1 And God said to Jacob, Arise, go up to the place, Bethel, and dwell there; and make there an altar to the God that appeared to thee, when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.
1 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”
2 And Jacob said to his house, and to all that were with him, Remove the strange gods that are with you from the midst of you, and purify yourselves, and change your clothes.
2 Then Jacob said to his household, and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.
3 And let us rise and go up to Bethel, and let us there make an altar to God who hearkened to me in the day of calamity, who was with me, and preserved me throughout in the journey, by which I went.
3 Let’s arise, and go up to Bethel. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went.”
4 And they gave to Jacob the strange gods, which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the turpentine tree which is in Shechem, and destroyed them to this day.
4 They gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 So Israel departed from Shechem, and the fear of God was upon the cities round about them, and they did not pursue after the children of Israel.
5 They traveled, and a terror of God was on the cities that were around them, and they didn’t pursue the sons of Jacob.
6 And Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, which is Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
6 So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.
7 And he built there an altar, and called the name of the place Bethel; for there God appeared to him, when he fled from the face of his brother Esau.
7 He built an altar there, and called the place El Beth El; because there God was revealed to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 And Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and was buried below Bethel under the oak; and Jacob called its name, The Oak of Mourning.
8 Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; and its name was called Allon Bacuth.
9 And God appeared to Jacob once more in Luz, when he came out of Mesopotamia of Syria, and God blessed him.
9 God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan Aram, and blessed him.
10 And God said to him, Thy name shall not be called Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name; and he called his name Israel.
10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel.” He named him Israel.
11 And God said to him, I am thy God; increase and multiply; for nations and gatherings of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins.
11 God said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body.
12 And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I have given it to thee; and it shall come to pass that I will give this land also to thy seed after thee.
12 The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and to your offspring after you I will give the land.”
13 And God went up from him from the place where he spoke with him.
13 God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him.
14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God spoke with him, [even] a pillar of stone; and offered a libation upon it, and poured oil upon it.
14 Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it.
15 And Jacob called the name of the place in which God spoke with him, Bethel.
15 Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him “Bethel”.
16 And Jacob removed from Bethel, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder, and it came to pass when he drew nigh to Chabratha, to enter into Ephrath, Rachel travailed; and in her travail she was in hard labor.
16 They traveled from Bethel. There was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and Rachel travailed. She had hard labor.
17 And it came to pass in her hard labor, that the midwife said to her, Be of good courage, for thou shalt also have this son.
17 When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for now you will have another son.”
18 And it came to pass in her giving up the ghost (for she was dying), that she called his name, The son of my pain; but his father called his name Benjamin.
18 As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin.
19 So Rachel died, and was buried in the way of the course of Ephrath, this is Bethlehem.
19 Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem).
20 And Jacob set up a pillar on her tomb; this is the pillar on the tomb of Rachel, until this day.
20 Jacob set up a pillar on her grave. The same is the Pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. 21 Israel traveled, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
22 And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, the concubine of his father Jacob; and Israel heard, and the thing appeared grievous before him. And the sons of Jacob were twelve.
22 While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.
23 The sons of Leah, the firstborn of Jacob; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun.
23 The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
24 And the sons of Rachel; Joseph and Benjamin.
24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
25 And the sons of Bilhah, the handmaid of Rachel; Dan and Naphtali.
25 The sons of Bilhah (Rachel’s servant): Dan and Naphtali.
26 And the sons of Zilpah, the handmaid of Leah; Gad and Asher. These [are] the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.
26 The sons of Zilpah (Leah’s servant): Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.
27 And Jacob came to Isaac his father to Mamre, to a city of the plain; this is Hebron in the land of Canaan, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
27 Jacob came to Isaac his father, to Mamre, to Kiriath Arba (which is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac lived as foreigners.
28 And the days of Isaac which he lived were a hundred and eighty years.
28 The days of Isaac were one hundred eighty years.
29 And Isaac gave up the ghost and died, and was laid to his family, old and full of days; and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
29 Isaac gave up the spirit and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esau and Jacob, his sons, buried him.

… connection with which the mystery of the passion of the defect occurred, from which passion they maintain that all things visible were framed, they assert that is to be found strikingly and manifestly everywhere [in Scripture]. For they declare that the twelve sons of Jacob, from whom also sprung twelve tribes,-- the breastplate of the high priest, which bore twelve …

  2. Cita 35:10 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXII)

So then that Angel, who is understood to be the Lord Jesus, saith to Jacob, "Thou shalt not be any more called Jacob, but Israel shall thy name be," which is by interpretation, "Seeing God." After this He touched the sinew of his thigh, the broad part, that is, of the thigh, and it dried up; and Jacob became lame.

  3. Cita 35:19 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily IX)

Rachel was the mother of Benjamin, and on his death, they buried her in the horse-course that was near this place. The tomb then being near, and the portion pertaining unto Benjamin her infant (for Rama was of the tribe of Benjamin), from the head of the tribe first, and next from the place of her sepulture, He naturally denominates …
