VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Psalmus David, filiorum Jonadab, et priorum captivorum. [In te, Domine, speravi; non confundar in æternum.
71:1 In you, Yahweh, I take refuge. Never let me be disappointed.
2 In justitia tua libera me, et eripe me: inclina ad me aurem tuam, et salva me.
71:2 Deliver me in your righteousness, and rescue me. Turn your ear to me, and save me.
3 Esto mihi in Deum protectorem, et in locum munitum, ut salvum me facias: quoniam firmamentum meum et refugium meum es tu.
71:3 Be to me a rock of refuge to which I may always go. Give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.
71:4 Rescue me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
5 quoniam tu es patientia mea, Domine; Domine, spes mea a juventute mea.
71:5 For you are my hope, Lord Yahweh, my confidence from my youth.
71:6 I have relied on you from the womb. You are he who took me out of my mother’s womb. I will always praise you.
7 Tamquam prodigium factus sum multis; et tu adjutor fortis.
71:7 I am a marvel to many, but you are my strong refuge.
8 Repleatur os meum laude, ut cantem gloriam tuam, tota die magnitudinem tuam.
71:8 My mouth shall be filled with your praise, with your honor all day long.
9 Ne projicias me in tempore senectutis; cum defecerit virtus mea, ne derelinquas me.
71:9 Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails.
10 Quia dixerunt inimici mei mihi, et qui custodiebant animam meam consilium fecerunt in unum,
71:10 For my enemies talk about me. Those who watch for my soul conspire together,
71:11 saying, “God has forsaken him. Pursue and take him, for no one will rescue him.”
12 Deus, ne elongeris a me; Deus meus, in auxilium meum respice.
71:12 God, don’t be far from me. My God, hurry to help me.
71:13 Let my accusers be disappointed and consumed. Let them be covered with disgrace and scorn who want to harm me.
71:14 But I will always hope, and will add to all of your praise.
15 Os meum annuntiabit justitiam tuam, tota die salutare tuum. Quoniam non cognovi litteraturam,
71:15 My mouth will tell about your righteousness, and of your salvation all day, though I don’t know its full measure.
16 introibo in potentias Domini; Domine, memorabor justitiæ tuæ solius.
71:16 I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord Yahweh. I will make mention of your righteousness, even of yours alone.
17 Deus, docuisti me a juventute mea; et usque nunc pronuntiabo mirabilia tua.
71:17 God, you have taught me from my youth. Until now, I have declared your wondrous works.
18 Et usque in senectam et senium, Deus, ne derelinquas me, donec annuntiem brachium tuum generationi omni quæ ventura est, potentiam tuam,
71:18 Yes, even when I am old and gray-haired, God, don’t forsake me, until I have declared your strength to the next generation, your might to everyone who is to come.
19 et justitiam tuam, Deus, usque in altissima; quæ fecisti magnalia, Deus: quis similis tibi?
71:19 God, your righteousness also reaches to the heavens. You have done great things. God, who is like you?
20 Quantas ostendisti mihi tribulationes multas et malas ! et conversus vivificasti me, et de abyssis terræ iterum reduxisti me.
71:20 You, who have shown us many and bitter troubles, you will let me live. You will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.
21 Multiplicasti magnificentiam tuam; et conversus consolatus es me.
71:21 Increase my honor and comfort me again.
22 Nam et ego confitebor tibi in vasis psalmi veritatem tuam, Deus; psallam tibi in cithara, sanctus Israël.
71:22 I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, my God. I sing praises to you with the lyre, Holy One of Israel.
71:23 My lips shall shout for joy! My soul, which you have redeemed, sings praises to you!
71:24 My tongue will also talk about your righteousness all day long, for they are disappointed, and they are confounded, who want to harm me.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 71.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXX)

Thanks to the "Corn of wheat," because He willed to die and to be multiplied: thanks to the only Son of God, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who disdained not to undergo our death, in order that He might make us worthy of His life.

  3. Quotes verse 71:3 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters XXV–XXVI)

Accordingly we find the Psalmist, even in reference to God, saying "Be Thou to me a champion God and a strong place to save me" and concerning the Spirit "behold there is place by me, and stand upon a rock." Plainly meaning the place or contemplation in the Spirit wherein, after Moses had entered thither, he was able to see …
