1 Potom otvori usta svoja Jov i stade kleti dan svoj.
2 I progovorivši Jov reče:
9 Potamnele zvezde u sumračje njeno, čekala videlo i ne dočekala ga, i ne videla zori trepavica;
12 Zašto me prihvatiše kolena? Zašto sise, da sem?
12 ¿Por qué me previnieron las rodillas? ¿y para qué las tetas que mamase?
13 Jer bih sada ležao i počivao; spavao bih, i bio bih miran,
13 Pues que ahora yaciera yo, y reposara; durmiera, y entonces tuviera reposo,
14 S carevima i savetnicima zemaljskim, koji zidaše sebi pustoline,
14 Con los reyes y con los consejeros de la tierra, que edifican para sí los desiertos;
17 Onde bezbožnici prestaju dosađivati, i onde počivaju iznemogli,
18 I sužnji se odmaraju i ne čuju glas nastojnikov.
21 Que esperan la muerte, y ella no llega, aunque la buscan más que tesoros;
23 Čoveku, kome je put sakriven i kog je Bog zatvorio odsvuda?
26 Ne počivah niti imah mira niti se odmarah, i opet dođe strahota.
26 No he tenido paz, no me aseguré, ni me estuve reposado; vínome no obstante turbación.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 3:25 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXIII)

    And this he declared, when he said, "For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me; and that which I was afraid of is come unto me." And again, "But I wept for every helpless man, and groaned when I saw a man in distress." So because of this, nothing of what happened confounded him, none of those …
