.
66 So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

And as it were after such a feast and dainties in this way given to …

  3. Quotes verse 27:63 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLIII)

    For as to their being aware of it, they say to Pilate, "That deceiver said," these are their words, "while He was yet alive, After three days I will rise again;" and yet we know His disciples were ignorant of this; even as they had been beforehand more void of understanding than these: wherefore also these became self-condemned.

  5. Quotes verse 27:51 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The Third Theological Oration)

    He lays down His life, but He has power to take it again; and the veil is rent, for the mysterious doors of Heaven are opened; the rocks are cleft, the dead arise. He dies, but He gives life, and by His death destroys death.
