WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Canticum graduum. [Levavi oculos meos in montes, unde veniet auxilium mihi.
121:1 A Song of Ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?
121:2 My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.
121:3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.
121:4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 Dominus custodit te; Dominus protectio tua super manum dexteram tuam.
121:5 Yahweh is your keeper. Yahweh is your shade on your right hand.
121:6 The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
7 Dominus custodit te ab omni malo; custodiat animam tuam Dominus.
121:7 Yahweh will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul.
121:8 Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 121.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXX)

The Psalm which we have just heard chanted, and have responded to with our voices, is short, and very profitable. Ye will not long toil in hearing, nor will ye toil fruitlessly in working. For it is, according to the title prefixed to it, "A song of degrees." Degrees are either of ascent or of descent.

Thou never ceasest to pluck them out, but I, constantly remain fast in the snares set all around me; because Thou "that keepest Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep."

  4. Quotes verse 121:4 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LV)

"Except the Lord keep the city, he that keepeth it waketh but in vain." And what "city"? "He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep." What is Israel, but the seed of Abraham?

  5. Quotes verse 121:4 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter VIII — 48-59)

He knew that He was our keeper. For "He that keepeth Israel neither slumbereth nor sleepeth;" and, "Except the Lord keep the city, they wake in vain who keep it." He then is our Keeper who is our Creator.
