1 Me llegó otro mensaje del Señor, que decía:
1 Y FUÉ á mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:
1 Again Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
2 “Hijo de hombre, desafía a Jerusalén por sus prácticas repugnantes.
2 Hijo del hombre, notifica á Jerusalem sus abominaciones,
2 “Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations;
3 Dile a Jerusalén que esto es lo que el Señor Dios le dice: Realmente eres cananea, tanto por tu nacimiento como por tu parentesco. Tu padre era amorreo y tu madre era hitita.
3 Y di: Así ha dicho el Señor Jehová sobre Jerusalem: Tu habitación y tu raza fué de la tierra de Canaán; tu padre Amorrheo, y tu madre Hethea.
3 and say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says to Jerusalem: “Your origin and your birth is of the land of the Canaanite. An Amorite was your father, and your mother was a Hittite.
4 El día que naciste no te cortaron el cordón umbilical, ni te lavaron para limpiarte, ni te frotaron con sal, ni te envolvieron en paños.
4 Y cuanto á tu nacimiento, el día que naciste no fué cortado tu ombligo, ni fuiste lavada con aguas para atemperarte, ni salada con sal, ni fuiste envuelta con fajas.
4 As for your birth, in the day you were born your navel was not cut. You weren’t washed in water to cleanse you. You weren’t salted at all, nor wrapped in blankets at all.
5 Nadie te miró con amor para hacer algo así por ti; nadie mostró ningún tipo de cuidado por ti. No, sino que fuiste arrojado a un campo, abandonado y despreciado desde el día en que naciste.
5 No hubo ojo que se compadeciese de ti, para hacerte algo de esto, teniendo de ti misericordia; sino que fuiste echada sobre la haz del campo, con menosprecio de tu vida, en el día que naciste.
5 No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you, to have compassion on you; but you were cast out in the open field, because you were abhorred in the day that you were born.
6 “Pero pasé por allí y te vi dando patadas, cubierto en tu propia sangre. Mientras yacías allí, cubierto de sangre, te dije: ‘¡Quiero que vivas!’ Allí mismo te dije: ‘¡Quiero que vivas!’
6 Y yo pasé junto á ti, y te vi sucia en tus sangres, y díjete: En tus sangres, vive; vive, díjete, en tus sangres.
6 “‘“When I passed by you, and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you, ‘Though you are in your blood, live!’ Yes, I said to you, ‘Though you are in your blood, live!’
7 Te ayudé a crecer como una planta en el campo. Creciste hasta convertirte en una hermosa joven. Tus pechos se desarrollaron y el vello de tu cuerpo creció, y estabas completamente desnuda.
7 En millares como la hierba del campo te puse, y fuiste aumentada y engrandecida, y viniste á ser adornada grandemente; los pechos te crecieron, y tu pelo brotó; mas tú estabas desnuda y descubierta.
7 I caused you to multiply as that which grows in the field, and you increased and grew great, and you attained to excellent beauty. Your breasts were formed, and your hair grew; yet you were naked and bare.
8 “Cuando volví a pasar por allí, te miré y vi que estabas en edad de hacer el amor. Así que extendí mi manto sobre ti y cubrí tu cuerpo desnudo. Me comprometí contigo e hice un acuerdo solemne contigo, y te hice mía, declara el Señor Dios.
8 Y pasé yo junto á ti, y te miré, y he aquí que tu tiempo era tiempo de amores; y extendí mi manto sobre ti, y cubrí tu desnudez; y díte juramento, y entré en concierto contigo, dice el Señor Jehová, y fuiste mía:
8 “‘“Now when I passed by you, and looked at you, behold, your time was the time of love; and I spread my garment over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I pledged myself to you and entered into a covenant with you,” says the Lord Yahweh, “and you became mine.
9 Luego te lavé con agua, limpié tu sangre y te ungí con aceite.
9 Y te lavé con agua, y lavé tus sangres de encima de ti, y ungíte con aceite;
9 “‘“Then I washed you with water. Yes, I thoroughly washed away your blood from you, and I anointed you with oil.
10 Te puse un vestido bellamente bordado y te di sandalias de cuero fino. Te vestí de lino fino y te cubrí de seda.
10 Y te vestí de bordado, y te calcé de tejón, y ceñíte de lino, y te vestí de seda.
10 I clothed you also with embroidered work and put leather sandals on you. I dressed you with fine linen and covered you with silk.
11 Te regalé joyas: te puse brazaletes en las muñecas y un collar en el cuello.
11 Y te atavíe con ornamentos, y puse ajorcas en tus brazos, y collar á tu cuello;
11 I decked you with ornaments, put bracelets on your hands, and put a chain on your neck.
12 Te puse un anillo en la nariz y aretes en las orejas, y coloqué una hermosa corona en tu cabeza.
12 Y puse joyas sobre tus narices, y zarcillos en tus orejas, y diadema de hermosura en tu cabeza.
12 I put a ring on your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.
13 “Llevabas joyas de oro y plata, y tus ropas eran de lino fino, de telas costosas y de telas bordadas. Comiste pan hecho con la mejor harina, y miel y aceite de oliva. Te embelleciste aún más y te convertiste en una reina.
13 Y fuiste adornada de oro y de plata, y tu vestido fué lino, y seda, y bordado; comiste flor de harina de trigo, y miel, y aceite; y fuiste hermoseada en extremo, y has prosperado hasta reinar.
13 Thus you were decked with gold and silver. Your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered work. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil. You were exceedingly beautiful, and you prospered to royal estate.
14 Fuiste famosa en todo el mundo por tu belleza, porque usé mi poder majestuoso para hacerte tan maravillosa, declara el Señor Dios.
14 Y salióte nombradía entre las gentes á causa de tu hermosura; porque era perfecta, á causa de mi hermosura que yo puse sobre ti, dice el Señor Jehová.
14 Your renown went out among the nations for your beauty; for it was perfect, through my majesty which I had put on you,” says the Lord Yahweh.
15 “Estabas tan orgullosa de tu belleza que me fuiste infiel. Pensaste que por ser tan famosa podías prostituirte y acostarte con cualquiera que pasara por allí. Tomaron para sí tu hermoso cuerpo.
15 Mas confiaste en tu hermosura, y fornicaste á causa de tu nombradía, y derramaste tus fornicaciones á cuantos pasaron; suya eras.
15 “‘“But you trusted in your beauty, and played the prostitute because of your renown, and poured out your prostitution on everyone who passed by. It was his.
16 Te hiciste santuarios paganos de colores con la ropa que te había dado, y allí actuaste como una prostituta. Cosas así nunca habían sucedido antes, ¡y no deben suceder en el futuro!
16 Y tomaste de tus vestidos, é hicístete diversos altos lugares, y fornicaste en ellos: [cosa semejante] no vendrá, ni será [así].
16 You took some of your garments, and made for yourselves high places decked with various colors, and played the prostitute on them. This shouldn’t happen, neither shall it be.
17 “También usaste las hermosas joyas de oro y plata que te di para hacer ídolos masculinos y te prostituiste con ellas.
17 Tomaste asimismo los vasos de tu hermosura de mi oro y de mi plata, que yo te había dado, é hicístete imágenes de hombre, y fornicaste con ellas.
17 You also took your beautiful jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself images of men, and played the prostitute with them.
18 Usaste tus ropas bordadas para vestirlos, y colocaste ante ellos mi aceite de oliva y mi incienso.
18 Y tomaste tus vestidos de diversos colores, y cubrístelas; y mi aceite y mi perfume pusiste delante de ellas.
18 You took your embroidered garments, covered them, and set my oil and my incense before them.
19 Presentaste la comida que te había dado como ofrenda para que la aceptaran -panes hechos con la mejor harina, aceite de oliva y miel que yo te había proporcionado para comer. Eso es exactamente lo que hiciste, declara el Señor Dios.
19 Mi pan también, que yo te había dado, la flor de la harina, y el aceite, y la miel, con que yo te mantuve, pusiste delante de ellas para olor suave; y fué [así], dice el Señor Jehová.
19 My bread also which I gave you, fine flour, oil, and honey, with which I fed you, you even set it before them for a pleasant aroma; and so it was,” says the Lord Yahweh.
20 “Sacrificaste a tus hijos e hijas – los hijos que tuviste para mí – ofreciéndolos como alimento para que los comieran los ídolos. ¿No fue suficiente tu prostitución?
20 Demás de esto, tomaste tus hijos y tus hijas que me habías engendrado, y los sacrificaste á ellas para consumación. ¿Es poco, [esto] de tus fornicaciones?
20 “‘“Moreover you have taken your sons and your daughters, whom you have borne to me, and you have sacrificed these to them to be devoured. Was your prostitution a small matter,
21 Sacrificaste a mis hijos, los sacrificaste a los ídolos.
21 Y sacrificaste mis hijos, y dístelos á ellas para que los hiciesen pasar [por el fuego].
21 that you have slain my children and delivered them up, in causing them to pass through the fire to them?
22 “Mientras estabas ocupada en todas tus prácticas repugnantes y en tu prostitución, te olvidaste del tiempo en que eras joven, completamente desnuda y yacías pateando en tu propia sangre.
22 Y con todas tus abominaciones y tus fornicaciones no te has acordado de los días de tu mocedad, cuando estabas desnuda y descubierta, cuando estabas envuelta en tu sangre.
22 In all your abominations and your prostitution you have not remembered the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, and were wallowing in your blood.
23 “¡Viene el desastre! El desastre viene sobre ti, declara el Señor Dios. Además de todas las cosas malas que hiciste,
23 Y fué que después de toda tu maldad (¡ay, ay de ti! dice el Señor Jehová,)
23 “‘“It has happened after all your wickedness—woe, woe to you!” says the Lord Yahweh—
24 te construiste un santuario pagano, un altar de cultoa losídolos en todas las plazas de la ciudad.
24 Edificástete alto, y te hiciste altar en todas las plazas:
24 “that you have built for yourselves a vaulted place, and have made yourselves a lofty place in every street.
25 Te convertiste en lugares altos de adoración de ídolos en lo alto de cada calle; te degradaste, ofreciendo tu hermoso cuerpo a cualquiera que pasara, abriendo tus piernas para ellos, volviéndote cada vez más promiscua.
25 En toda cabeza de camino edificaste tu altar, y tornaste abominable tu hermosura, y abriste tus piernas á cuantos pasaban, y multiplicaste tus fornicaciones.
25 You have built your lofty place at the head of every way, and have made your beauty an abomination, and have opened your feet to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your prostitution.
26 Te ofreciste como prostituta a tus vecinos egipcios con sus grandes órganos sexuales, haciéndome enojar porque te volviste aún más promiscua.
26 Y fornicaste con los hijos de Egipto, tus vecinos, de grandes carnes; y aumentaste tus fornicaciones para enojarme.
26 You have also committed sexual immorality with the Egyptians, your neighbors, great of flesh; and have multiplied your prostitution, to provoke me to anger.
27 “Así que actué para reducir mis bendiciones parati. Dejé que tus enemigos los filisteos hicieran lo que quisieran contigo. Incluso ellos se avergonzaron de tu inmoralidad.
27 Por tanto, he aquí [que yo] extendí sobre ti mi mano, y disminuí tu provisión ordinaria, y te entregué á la voluntad de las hijas de los Filisteos que te aborrecen, las cuales se avergüenzan de tu camino deshonesto.
27 See therefore, I have stretched out my hand over you, and have diminished your portion, and delivered you to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your lewd way.
28 Como no estabas satisfecha, te prostituiste con los asirios. Pero ni siquiera entonces quedaste satisfecha.
28 Fornicaste también con los hijos de Assur por no haberte hartado; y fornicaste con ellos, y tampoco te hartaste.
28 You have played the prostitute also with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable; yes, you have played the prostitute with them, and yet you weren’t satisfied.
29 Entonces llevaste tu conducta promiscua a Babilonia, el país de los mercaderes, ¡pero ni siquiera entonces quedaste satisfecha!
29 Multiplicaste asimismo tu fornicación en la tierra de Canaán y de los Caldeos: ni tampoco con esto te hartaste.
29 You have moreover multiplied your prostitution to the land of merchants, to Chaldea; and yet you weren’t satisfied with this.
30 “Realmente eres una mente enferma al hacer todo esto, actuando como una prostituta sin vergüenza, declara el Señor Dios.
30 ¡Cuán inconstante es tu corazón, dice el Señor Jehová, habiendo hecho todas estas cosas, obras de una poderosa ramera,
30 “‘“How weak is your heart,” says the Lord Yahweh, “since you do all these things, the work of an impudent prostitute;
31 En realidad, ni siquiera eras una prostituta normal cuando te construiste santuarios paganos en lo alto de cada calle y altos lugares de culto a los ídolos en cada plaza pública, ¡porque te negaste a que te pagaran por tus servicios!
31 Edificando tus altares en cabeza de todo camino, y haciendo tus altares en todas las plazas! Y no fuiste semejante á ramera, menospreciando el salario,
31 in that you build your vaulted place at the head of every way, and make your lofty place in every street, and have not been as a prostitute, in that you scorn pay.
32 “¡Eres una esposa que ama el adulterio! ¡Te acuestas con extraños y no con tu propio marido!
32 [Sino como] mujer adúltera, por cuanto [que] en lugar de su marido recibe á ajenos.
32 “‘“Adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband!
33 Normalmente todas las prostitutas reciben pago, pero tú eras la que les daba regalos a todos tus amantes. Incluso los sobornaste para que vinieran de todas partes y tuvieran relaciones sexuales contigo.
33 A todas las rameras dan dones; mas tú diste tus dones á todos tus enamorados; y les diste presentes, porque entrasen á ti de todas partes por tus fornicaciones.
33 People give gifts to all prostitutes; but you give your gifts to all your lovers, and bribe them, that they may come to you on every side for your prostitution.
34 Así que eres lo contrario de las demás prostitutas. Nadie viene a ti pidiendo sexo, y tú pagas la cuota de la prostituta en lugar de recibirla. Eres todo lo contrario.
34 Y ha sido en ti al contrario de las mujeres en tus fornicaciones, ni nunca después de [ti será así] fornicado; porque en dar tú dones, y no ser dados dones á ti, ha sido al contrario.
34 You are different from other women in your prostitution, in that no one follows you to play the prostitute; and whereas you give hire, and no hire is given to you, therefore you are different.”’
35 “Así que, prostituta, ¡escucha el mensaje del Señor!
35 Por tanto, ramera, oye palabra de Jehová:
35 “Therefore, prostitute, hear Yahweh’s word:
36 Esto es lo que dice el Señor: Como estabas tan loca de deseo que te desnudaste y cometiste adulterio con tus amantes y con todos tus asquerosos ídolos, y como mataste a tus hijos como sacrificios a esos ídolos,
36 Así ha dicho el Señor Jehová: Por cuanto han sido descubiertas tus vergüenzas, y tu confusión ha sido manifestada á tus enamorados en tus fornicaciones, y á los ídolos de tus abominaciones, y en la sangre de tus hijos, los cuales les diste;
36 ‘The Lord Yahweh says, “Because your filthiness was poured out, and your nakedness uncovered through your prostitution with your lovers; and because of all the idols of your abominations, and for the blood of your children, that you gave to them;
37 voy a reunir a todos los amantes con los que te acostaste, tanto si los amabas como si los odiabas, y haré que se reúnan de todas partes y te desnudaré mientras miran para que te vean totalmente desnuda.
37 Por tanto, he aquí que yo junto todos tus enamorados con los cuales tomaste placer, y todos los que amaste, con todos los que aborreciste; y reunirélos contra ti alrededor, y descubriréles tu vergüenza, y verán toda tu torpeza.
37 therefore see, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you have taken pleasure, and all those whom you have loved, with all those whom you have hated. I will even gather them against you on every side, and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.
38 Te impondré el castigo de las mujeres que cometen adulterio y de las que asesinan; serás castigada con ira apasionada.
38 Y yo te juzgaré por las leyes de las adúlteras, y de las que derraman sangre; y te daré en sangre de ira y de celo.
38 I will judge you as women who break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will bring on you the blood of wrath and jealousy.
39 “Luego te entregaré a tus amantes, y ellos demolerán tus santuarios paganos y destruirán tus lugares altos de adoración de ídolos. “Te despojarán de tus ropas, te quitarán tus hermosas joyas y te dejarán completamente desnuda.
39 Y te entregaré en mano de ellos: y destruirán tu alto, y derribarán tus altares, y te harán desnudar de tus ropas, y se llevarán los vasos de tu gloria, y te dejarán desnuda y descubierta.
39 I will also give you into their hand, and they will throw down your vaulted place, and break down your lofty places. They will strip you of your clothes and take your beautiful jewels. They will leave you naked and bare.
40 Vendrán con una turba a atacarte. Te apedrearán y te cortarán en pedazos con sus espadas.
40 Y harán subir contra ti reunión [de gente], y te apedrearán con piedras, y te atravesarán con sus espadas.
40 They will also bring up a company against you, and they will stone you with stones, and thrust you through with their swords.
41 Quemarán sus casas y los castigarán mientras muchas mujeres lo observan. “Detendré tu prostitución, y no volverás a pagar a tus amantes.
41 Y quemarán tus casas á fuego, y harán en ti juicios á ojos de muchas mujeres; y hacerte he cesar de ser ramera, ni tampoco darás más don.
41 They will burn your houses with fire, and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. I will cause you to cease from playing the prostitute, and you will also give no hire any more.
42 Entonces dejaré de estar celoso y furioso contigo. Me calmaré y no me enfadaré más.
42 Y haré reposar mi ira sobre ti, y apartaráse de ti mi celo, y descansaré de más enojarme.
42 So I will cause my wrath toward you to rest, and my jealousy will depart from you. I will be quiet, and will not be angry any more.
43 “Como no te acordaste de cómo te cuidé cuando eras joven, sino que me hiciste enojar con todas las cosas que hiciste, me aseguraré de que sufras las consecuencias de lo que has hecho, declara el Señor Dios. Porque esta inmoralidad se sumó a todas las demás cosas repugnantes que hiciste, ¿no lo crees?
43 Por cuanto no te acordaste de los días de tu mocedad, y me provocaste á ira en todo esto, por eso, he aquí yo también he tornado tu camino sobre tu cabeza, dice el Señor Jehová; pues ni aun has pensado sobre todas tus abominaciones.
43 “‘“Because you have not remembered the days of your youth, but have raged against me in all these things; therefore, behold, I also will bring your way on your head,” says the Lord Yahweh: “and you shall not commit this lewdness with all your abominations.
44 “Todos los que gustan de usar proverbios citarán éste sobre ti: “‘De tal palo, tal astilla’.
44 He aquí que todo proverbista hará de ti proverbio, diciendo: Como la madre, tal su hija.
44 “‘“Behold, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb against you, saying, ‘As is the mother, so is her daughter.’
45 “Tú eres la hija de tu madre, que detestaba a su marido y a sus hijos. Eres igual que ella. Eres la hermana de tus hermanas, igual que ellas, que detestaban a sus maridos e hijos. De hecho, tu madre era hitita y tu padre era amorreo.
45 Hija de tu madre eres tú, que desechó á su marido y á sus hijos; y hermana de tus hermanas eres tú, que desecharon á sus maridos y á sus hijos: vuestra madre fué Hethea, y vuestro padre Amorrheo.
45 You are the daughter of your mother, who loathes her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite.
46 Tu hermana mayor era Samaria, que vivía al norte de ti con sus hijas. Tu hermana menor era Sodoma, que vivía al sur de ti con sus hijas.
46 Y tu hermana mayor es Samaria con su hijas, la cual habita á tu mano izquierda; y tu hermana la menor que tú [es] Sodoma con sus hijas, la cual habita á tu mano derecha.
46 Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells at your left hand, she and her daughters; and your younger sister, who dwells at your right hand, is Sodom with her daughters.
47 Tú no te limitaste a seguir sus caminos y a hacer las mismas cosas repugnantes que ellas, sino que muy pronto te volviste aún peor que ellas.
47 Y aun no anduviste en sus caminos, ni hiciste según sus abominaciones; antes, como [si esto fuera] poco y muy poco, te corrompiste más que ellas en todos tus caminos.
47 Yet you have not walked in their ways, nor done their abominations; but soon you were more corrupt than they in all your ways.
48 “Vivo yo, declara el Señor Dios, que tu hermana Sodoma y sus hijas nunca hicieron lo que tú y tus hijas han hecho.
48 Vivo yo, dice el Señor Jehová, Sodoma tu hermana, con sus hijas, no ha hecho como hiciste tú y tus hijas.
48 As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters.
49 Los pecados de tu hermana Sodoma fueron estos: Ella y sus hijas eran orgullosas, codiciosas y perezosas. No ayudaron a los pobres ni a los necesitados.
49 He aquí que esta fué la maldad de Sodoma tu hermana: soberbia, hartura de pan, y abundancia de ociosidad tuvo ella y sus hijas; y no corroboró la mano del afligido y del menesteroso.
49 “‘“Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters. She also didn’t strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50 Se volvieron arrogantes e hicieron cosas repugnantes en mi presencia. Así que me deshice de ellas cuando vi esto.
50 Y ensoberbeciéronse, é hicieron abominación delante de mí, y quitélas como vi [bueno].
50 They were arrogant and committed abomination before me. Therefore I took them away when I saw it.
51 “Samaria no pecó ni la mitad de lo que ustedes hicieron. Tú has hecho cosas mucho más repugnantes que ellos. De hecho, ¡todas las cosas repugnantes que has hecho hacen que tus hermanas se vean bien!
51 Y Samaria no cometió ni la mitad de tus pecados; porque tú multiplicaste tus abominaciones más que ellas, y has justificado á tus hermanas con todas tus abominaciones que hiciste.
51 Samaria hasn’t committed half of your sins; but you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and have justified your sisters by all your abominations which you have done.
52 Ahora vas a tener que soportar tu vergüenza, ya que con tus vergonzosos pecados las hiciste parecer mucho mejores. En comparación con ustedes, ellas se ven bien. Ahora tú también tendrás que soportar tu vergüenza y tu deshonra, ya que con tus pecados vergonzosos hiciste que tus hermanas parecieran buenas.
52 Tú también, que juzgaste á tus hermanas, lleva tu vergüenza en tus pecados que hiciste más abominables que ellas: más justas son que tú: avergüénzate pues tú también, y lleva tu confusión, pues que has justificado á tus hermanas.
52 You also bear your own shame yourself, in that you have given judgment for your sisters; through your sins that you have committed more abominable than they, they are more righteous than you. Yes, be also confounded, and bear your shame, in that you have justified your sisters.
53 “Aun así, voy a hacer que Sodoma y sus hijas vuelvan del destierro, y Samaria y sus hijas también. Te volveré a juntar con ellas.
53 Yo pues haré tornar sus cautivos, los cautivos de Sodoma y de sus hijas, y los cautivos de Samaria y de sus hijas, y los cautivos de tus cautiverios entre ellas,
53 “‘“I will reverse their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, and the captivity of your captives among them;
54 Así tendrás que soportar tu desgracia y avergonzarte de todas las cosas malas que hiciste para que ellas se sintieran mejor.
54 Para que tú lleves tu confusión, y te avergüences de todo lo que has hecho, siéndoles tú motivo de consuelo.
54 that you may bear your own shame, and may be ashamed because of all that you have done, in that you are a comfort to them.

60 Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.
61 Entonces recordarás la forma en que debes vivir y te avergonzarás cuando conozcas a tus hermanas mayores y menores cuando regresen a ti. Te las daré como hijas, aunque esto no era parte de nuestro acuerdo original.

How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
The prophet says to those very Jews, "Thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother a Hittite." The Amorites were not a nation that gave origin to the Jews.

With this law of condemnation, Ezekiel too was acquainted: wherefore also he said to Jerusalem, "Thou hast justified thy sisters in all thy sins." Thus everywhere is He wont to linger in the Old Testament, as in a favored place.
