1 And it came to pass after these things that God tempted Abraham, and said to him, Abraham, Abraham; and he said, Lo! I [am here].
1 After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”
2 And he said, Take thy son, the beloved one, whom thou hast loved—Isaac, and go into the high land, and offer him there for a whole burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
2 He said, “Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.”
3 And Abraham rose up in the morning and saddled his ass, and he took with him two servants, and Isaac his son, and having split wood for a whole burnt offering, he arose and departed, and came to the place of which God spoke to him,
3 Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him.
4 on the third day; and Abraham having lifted up his eyes, saw the place afar off.
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far off.
5 And Abraham said to his servants, Sit ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will proceed thus far, and having worshiped we will return to you.
5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and come back to you.”
6 And Abraham took the wood of the whole burnt offering, and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took into his hands both the fire and the knife, and the two went together.
6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife. They both went together.
7 And Isaac said to Abraham his father, Father. And he said, What is it, son? And he said, Behold the fire and the wood, where is the sheep for a whole burnt offering?
7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
8 And Abraham said, God will provide himself a sheep for a whole burnt offering, [my] son. And both having gone together,
8 Abraham said, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together.
9 came to the place which God spoke of to him; and there Abraham built the altar, and laid the wood on it, and having bound the feet of Isaac his son together, he laid him on the altar upon the wood.
9 They came to the place which God had told him of. Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand to take the knife to slay his son.
10 Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to kill his son.
11 And an angel of the Lord called him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he said, Behold, I [am here].
11 Yahweh’s angel called to him out of the sky, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”
12 And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the child, neither do anything to him, for now I know that thou fearest God, and for my sake thou hast not spared thy beloved son.
12 He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and beheld, and lo! a ram caught by his horns in a plant of Sabec; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a whole burnt offering in the place of Isaac his son.
13 Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place, The Lord hath seen; that they might say today, In the Mount the Lord was seen.
14 Abraham called the name of that place “Yahweh Will Provide”. As it is said to this day, “On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.”
15 And an angel of the Lord called Abraham the second time out of heaven,
15 Yahweh’s angel called to Abraham a second time out of the sky,
16 saying, I have sworn by myself, says the Lord, because thou hast done this thing, and on mine account hast not spared thy beloved son,
16 and said, “‘I have sworn by myself,’ says Yahweh, ‘because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand which is by the shore of the sea, and thy seed shall inherit the cities of their enemies.
17 that I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your offspring greatly like the stars of the heavens, and like the sand which is on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gate of his enemies.
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast hearkened to my voice.
18 All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, because you have obeyed my voice.’”
19 And Abraham returned to his servants, and they arose and went together to the well of the oath; and Abraham dwelt at the well of the oath.
19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba. Abraham lived at Beersheba.
20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was reported to Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah herself too has born sons to Nahor thy brother,
20 After these things, Abraham was told, “Behold, Milcah, she also has borne children to your brother Nahor:
21 Uz the firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of the Syrians, and Chesed, and
21 Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,
22 Hazo and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel, and Bethuel begot Rebekah;
22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
23 these are eight sons, which Milcah bore to Nahor the brother of Abraham.
23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
24 And his concubine whose name was Reumah, she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.
24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

  1. Cita 22:17 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XXVI–XXXIII)

Nor are his other tribes in small glory, inasmuch as God had promised, "Thy seed shall be as the stars of heaven." All these, therefore, were highly honoured, and made great, not for their own sake, or for their own works, or for the righteousness which they wrought, but through the operation of His will.

  2. Cita 22:6 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Preface)

Righteously also do we, possessing the same faith as Abraham, and taking up the cross as Isaac did the wood, follow Him.

  3. Cita 22:18 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book X, Chapters 30–31)

This, I say, is the universal way for the deliverance of believers, concerning which the faithful Abraham received the divine assurance, "In thy seed shall all nations be blessed." He, indeed, was by birth a Chaldæan; but, that he might receive these great promises, and that there might be propagated from him a seed "disposed by angels in the hand …
