1 Balaam dijo a Balac: «Constrúyeme aquí siete altares y prepara siete becerros y siete carneros».
1 Balaam said to Balak, “Build here seven altars for me, and prepare here seven bulls and seven rams for me.”
2 Balac hizo lo que Balaam le pidió, y los dos ofrecieron un becerro y un carnero sobre cada altar.
2 Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bull and a ram.
3 Entonces Balaam dijo a Balac: «Quédate aquí junto a tu holocausto mientras yo voy aparte. Tal vez el Señor venga a mi encuentro. Te diré todo lo que él me muestre». Y Balaam subió a una altura sin vegetación.
3 Balaam said to Balak, “Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps Yahweh will come to meet me. Whatever he shows me I will tell you.” He went to a bare height.
4 Dios se encontró con Balaam, y Balaam le dijo: «He preparado siete altares y he ofrecido un becerro y un carnero sobre cada altar».
4 God met Balaam, and he said to him, “I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.”
5 El Señor puso un mensaje en la boca de Balaam y le dijo: «Vuelve a Balac y dale este mensaje».
5 Yahweh put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.”
6 Balaam regresó y encontró a Balac junto a su holocausto con todos los jefes de Moab.
6 He returned to him, and behold, he was standing by his burnt offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.
7 Entonces Balaam pronunció este mensaje: «Balac me trajo desde Aram, el rey de Moab me hizo venir desde las montañas del este. Me dijo: “Ven, maldice a Jacob por mí. Ven, anuncia el mal contra Israel”.
7 He took up his parable, and said, “From Aram has Balak brought me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the East. Come, curse Jacob for me. Come, defy Israel.
8 ¿Cómo puedo maldecir a quien Dios no ha maldecido? ¿Cómo puedo anunciar el mal contra quien el Señor no ha condenado?
8 How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? How shall I defy whom Yahweh has not defied?
9 Desde lo alto de las rocas lo veo; desde las colinas lo contemplo. Es un pueblo que vive apartado y no se considera como una más de las naciones.
9 For from the top of the rocks I see him. From the hills I see him. Behold, it is a people that dwells alone, and shall not be listed among the nations.
10 ¿Quién puede contar el polvo de Jacob o calcular siquiera una cuarta parte de Israel? ¡Que yo muera como mueren los justos y que mi final sea como el de ellos!»
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, or count the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous! Let my last end be like his!”
11 Balac dijo a Balaam: «¿Qué me has hecho? Te traje para maldecir a mis enemigos, ¡y los has bendecido!»
11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them altogether.”
12 Balaam respondió: «¿No debo decir exactamente lo que el Señor pone en mi boca?»
12 He answered and said, “Must I not take heed to speak that which Yahweh puts in my mouth?”
13 Balac le dijo: «Ven conmigo a otro lugar desde donde podrás verlos. Solo verás una parte de ellos, no a todos. Maldícelos por mí desde allí».
13 Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, where you may see them. You shall see just part of them, and shall not see them all. Curse them from there for me.”
14 Lo llevó al campo de Zofim, en la cima de Pisgá. Allí construyó siete altares y ofreció un becerro y un carnero sobre cada altar.
14 He took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.
15 Balaam dijo a Balac: «Quédate aquí junto a tu holocausto mientras yo voy a encontrarme con Dios allá».
15 He said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering, while I meet God over there.”
16 El Señor se encontró con Balaam, puso un mensaje en su boca y le dijo: «Vuelve a Balac y dale este mensaje».
16 Yahweh met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and say this.”
17 Balaam regresó y encontró a Balac junto a su holocausto, acompañado por los jefes de Moab. Balac le preguntó: «¿Qué ha dicho el Señor?»
17 He came to him, and behold, he was standing by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. Balak said to him, “What has Yahweh spoken?”
18 Entonces Balaam pronunció este mensaje: «Levántate, Balac, y escucha. Préstame atención, hijo de Zipor.
18 He took up his parable, and said, “Rise up, Balak, and hear! Listen to me, you son of Zippor.
19 Dios no es un hombre para que mienta, ni un ser humano para que cambie de parecer. Cuando él dice algo, ¿no lo hace? Cuando promete algo, ¿no lo cumple?
19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and he won’t do it? Or has he spoken, and he won’t make it good?
20 He recibido la orden de bendecir. Dios ha bendecido, y yo no puedo cambiarlo.
20 Behold, I have received a command to bless. He has blessed, and I can’t reverse it.
21 No ve maldad en Jacob ni contempla desgracia en Israel. El Señor su Dios está con ellos, y entre ellos se oye la aclamación a su Rey.
21 He has not seen iniquity in Jacob. Neither has he seen perverseness in Israel. Yahweh his God is with him. The shout of a king is among them.
22 Dios los sacó de Egipto; tienen la fuerza de un toro salvaje.
22 God brings them out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild ox.
23 No hay encantamiento que pueda contra Jacob ni adivinación que pueda contra Israel. Ahora se dirá de Jacob y de Israel: “¡Miren lo que Dios ha hecho!”
23 Surely there is no enchantment with Jacob; neither is there any divination with Israel. Now it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, ‘What has God done!’
24 Este pueblo se levanta como una leona y se alza como un león. No se acostará hasta haber devorado su presa y bebido la sangre de los que ha matado».
24 Behold, a people rises up as a lioness. As a lion he lifts himself up. He shall not lie down until he eats of the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain.”
25 Entonces Balac dijo a Balaam: «Si no vas a maldecirlos, ¡por lo menos no los bendigas!»
25 Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.”
26 Balaam respondió: «¿No te dije que debo hacer todo lo que el Señor me diga?»
26 But Balaam answered Balak, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘All that Yahweh speaks, that I must do’?”
27 Balac dijo a Balaam: «Ven, te llevaré a otro lugar. Tal vez a Dios le parezca bien que los maldigas por mí desde allí».
27 Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.”
28 Balac llevó a Balaam a la cima de Peor, desde donde se contempla el desierto.
28 Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that looks down on the desert.
29 Balaam dijo a Balac: «Constrúyeme aquí siete altares y prepara siete becerros y siete carneros».
29 Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here.”
30 Balac hizo lo que Balaam le pidió y ofreció un becerro y un carnero sobre cada altar.
30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.
