2 I gle, beše pred Njim nekakav čovek na kome beše debela bolest.
3 I odgovarajući Isus reče zakonicima i farisejima govoreći: Je li slobodno u subotu isceljivati?
4 A oni oćuteše.
7 A gostima kaza priču, kad opazi kako izbirahu začelja, i reče im:
8 Kad te ko pozove na svadbu, ne sedaj u začelje, da ne bude među gostima ko stariji od tebe;
12 A i onome što ih je pozvao reče: Kad daješ obed ili večeru, ne zovi prijatelje svoje, ni braću svoju, ni rođake svoje, ni susede bogate, da ne bi i oni tebe kad pozvali i vratili ti;
13 nego kad činiš gozbu, zovi siromahe, kljaste, hrome, slepe;
13 Mas cuando haces banquete, llama á los pobres, los mancos, los cojos, los ciegos;
16 A On mu reče: Jedan čovek zgotovi veliku večeru, i pozva mnoge;
19 I drugi reče: Kupih pet jarmova volova, i idem da ih ogledam; molim te, izgovori me.
20 I treći reče: Oženih se, i zato ne mogu doći.
21 I došavši sluga taj kaza ovo gospodaru svom. Tada se rasrdi domaćin i reče sluzi svom: Idi brzo na raskršća i ulice gradske, i dovedi amo siromahe, i kljaste, i bogaljaste, i slepe.
22 I reče sluga: Gospodaru, učinio sam kako si zapovedio, i još mesta ima.
25 Iđaše pak s Njim mnoštvo naroda, i obazrevši se reče im:
30 Diciendo: Este hombre comenzó á edificar, y no pudo acabar.
34 So je dobra, ali ako so obljutavi, čim će se osoliti?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 14:16 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXII)

    Holy lessons have been set forth before us, to which we should both give ear, and upon which by the Lord's help I would deliver some observations. In the Apostolic lesson thanks are rendered unto the Lord for the faith of the Gentiles, of course, because it was His work.

  2. Quotes verse 14:27 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters III–IV)

    They then represent the Saviour as having indicated this twofold faculty: first, the sustaining power, when He said, "Whosoever doth not bear his cross (Stauros), and follow after me, cannot be my disciple;" and again, "Taking up the cross, follow me;" but the separating power when He said, "I came not to send peace, but a sword." They also maintain …

    For this reason Luke saith, "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple;" not commanding simply to hate them, since this were even quite contrary to the law; but "when one desires to be loved more …
