Notes on this text (1)
Tyndale Tyndale New Testament (1534)
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Further more we beseche you brethren and exhorte you in the lorde Iesus that ye increace more and more euen as ye have receaved of vs how ye ought to walke and to please god.
2 Ye remember what commaundmentes we gave you in oure lorde Iesu Christ.
3 For this is the will of god even that ye shuld be holy
3 Porque la voluntad de Dios es vuestra santificación: que os apartéis de fornicación;
4 and that ye shuld abstayne from fornicacion that every one of you shuld knowe how to kepe his vessell in holynes and honoure
4 Que cada uno de vosotros sepa tener su vaso en santificación y honor;
5 and not in the lust of concupiscence as do the hethen which knowe not god
6 that noman goo to farre and defraude his brother in bargayninge: because the lorde is a venger of all suche thinges as we tolde you before tyme and testified.
7 For god hath not called vs vnto vnclennes: but vnto holynes.
8 He therfore that despiseth despiseth not man but God which hath sent his holy sprete amonge you.
9 But as touchynge brotherly love ye nede not that I wryte vnto you. For ye are taught of God to love on another.
9 Mas acerca de la caridad fraterna no habéis menester que os escriba: porque vosotros mismos habéis aprendido de Dios que os améis los unos á los otros;
10 Ye and that thinge verely ye do vnto all the brethren which are thorow oute all Macedonia. We beseche you brethren that ye encreace more and more
10 Y también lo hacéis [así] con todos los hermanos que están por toda Macedonia. Empero os rogamos, hermanos, que abundéis más;
11 and that ye studye to be quyet and to medle with youre awne busynes and to worke with youre awne hondes as we commaunded you:
11 Y que procuréis tener quietud, y hacer vuestros negocios, y obréis de vuestras manos de la manera que os hemos mandado;
12 that ye maye behave youre selves honestly towarde them that are with out and that nothinge be lackynge vnto you.
13 I wolde not brethren have you ignoraunt concerninge them which are fallen aslepe that ye sorowe not as other do which have no hope.
14 For yf we beleve that Iesus dyed and rose agayne: even so them also which slepe by IeIesus will God brynge agayne with him.
15 And this saye we vnto you in the worde of the Lorde that we which live and are remayninge in the comminge of the Lorde shall not come yerre they which slepe.
16 For the Lorde him selfe shall descende from heven with a showte and the voyce of the archangell and trompe of God. And the deed in Christe shall aryse fyrst:
16 Porque el mismo Señor con aclamación, con voz de arcángel, y con trompeta de Dios, descenderá del cielo; y los muertos en Cristo resucitarán primero:
17 then shall we which live and remayne be caught vp with them also in the cloudes to mete the Lorde in the ayer. And so shall we ever be with the Lorde.
18 Wherfore comforte youre selves one another with these wordes

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 4:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Thessalonians (Homily V)

    When he has met what was pressing, and what was upon his hands, and is about henceforth to enter upon things that are perpetual, and which they ought continually to hear, he adds this expression, "finally," that is, always and forever. "We beseech and exhort you in the Lord." Strange!

  2. Quotes verse 4:4 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIV, Chapters 14–16)

    What friend of wisdom and holy joys, who, being married, but knowing, as the apostle says, "how to possess his vessel in santification and honor, not in the disease of desire, as the Gentiles who know not God," would not prefer, if this were possi ble, to beget children without this lust, so that in this function of begetting offspring …

  3. Quotes verse 4:5 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XVIII)

    Which Paul too did, saying, "Sorrow not, even as the rest which have no hope;" and, "Even as the Gentiles which know not God." And to signify that He requires nothing very overpowering, but a little more than was accustomed, He saith, "Do not even the Gentiles the same?" Yet nevertheless He stops not the discourse at this, but makes …

  4. Quotes verse 4:17 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XIV)

    … watch over your souls; keep unshaken and unchanged your hope in Him who rose again; raise you together with Him from your dead sins unto His heavenly gift; count you worthy to be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, in His fitting time; and, until that time arrive of His glorious second advent, …

  5. Quotes verse 4:17 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters XXVIII–XXIX)

    It is yours according to your merit to be "ever with the Lord," and you expect to be caught up "in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and to be ever with the Lord." You declare the man who numbers and ranks the Spirit with the Father and the Son to be guilty of intolerable impiety.
