VUL Clementine Vulgate
PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Utinam sustineretis modicum quid insipientiæ meæ, sed et supportare me:
2 æmulor enim vos Dei æmulatione. Despondi enim vos uni viro, virginem castam exhibere Christo.
5 Existimo enim nihil me minus fecisse a magnis Apostolis.
7 Aut numquid peccatum feci, meipsum humilians, ut vos exaltemini? quoniam gratis Evangelium Dei evangelizavi vobis?
7 Ἢ ἁμαρτίαν ἐποίησα ἐμαυτὸν ταπεινῶν ἵνα ὑμεῖς ὑψωθῆτε, ὅτι δωρεὰν τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εὐαγγέλιον εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν;
8 Alias ecclesias expoliavi, accipiens stipendium ad ministerium vestrum.
9 Et cum essem apud vos, et egerem, nulli onerosus fui: nam quod mihi deerat, suppleverunt fratres, qui venerunt a Macedonia: et in omnibus sine onere me vobis servavi, et servabo.
10 Est veritas Christi in me, quoniam hæc gloriatio non infringetur in me in regionibus Achaiæ.
11 Quare? quia non diligo vos? Deus scit.
13 Nam ejusmodi pseudoapostoli sunt operarii subdoli, transfigurantes se in apostolos Christi.
16 Iterum dico (ne quis me putet insipientem esse, alioquin velut insipientem accipite me, ut et ego modicum quid glorier),
18 Quoniam multi gloriantur secundum carnem: et ego gloriabor.
21 Secundum ignobilitatem dico, quasi nos infirmi fuerimus in hac parte. In quo quis audet (in insipientia dico) audeo et ego:
23 Ministri Christi sunt (ut minus sapiens dico), plus ego: in laboribus plurimis, in carceribus abundantius, in plagis supra modum, in mortibus frequenter.
24 A Judæis quinquies, quadragenas, una minus, accepi.
25 Ter virgis cæsus sum, semel lapidatus sum: ter naufragium feci, nocte et die in profundo maris fui,
26 in itineribus sæpe, periculis fluminum, periculis latronum, periculis ex genere, periculis ex gentibus, periculis in civitate, periculis in solitudine, periculis in mari, periculis in falsis fratribus:
27 in labore et ærumna, in vigiliis multis, in fame et siti, in jejuniis multis, in frigore et nuditate,
28 præter illa quæ extrinsecus sunt, instantia mea quotidiana, sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum.
29 τίς ἀσθενεῖ, καὶ οὐκ ἀσθενῶ; τίς σκανδαλίζεται, καὶ οὐκ ἐγὼ πυροῦμαι;
32 Damasci præpositus gentis Aretæ regis custodiebat civitatem Damascenorum ut me comprehenderet:

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 11:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Corinthians (Homily XXIII)

Being about to enter upon his own praises he uses much previous correction. And he does this not once or twice, although the necessity of the subject, and what he had often said, were sufficient excuse for him.

  2. Quotes verse 11:14 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book X, Chapters XLI–XLIII)

For the devil it was, transforming himself into an angel of light. And he much allured proud flesh, in that he had no fleshly body.

  3. Quotes verse 11:12 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXII)

Wherefore Paul also said, "That wherein they glory, they may be found even as we." But if when we are in a strange country, and are going unto persons unknown to us, we must seek nothing more than our food for the day, much more when abiding at home.

  4. Quotes verse 11:14 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IV)

The devil also transfigures himself into an angel of light; not that he may reascend to where he was, for having made his heart hard as an anvil, he has henceforth a will that cannot repent; but in order that he may envelope those who are living an Angelic life in a mist of blindness, and a pestilent condition …

  5. Quotes verse 11:3 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XII–XV)

… not in his own voice, doth he call on that other deep, for whom being jealous he feareth, lest that, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so their minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in our Bridegroom, Thine only Son. What a light of beauty will that be when "we shall see Him as He …
