1 Let men this wyse esteme vs even as the ministers of Christ and disposers of the secretes of God.
1 So let a man think of us as Christ’s servants and stewards of God’s mysteries.
2 Furthermore it is requyred of the disposers that they be founde faithfull.
2 Here, moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
3 With me is it but a very smal thinge that I shuld be iudged of you ether of (mans daye) No I iudge not myn awne selfe.
3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you, or by a human court. Yes, I don’t even judge my own self.
4 I know nought by my selfe: yet am I not therby iustified. It is the Lorde that iudgeth me.
4 For I know nothing against myself. Yet I am not justified by this, but he who judges me is the Lord.
5 Therfore iudge no thinge before the tyme vntill the Lorde come which will lighten thinges that are hyd in darcknes and open the counsels of the hertes. And then shall every man have prayse of God.
5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each man will get his praise from God.
6 These thinges brethren I have described in myn awne person and Apollos for youre sakes that ye myght learne by vs that no man counte of him selfe beyonde that which is above written: that one swell not agaynst another for eny mans cause.
6 Now these things, brothers, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that in us you might learn not to think beyond the things which are written, that none of you be puffed up against one another.
7 For who preferreth the? What hast thou that thou hast not receaved? Yf thou have receaved it why reioysest thou as though thou haddest not receaved it?
7 For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn’t receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
8 Now ye are full: now ye are made rych: ye raygne as kinges with out vs: and I wold to god ye dyd raygne that we might raygne with you.
8 You are already filled. You have already become rich. You have come to reign without us. Yes, and I wish that you did reign, that we also might reign with you!
9 Me thinketh that God hath set forth vs which are Apostles for the lowest of all as it were men appoynted to deeth. For we are a gasyngestocke vnto the worlde and to the angels and to men.
9 For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last of all, like men sentenced to death. For we are made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and men.
10 We are foles for Christes sake and ye are wyse thorow Christ. We are weake and ye are stroge. Ye are honorable and we are despised.
10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You have honor, but we have dishonor.
11 Even vnto this daye we honger and thyrst and are naked and are boffetted with fistes and have no certayne dwellinge place
11 Hasta esta hora hambreamos, y tenemos sed, y estamos desnudos, y somos heridos de golpes, y andamos vagabundos;
11 Even to this present hour we hunger, thirst, are naked, are beaten, and have no certain dwelling place.
12 and laboure workinge with oure awne hondes. We are revysed and yet we blesse. We are persecuted and suffer it.
12 We toil, working with our own hands. When people curse us, we bless. Being persecuted, we endure.
13 We are evyll spoken of and we praye. We are made as it were the filthynes of the worlde the ofscowringe of all thinges even vnto this tyme.
13 Being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, the dirt wiped off by all, even until now.
14 I write not these thinges to shame you: but as my beloved sonnes I warne you.
14 I don’t write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children.
15 For though ye have ten thousande instructours in Christ: yet have ye not many fathers. In Christ Iesu I have begotten you thorowe the gospell.
15 For though you have ten thousand tutors in Christ, you don’t have many fathers. For in Christ Jesus, I became your father through the Good News.
16 Wherfore I desyre you to folowe me.
16 Por tanto, os ruego que me imitéis.
16 I beg you therefore, be imitators of me.
17 For this cause have I sent vnto you Timotheus which is my deare sonne and faithfull in the Lorde which shall put you in remembraunce of my wayes which I have in Christ even as I teache every where in all congregacions.
17 Because of this I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, even as I teach everywhere in every assembly.
18 Some swell as though I wolde come no more at you.
18 Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you.
19 But I will come to you shortely yf God will: and will knowe not the wordes of the which swell but the power:
19 Empero iré presto á vosotros, si el Señor quisiere; y entenderé, no las palabras de los que andan hinchados, sino la virtud.
19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord is willing. And I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power.
20 for the kyngdome of God is not in wordes but in power.
20 For God’s Kingdom is not in word, but in power.
21 What will ye? Shall I come vnto you with a rodde or els in love and in the sprete of mekenes?
21 What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 4:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Corinthians (Homily XI)

Together with all other ills, I know not how, there hath come upon man's nature the disease of restless prying and of unseasonable curiosity, which Christ Himself chastised, saying, (St. Matt. vii. 1.) "Judge not, that ye be not judged." A kind of thing, which hath no pleasure as all other sins have, but only punishment and vengeance.

… not one thing in one place, and another in another; according to which Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and Moses, and David, and all those commended by the mouth of God were righteous, but were judged unrighteous by foolish men, judging out of man's judgment, and gauging by the petty standard of their own manners the manners of the whole …

  3. Quotes verse 4:4 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily VI)

… is against our will; but nevertheless it doth not escape punishment, but of it too we have to give account:--both of what we know, and of what we do not know; "For I know nothing by myself," saith one, "yet am I not hereby justified:" --both for what we have done in ignorance, and what in knowledge; "For I bear …
