1 I približavahu se k Njemu svi carinici i grešnici da Ga čuju.
2 I vikahu na Njega fariseji i književnici govoreći: Ovaj prima grešnike i jede s njima.
3 A On im kaza priču ovu govoreći:
5 Y hallada, la pone sobre sus hombros gozoso;
6 i došavši kući sazove prijatelje i susede govoreći im: Radujte se sa mnom: ja nađoh svoju ovcu izgubljenu.
9 I našavši sazove drugarice i susede govoreći: Radujte se sa mnom: ja nađoh dinar izgubljeni.
11 I reče: Jedan čovek imaše dva sina,
11 Y dijo: Un hombre tenía dos hijos;
12 i reče mlađi od njih ocu: Oče! Daj mi deo imanja što pripada meni. I otac im podeli imanje.
13 I potom do nekoliko dana pokupi mlađi sin sve svoje, i otide u daleku zemlju; i onamo prosu imanje svoje živeći besputno.
14 A kad potroši sve, postade velika glad u onoj zemlji, i on se nađe u nevolji.
17 A kad dođe k sebi, reče: Koliko najamnika u oca mog imaju hleba i suviše, a ja umirem od gladi!
18 Ustaću i idem ocu svom, pa ću mu reći: Oče! Sagreših Nebu i tebi,
18 Me levantaré, é iré á mi padre, y le diré: Padre, he pecado contra el cielo, y contra ti;
20 I ustavši otide ocu svom.
22 A otac reče slugama svojim: Iznesite najlepšu haljinu i obucite ga, i podajte mu prsten na ruku i obuću na noge.
23 Y traed el becerro grueso, y matadlo, y comamos, y hagamos fiesta:
24 Jer ovaj moj sin beše mrtav, i ožive; i izgubljen beše, i nađe se. I stadoše se veseliti.
25 A sin njegov stariji beše u polju, i dolazeći kad se približi kući ču pevanje i podvikivanje.
25 Y su hijo el mayor estaba en el campo; el cual como vino, y llegó cerca de casa, oyó la sinfonía y las danzas;
27 A on mu reče: Brat tvoj dođe; i otac tvoj zakla tele ugojeno, što ga je zdravog video.
28 A on se rasrdi i ne htede da uđe. Tada iziđe otac njegov i moljaše ga.
29 A on odgovarajući reče ocu: Eto te služim toliko godina, i nikad ne prestupih tvoje zapovesti, pa meni nikad nisi dao jare da bih se proveselio sa svojim društvom;
29 Mas él respondiendo, dijo al padre: He aquí tantos años te sirvo, no habiendo traspasado jamás tu mandamiento, y nunca me has dado un cabrito para gozarme con mis amigos:
31 A on mu reče: Sine! Ti si svagda sa mnom, i sve je moje tvoje.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 15:8 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XVI–XVII)

    In the same way they oracularly declare, that one power having departed also from the Duodecad, has perished; and this was represented by the woman who lost the drachma, and, lighting a lamp, again found it.

  2. Quotes verse 15:16 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book III, Chapters V–VII)

    Far, indeed, was I wandering away from Thee, being even shut out from the very husks of the swine, whom with husks I fed. For how much better, then, are the fables of the grammarians and poets than these snares!

  3. Quotes verse 15:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LIX)

    But Luke saith, that He even brought it on his shoulders, and that "There was greater joy over one sinner that repenteth, than over ninety and nine just persons." And from His forsaking those that were saved for it, and from His taking more pleasure in this one, He showed His earnestness about it to be great.

    … Christ, as yet by calling only, but ere long by grace also, make you a new heart and a new spirit, that there may be gladness among the inhabitants of heaven: for if over one sinner that repenteth there is joy, according to the Gospel, how much more shall the salvation of so many souls move the inhabitants of …

    … no repentance." And with much joyfulness do we hear, whenever we hear, how the lost sheep is brought home again on the Shepherd's shoulders, while the angels rejoice, and the drachma is restored to Thy treasury, the neighhours rejoicing with the woman who found it; and the joy of the solemn service of Thy house constraineth to tears, when in …
