Notes on this text (4)
- Greek and Latin Bibles number most Psalms one lower than Hebrew and English Bibles.
- Psalms are numbered as in the Septuagint (Psalm 50 = Psalm 51 in English Bibles), with the titles counted as verses.
- The Old Testament is translated mainly from the Hebrew, with many Septuagint readings added; in this digital text those additions (and the Septuagint psalm titles) are in square brackets [ ].
- Includes the books not found in the Hebrew Bible (Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, Letter of Jeremiah, 1–3 Maccabees, 2 and 3 Esdras, Prayer of Manasseh), as in the Synodal editions.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 101.
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
The title of this Psalm is, "A Psalm of confession." The verses are few, but big with great subjects; may the seed bring forth within your hearts, the barn be prepared for the Lord's harvest. 3. "Jubilate," therefore, "unto the Lord, all ye lands" (ver. 1). This Psalm giveth this exhortation to us, that we jubilate unto the Lord.

And therefore it is written in the psalm, "I will sing of mercy and of judgment: unto Thee, O Lord, will I sing." And of this judgment He went on to say, "And hath given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man." Here He shows that He will come to judge in that flesh …

But He came first to impart mercy, that He might afterwards exercise judgment, to whom it is said, "I will sing unto Thee O Lord, of mercy and judgment." He gave then remission of sins to those who believed in Him, He would not even take account with them of past reckonings.
