1 After two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing beside the Nile,
1 Y ACONTECIÓ que pasados dos años tuvo Faraón un sueño: Parecíale que estaba junto al río;
1 At the end of two full years, Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he stood by the river.
2 when seven cows, sleek and well-fed, came up from the river and began to graze among the reeds.
2 Y que del río subían siete vacas, hermosas á la vista, y muy gordas, y pacían en el prado:
2 Behold, seven cattle came up out of the river. They were sleek and fat, and they fed in the marsh grass.
3 After them, seven other cows, sickly and thin, came up from the Nile and stood beside the well-fed cows on the bank of the river.
3 Y que otras siete vacas subían tras ellas del río, de fea vista, y enjutas de carne, y se pararon cerca de las vacas hermosas á la orilla del río:
3 Behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ugly and thin, and stood by the other cattle on the brink of the river.
4 And the cows that were sickly and thin devoured the seven sleek, well-fed cows. Then Pharaoh woke up,
4 Y que las vacas de fea vista y enjutas de carne devoraban á las siete vacas hermosas y muy gordas. Y despertó Faraón.
4 The ugly and thin cattle ate up the seven sleek and fat cattle. So Pharaoh awoke.
5 but he fell back asleep and dreamed a second time: Seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, came up on one stalk.
5 Durmióse de nuevo, y soñó la segunda vez: Que siete espigas llenas y hermosas subían de una sola caña:
5 He slept and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, healthy and good.
6 After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted, thin and scorched by the east wind.
6 Y que otras siete espigas menudas y abatidas del Solano, salían después de ellas:
6 Behold, seven heads of grain, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them.
7 And the thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven plump, ripe ones. Then Pharaoh awoke and realized it was a dream.
7 Y las siete espigas menudas devoraban á las siete espigas gruesas y llenas. Y despertó Faraón, y he aquí que era sueño.
7 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy and full ears. Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.
8 In the morning his spirit was troubled, so he summoned all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
8 Y acaeció que á la mañana estaba agitado su espíritu; y envió é hizo llamar á todos los magos de Egipto, y á todos sus sabios: y contóles Faraón sus sueños, mas no había quien á Faraón los declarase.
8 In the morning, his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt’s magicians and wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.
9 Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “Today I recall my failures.
9 Entonces el principal de los coperos habló á Faraón, diciendo: Acuérdome hoy de mis faltas:
9 Then the chief cup bearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “I remember my faults today.
10 Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he put me and the chief baker in the custody of the captain of the guard.
10 Faraón se enojó contra sus siervos, y á mí me echó á la prisión de la casa del capitán de los de la guardia, á mí y al principal de los panaderos:
10 Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, with the chief baker.
11 One night both the chief baker and I had dreams, and each dream had its own meaning.
11 Y yo y él vimos un sueño una misma noche: cada uno soñó conforme á la declaración de su sueño.
11 We dreamed a dream in one night, he and I. Each man dreamed according to the interpretation of his dream.
12 Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams and he interpreted them for us individually.
12 Y estaba allí con nosotros un mozo Hebreo, sirviente del capitán de los de la guardia; y se lo contamos, y él nos declaró nuestros sueños, y declaró á cada uno conforme á su sueño.
12 There was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams. He interpreted to each man according to his dream.
13 And it happened to us just as he had interpreted: I was restored to my position, and the other man was hanged.”
13 Y aconteció que como él nos declaró, así fué: á mí me hizo volver á mi puesto, é hizo colgar al otro.
13 As he interpreted to us, so it was. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.”
14 So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, who was quickly brought out of the dungeon. After he had shaved and changed his clothes, he went in before Pharaoh.
14 Entonces Faraón envió y llamó á José; é hiciéronle salir corriendo de la cárcel, y le cortaron el pelo, y mudaron sus vestidos, y vino á Faraón.
14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came in to Pharaoh.
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
15 Y dijo Faraón á José: Yo he tenido un sueño, y no hay quien lo declare; mas he oído decir de ti, que oyes sueños para declararlos.
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
16 “I myself cannot do it,” Joseph replied, “but God will give Pharaoh a sound answer.”
16 Y respondió José á Faraón, diciendo: No está en mí; Dios será el que responda paz á Faraón.
16 Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: “In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile,
17 Entonces Faraón dijo á José: En mi sueño parecíame que estaba á la orilla del río:
17 Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, “In my dream, behold, I stood on the brink of the river;
18 when seven cows, well-fed and sleek, came up from the river and began to graze among the reeds.
18 Y que del río subían siete vacas de gruesas carnes y hermosa apariencia, que pacían en el prado:
18 and behold, seven fat and sleek cattle came up out of the river. They fed in the marsh grass;
19 After them, seven other cows—sickly, ugly, and thin—came up. I have never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt!
19 Y que otras siete vacas subían después de ellas, flacas y de muy fea traza; tan extenuadas, que no he visto otras semejantes en toda la tierra de Egipto en fealdad:
19 and behold, seven other cattle came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for ugliness.
20 Then the thin, ugly cows devoured the seven well-fed cows that were there first.
20 Y las vacas flacas y feas devoraban á las siete primeras vacas gruesas:
20 The thin and ugly cattle ate up the first seven fat cattle;
21 When they had devoured them, however, no one could tell that they had done so; their appearance was as ugly as it had been before. Then I awoke.
21 Y entraban en sus entrañas, mas no se conocía que hubiesen entrado en ellas, porque su parecer era aún malo, como de primero. Y yo desperté.
21 and when they had eaten them up, it couldn’t be known that they had eaten them, but they were still ugly, as at the beginning. So I awoke.
22 In my dream I also saw seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, growing on a single stalk.
22 Vi también soñando, que siete espigas subían en una misma caña llenas y hermosas;
22 I saw in my dream, and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, full and good;
23 After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted—withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind.
23 Y que otras siete espigas menudas, marchitas, abatidas del Solano, subían después de ellas:
23 and behold, seven heads of grain, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them.
24 And the thin heads of grain swallowed the seven plump ones. I told this dream to the magicians, but no one could explain it to me.”
24 Y las espigas menudas devoraban á las siete espigas hermosas: y helo dicho á los magos, mas no hay quien me lo declare.
24 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads of grain. I told it to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”
25 At this, Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
25 Entonces respondió José á Faraón: El sueño de Faraón es uno mismo: Dios ha mostrado á Faraón lo que va á hacer.
25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dream of Pharaoh is one. What God is about to do he has declared to Pharaoh.
26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven ripe heads of grain are seven years. The dreams have the same meaning.
26 Las siete vacas hermosas siete años son; y las espigas hermosas son siete años: el sueño es uno mismo.
26 The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good heads of grain are seven years. The dream is one.
27 Moreover, the seven thin, ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind—they are seven years of famine.
27 También las siete vacas flacas y feas que subían tras ellas, son siete años; y las siete espigas menudas y marchitas del Solano, siete años serán de hambre.
27 The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine.
28 It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.
28 Esto es lo que respondo á Faraón. Lo que Dios va á hacer, halo mostrado á Faraón.
28 That is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.
29 Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt,
29 He aquí vienen siete años de grande hartura en toda la tierra de Egipto:
29 Behold, seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt are coming.
30 but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in the land of Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will devastate the land.
30 Y levantarse han tras ellos siete años de hambre; y toda la hartura será olvidada en la tierra de Egipto; y el hambre consumirá la tierra;
30 Seven years of famine will arise after them, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land,
31 The abundance in the land will not be remembered, since the famine that follows it will be so severe.
31 Y aquella abundancia no se echará de ver á causa del hambre siguiente, la cual será gravísima.
31 and the plenty will not be known in the land by reason of that famine which follows; for it will be very grievous.
32 Moreover, because the dream was given to Pharaoh in two versions, the matter has been decreed by God, and He will carry it out shortly.
32 Y el suceder el sueño á Faraón dos veces, significa que la cosa es firme de parte de Dios, y que Dios se apresura á hacerla.
32 The dream was doubled to Pharaoh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
33 Now, therefore, Pharaoh should look for a discerning and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt.
33 Por tanto, provéase ahora Faraón de un varón prudente y sabio, y póngalo sobre la tierra de Egipto.
33 “Now therefore let Pharaoh look for a discreet and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt.
34 Let Pharaoh take action and appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.
34 Haga [esto] Faraón, y ponga gobernadores sobre el país, y quinte la tierra de Egipto en los siete años de la hartura;
34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt’s produce in the seven plenteous years.
35 Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
35 Y junten toda la provisión de estos buenos años que vienen, y alleguen el trigo bajo la mano de Faraón para mantenimiento de las ciudades; y guárdenlo.
35 Let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and store grain under the hand of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it.
36 This food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine to come upon the land of Egypt. Then the country will not perish in the famine.”
36 Y esté aquella provisión en depósito para el país, para los siete años del hambre que serán en la tierra de Egipto; y el país no perecerá de hambre.
36 The food will be to supply the land against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Egypt; so that the land will not perish through the famine.”
37 This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his officials.
37 Y el negocio pareció bien á Faraón, y á sus siervos.
37 The thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.
38 So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, in whom the Spirit of God abides?”
38 Y dijo Faraón á sus siervos: ¿Hemos de hallar otro hombre como éste, en quien haya espíritu de Dios?
38 Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?”
39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you.
39 Y dijo Faraón á José: Pues que Dios te ha hecho saber todo esto, no hay entendido ni sabio como tú:
39 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Because God has shown you all of this, there is no one so discreet and wise as you.
40 You shall be in charge of my house, and all my people are to obey your commands. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”
40 Tú serás sobre mi casa, y por tu dicho se gobernará todo mi pueblo: solamente en el trono seré yo mayor que tú.
40 You shall be over my house. All my people will be ruled according to your word. Only in the throne I will be greater than you.”
41 Pharaoh also told Joseph, “I hereby place you over all the land of Egypt.”
41 Dijo más Faraón á José: He aquí yo te he puesto sobre toda la tierra de Egipto.
41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
42 Then Pharaoh removed the signet ring from his finger, put it on Joseph’s finger, clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed a gold chain around his neck.
42 Entonces Faraón quitó su anillo de su mano, y púsolo en la mano de José, é hízole vestir de ropas de lino finísimo, y puso un collar de oro en su cuello;
42 Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck.
43 He had Joseph ride in his second chariot, with men calling out before him, “Bow the knee!” So he placed him over all the land of Egypt.
43 E hízolo subir en su segundo carro, y pregonaron delante de él: Doblad la rodilla: y púsole sobre toda la tierra de Egipto.
43 He made him ride in the second chariot which he had. They cried before him, “Bow the knee!” He set him over all the land of Egypt.
44 And Pharaoh declared to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your permission, no one in all the land of Egypt shall lift his hand or foot.”
44 Y dijo Faraón á José: Yo Faraón; y sin ti ninguno alzará su mano ni su pie en toda la tierra de Egipto.
44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh. Without you, no man shall lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah, and he gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. And Joseph took charge of all the land of Egypt.
45 Y llamó Faraón el nombre de José, Zaphnath-paaneah; y dióle por mujer á Asenath, hija de Potipherah, sacerdote de On. Y salió José por toda la tierra de Egipto.
45 Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-Paneah. He gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
46 Now Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph left Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout the land of Egypt.
46 Y era José de edad de treinta años cuando fué presentado delante de Faraón, rey de Egipto: y salió José de delante de Faraón, y transitó por toda la tierra de Egipto.
46 Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.
47 During the seven years of abundance, the land brought forth bountifully.
47 E hizo la tierra en aquellos siete años de hartura á montones.
47 In the seven plenteous years the earth produced abundantly.
48 During those seven years, Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. In every city he laid up the food from the fields around it.
48 Y él juntó todo el mantenimiento de los siete años que fueron en la tierra de Egipto, y guardó mantenimiento en las ciudades, poniendo en cada ciudad el mantenimiento del campo de sus alrededores.
48 He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities. He stored food in each city from the fields around that city.
49 So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance, like the sand of the sea, that he stopped keeping track of it; for it was beyond measure.
49 Y acopió José trigo como arena de la mar, mucho en extremo, hasta no poderse contar, porque no tenía número.
49 Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number.
50 Before the years of famine arrived, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
50 Y nacieron á José dos hijos antes que viniese el [primer] año del hambre, los cuales le parió Asenath, hija de Potipherah, sacerdote de On.
50 To Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him.
51 Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s household.”
51 Y llamó José el nombre del primogénito Manasés; porque Dios ([dijo]) me hizo olvidar todo mi trabajo, y toda la casa de mi padre.
51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, “For”, he said, “God has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.”
52 And the second son he named Ephraim, saying, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
52 Y el nombre del segundo llamólo Ephraim; porque Dios ([dijo]) me hizo fértil en la tierra de mi aflicción.
52 The name of the second, he called Ephraim: “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
53 When the seven years of abundance in the land of Egypt came to an end,
53 Y cumpliéronse los siete años de la hartura, que hubo en la tierra de Egipto.
53 The seven years of plenty, that were in the land of Egypt, came to an end.
54 the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. And although there was famine in every country, there was food throughout the land of Egypt.
54 Y comenzaron á venir los siete años del hambre, como José había dicho: y hubo hambre en todos los países, mas en toda la tierra de Egipto había pan.
54 The seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
55 When extreme hunger came to all the land of Egypt and the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.”
55 Y cuando se sintió el hambre en toda la tierra de Egipto, el pueblo clamó á Faraón por pan. Y dijo Faraón á todos los Egipcios: Id á José, y haced lo que él os dijere.
55 When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do.”
56 When the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened up all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
56 Y el hambre estaba por toda la extensión del país. Entonces abrió José todo granero donde había, y vendía á los Egipcios; porque había crecido el hambre en la tierra de Egipto.
56 The famine was over all the surface of the earth. Joseph opened all the store houses, and sold to the Egyptians. The famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
57 And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth.
57 Y toda la tierra venía á Egipto para comprar de José, porque por toda la tierra había crecido el hambre.
57 All countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth.

How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
