1 I kad se približiše k Jerusalimu i dođoše u Vitfagu k maslinskoj gori, onda Isus posla dva učenika
3 I ako vam ko reče šta, kažite da oni trebaju Gospodu: i odmah će ih poslati.
5 Kažite kćeri Sionovoj: Evo car tvoj ide tebi krotak, i jaše na magarcu, i magaretu sinu magaričinom.
6 I učenici otidoše, i učinivši kako im zapovedi Isus.
6 Y los discípulos fueron, é hicieron como Jesús les mandó;
7 Dovedoše magaricu i magare, i metnuše na njih haljine svoje, i posadiše Ga na njih.
12 Y entró Jesús en el templo de Dios, y echó fuera todos los que vendían y compraban en el templo, y trastornó las mesas de los cambiadores, y las sillas de los que vendían palomas;
14 I pristupiše k Njemu hromi i slepi u crkvi, i isceli ih.
16 I rekoše Mu: Čuješ li šta ovi govore? A Isus reče im: Da! Zar niste nikad čitali: Iz usta male dece i koja sisaju načinio si sebi hvalu?
17 I ostavivši ih izađe napolje iz grada u Vitaniju, i zanoći onde.
I odmah usahnu smokva.
20 I videvši to učenici diviše se govoreći: Kako odmah usahnu smokva!
22 I sve što uzištete u molitvi verujući, dobićete.
23 I kad dođe u crkvu i stade učiti, pristupiše k Njemu glavari sveštenički i starešine narodne govoreći: Kakvom vlasti to činiš? I ko ti dade vlast tu?
24 A Isus odgovarajući reče im: Ja ću vas upitati jednu reč, koju ako mi kažete, i ja ću vama kazati kakvom vlasti ovo činim.
27 I odgovarajući Isusu rekoše: Ne znamo. Reče i On njima: Ni ja vama neću kazati kakvom vlasti ovo činim.
27 Y respondiendo á Jesús, dijeron: No sabemos.
29 A on odgovarajući reče: Neću; a posle se raskaja i otide.
29 Y respondiendo él, dijo: No quiero; mas después, arrepentido, fué.
30 I pristupivši k drugom reče tako. A on odgovarajući reče: Hoću, gospodaru; i ne otide.
Y no fué.
33 Drugu priču čujte: Beše čovek domaćin koji posadi vinograd, i ogradi ga plotom, i iskopa u njemu pivnicu, i načini kulu, i dade ga vinogradarima i otide.
35 I vinogradari pohvatavši sluge njegove jednog izbiše, a jednog ubiše, a jednog zasuše kamenjem.
36 Opet posla druge sluge, više nego pre, i učiniše im tako isto.
41 Rekoše Mu: Zločince će zlom smrti pomoriti; a vinograd daće drugim vinogradarima, koji će mu davati rodove u svoje vreme.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 21:19 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXIX)

The lesson of the Holy Gospel which has just been read, has given us an alarming warning, lest we have leaves only, and have no fruit. That is, in few words, lest words be present and deeds be wanting. Very terrible!

  2. Commentary 21:12 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXVII)

This John likewise saith, but he in the beginning of his Gospel, this at the end. Whence it is probable this was done twice, and at different seasons. And it is evident both from the times, and from their reply. For there He came at the very passover, but here much before.

  3. Quotes verse 21:13 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Preface)

… and did truly vindicate His own house, by driving out of it the changers of money, who were buying and selling, saying unto them: "It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." And what reason had He for thus doing and saying, and vindicating His house, if …

  4. Quotes verse 21:38 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapter 19)

Indeed, the gospel parable about the wicked husbandmen shows that our Lord Jesus Himself said something like it: "This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours." In like manner also that passage in this same book, on which we have already touched when we were speaking of the barren woman who hath born …

  5. Quotes verse 21:16 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily VII)

For instance, when after many miracles children were singing hymns unto Him, hear what saith the prophet, "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings Thou hast perfected praise." And again, "I will consider the Heavens, the works of Thy fingers;" which signifies Him to be Maker of the universe.
