76:1 For the Chief Musician. On stringed instruments. A Psalm by Asaph. A song. In Judah, God is known. His name is great in Israel.
76:2 His tabernacle is also in Salem. His dwelling place in Zion.
(Selah.)
76:3 There he broke the flaming arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah.
76:4 Glorious are you, and excellent, more than mountains of game.
76:5 Valiant men lie plundered, they have slept their last sleep. None of the men of war can lift their hands.
76:6 At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.
8 Σὺ φοβερὸς εἶ, καὶ τίς ἀντιστήσεταί σοι ἀπὸ τῆς ὀργῆς σου;
76:7 You, even you, are to be feared. Who can stand in your sight when you are angry?
76:8 You pronounced judgment from heaven. The earth feared, and was silent,
(Selah.)
76:9 when God arose to judgment, to save all the afflicted ones of the earth. Selah.
76:10 Surely the wrath of man praises you. The survivors of your wrath are restrained.
76:11 Make vows to Yahweh your God, and fulfill them! Let all of his neighbors bring presents to him who is to be feared.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 76.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 76:1 Augustine of Hippo, Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount (Book II, Chapters V–VI)

For, because it is said, "In Judah is God known; His name is great in Israel," we are not to understand the statement in this way, as if God were less in one place, greater in another; but there His name is great, where He is named according to the greatness of His majesty.

  2. Quotes verse 76:9 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLVII)

For, "Unto whom shall I look," saith He, "but unto him that is meek and humble, and trembleth at my words?" And, "Mine eyes are upon the meek of the earth." And, "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart." This head, instead of locks, and flowing hair, bears sacrifices acceptable to God.

  3. Quotes verse 76:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XVII — 6-8)

And what of that which we read, "God is known in Judah; His name is great in Israel"? Therefore, "I have manifested Thy name unto these men whom Thou gavest me out of the world," and who are now hearing my words: not that name of Thine whereby Thou art called God, but that whereby Thou art called my Father: …

  4. Quotes verse 76:2 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XVII — 24-26)

… be one in us:" and we are God's place, inasmuch as we are His temple; even as He, who died for us and liveth for us, also prayeth for us, that we may be one in them; because "His [dwelling] place was made in peace, and His habitation in Zion," which we are.
