1 And it came to pass after two full years that Pharaoh had a dream. He thought he stood upon [the bank of] the river.
1 Y ACONTECIÓ que pasados dos años tuvo Faraón un sueño: Parecíale que estaba junto al río;
1 At the end of two full years, Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he stood by the river.
2 And lo, there came up as it were out of the river seven cows, fair in appearance, and choice of flesh, and they fed on the sedge.
2 Behold, seven cattle came up out of the river. They were sleek and fat, and they fed in the marsh grass.
3 And other seven cows came up after these out of the river, ill-favored and lean-fleshed, and fed by the [other] cows on the bank of the river.
3 Behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ugly and thin, and stood by the other cattle on the brink of the river.
4 And the seven ill-favored and lean cows devoured the seven well-favored and choice-fleshed cows; and Pharaoh awoke.
4 The ugly and thin cattle ate up the seven sleek and fat cattle. So Pharaoh awoke.
5 And he dreamed again. And, behold, seven ears came up on one stalk, choice and good.
5 He slept and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, healthy and good.
6 And, behold, seven ears thin and blasted with the wind, grew up after them.
6 Behold, seven heads of grain, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them.
7 And the seven thin ears and blasted with the wind devoured the seven choice and full ears; and Pharaoh awoke, and it was a dream.
7 Y las siete espigas menudas devoraban á las siete espigas gruesas y llenas. Y despertó Faraón, y he aquí que era sueño.
7 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy and full ears. Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.
8 And it was morning, and his soul was troubled; and he sent and called all the interpreters of Egypt, and all her wise men; and Pharaoh related to them his dream, and there was no one to interpret it to Pharaoh.
8 In the morning, his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt’s magicians and wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.
9 And the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, I this day remember my fault:
9 Then the chief cup bearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “I remember my faults today.
10 Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put us in prison in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker.
10 Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, with the chief baker.
11 And we had a dream both in one night, I and he; we saw, each according to his dream.
11 We dreamed a dream in one night, he and I. Each man dreamed according to the interpretation of his dream.
12 And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew servant of the captain of the guard; and we related to him [our dreams], and he interpreted [them] to us.
12 There was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams. He interpreted to each man according to his dream.
13 And it came to pass, as he interpreted them to us, so also it happened, both that I was restored to my office, and that he was hanged.
13 As he interpreted to us, so it was. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.”
14 And Pharaoh having sent, called Joseph; and they brought him out from the prison, and shaved him, and changed his dress, and he came to Pharaoh.
14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came in to Pharaoh.
15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have seen a vision, and there is no one to interpret it; but I have heard say concerning thee that thou didst hear dreams and interpret them.
15 Y dijo Faraón á José: Yo he tenido un sueño, y no hay quien lo declare; mas he oído decir de ti, que oyes sueños para declararlos.
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh and said, Without God an answer of safety shall not be given to Pharaoh.
16 Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
17 And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, In my dream methought I stood by the bank of the river;
17 Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, “In my dream, behold, I stood on the brink of the river;
18 and there came up as it were out of the river, seven cows well-favored and choice-fleshed, and they fed on the sedge.
18 and behold, seven fat and sleek cattle came up out of the river. They fed in the marsh grass;
19 And behold seven other cows came up after them out of the river, evil and ill-favored and lean-fleshed, such that I never saw worse in all the land of Egypt.
19 and behold, seven other cattle came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for ugliness.
20 And the seven ill-favored and thin cows ate up the seven first good and choice cows.
20 Y las vacas flacas y feas devoraban á las siete primeras vacas gruesas:
20 The thin and ugly cattle ate up the first seven fat cattle;
21 And they went into their bellies; and it was not perceptible that they had gone into their bellies, and their appearance was ill-favored, as also at the beginning; and after I awoke I slept,
21 and when they had eaten them up, it couldn’t be known that they had eaten them, but they were still ugly, as at the beginning. So I awoke.
22 and saw again in my sleep, and as it were seven ears came up on one stem, full and good.
22 Vi también soñando, que siete espigas subían en una misma caña llenas y hermosas;
22 I saw in my dream, and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, full and good;
23 And other seven ears, thin and blasted with the wind, sprang up close to them.
23 and behold, seven heads of grain, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them.
24 And the seven thin and blasted ears devoured the seven fine and full ears: so I spoke to the interpreters, and there was no one to explain it to me.
24 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads of grain. I told it to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”
25 And Joseph said to Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one; whatever God does, he has shown to Pharaoh.
25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dream of Pharaoh is one. What God is about to do he has declared to Pharaoh.
26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the dream of Pharaoh is one.
26 The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good heads of grain are seven years. The dream is one.
27 And the seven thin kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven thin and blasted ears are seven years; there shall be seven years of famine.
27 The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine.
28 And as for the word which I have told Pharaoh, whatsoever God intends to do, he has shown to Pharaoh:
28 That is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.
29 behold, for seven years there is coming great plenty in all the land of Egypt.
29 Behold, seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt are coming.
30 But there shall come seven years of famine after these, and they shall forget the plenty that shall be in all Egypt, and the famine shall consume the land.
30 Y levantarse han tras ellos siete años de hambre; y toda la hartura será olvidada en la tierra de Egipto; y el hambre consumirá la tierra;
30 Seven years of famine will arise after them, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land,
31 And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of the famine that shall be after this, for it shall be very grievous.
31 and the plenty will not be known in the land by reason of that famine which follows; for it will be very grievous.
32 And concerning the repetition of the dream to Pharaoh twice, [it is] because the saying which is from God shall be true, and God will hasten to accomplish it.
32 The dream was doubled to Pharaoh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
33 Now then, look out a wise and prudent man, and set him over the land of Egypt.
33 “Now therefore let Pharaoh look for a discreet and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt.
34 And let Pharaoh make and appoint local governors over the land; and let them take up a fifth part of all the produce of the land of Egypt for the seven years of the plenty.
34 Haga [esto] Faraón, y ponga gobernadores sobre el país, y quinte la tierra de Egipto en los siete años de la hartura;
34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt’s produce in the seven plenteous years.
35 And let them gather all the food of these seven good years that are coming, and let the corn be gathered under the hand of Pharaoh; let food be kept in the cities.
35 Let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and store grain under the hand of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it.
36 And the stored food shall be for the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; and the land shall not be utterly destroyed by the famine.
36 The food will be to supply the land against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Egypt; so that the land will not perish through the famine.”
37 And the word was pleasing in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of all his servants.
37 The thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.
38 And Pharaoh said to all his servants, Shall we find such a man as this, who has the Spirit of God in him?
38 Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?”
39 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Since God has shown thee all these things, there is not a wiser or more prudent man than thou.
39 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Because God has shown you all of this, there is no one so discreet and wise as you.
40 Thou shalt be over my house, and all my people shall be obedient to thy word; only in the throne will I excel thee.
40 You shall be over my house. All my people will be ruled according to your word. Only in the throne I will be greater than you.”
41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Behold, I set thee this day over all the land of Egypt.
41 Dijo más Faraón á José: He aquí yo te he puesto sobre toda la tierra de Egipto.
41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
42 And Pharaoh took his ring off his hand, and put it on the hand of Joseph, and put on him a robe of fine linen, and put a necklace of gold about his neck.
42 Entonces Faraón quitó su anillo de su mano, y púsolo en la mano de José, é hízole vestir de ropas de lino finísimo, y puso un collar de oro en su cuello;
42 Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck.
43 And he mounted him on the second of his chariots, and a herald made proclamation before him; and he set him over all the land of Egypt.
43 He made him ride in the second chariot which he had. They cried before him, “Bow the knee!” He set him over all the land of Egypt.
44 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I am Pharaoh; without thee no one shall lift up his hand on all the land of Egypt.
44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh. Without you, no man shall lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 And Pharaoh called the name of Joseph, Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, to wife.
45 Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-Paneah. He gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went through all the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.
47 And the land produced, in the seven years of plenty, [whole] handfuls [of corn].
47 In the seven plenteous years the earth produced abundantly.
48 And he gathered all the food of the seven years, in which was the plenty in the land of Egypt; and he laid up the food in the cities; the food of the fields of a city round about it he laid up in it.
48 He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities. He stored food in each city from the fields around that city.
49 And Joseph gathered very much corn as the sand of the sea, until it could not be numbered, for there was no number [of it].
49 Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number.
50 And to Joseph were born two sons, before the seven years of famine came, which Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore to him.
50 To Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him.
51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn, Manasseh; For God, [said he], has made me forget all my toils, and all my father’s house.
51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, “For”, he said, “God has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.”
52 And he called the name of the second, Ephraim; For God, [said he], has increased me in the land of my humiliation.
52 The name of the second, he called Ephraim: “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
53 And the seven years of plenty passed away, which were in the land of Egypt.
53 The seven years of plenty, that were in the land of Egypt, came to an end.
54 And the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph said; and there was a famine in all the land; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
54 The seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
55 And all the land of Egypt was hungry; and the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, Go to Joseph, and do whatsoever he shall tell you.
55 When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do.”
56 And the famine was on the face of all the earth; and Joseph opened all the granaries, and sold to all the Egyptians.
56 The famine was over all the surface of the earth. Joseph opened all the store houses, and sold to the Egyptians. The famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
57 And all countries came to Egypt to buy of Joseph, for the famine prevailed in all the earth.
57 All countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth.

  1. Cita 41:38 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XVI)

    He also came down upon all righteous men and Prophets; Enos, I mean, and Enoch, and Noah, and the rest; upon Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for as regards Joseph, even Pharaoh perceived that he had the Spirit of God within him.
