1 For the end, a Psalm of David, [an utterance] of extreme fear.
·
·
2 O Lord, I have hoped in thee; let me never be ashamed: Deliver me in thy righteousness and rescue me.
31:1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. In you, Yahweh, I take refuge. Let me never be disappointed. Deliver me in your righteousness.
3 Incline thine ear to me; Make haste to rescue me: Be thou to me for a protecting God, And for a house of refuge to save me.
31:2 Bow down your ear to me. Deliver me speedily. Be to me a strong rock, a house of defense to save me.
4 For thou art my strength and my refuge; And thou shalt guide me for thy name’s sake, and maintain me.
31:3 For you are my rock and my fortress, therefore for your name’s sake lead me and guide me.
5 Thou shalt bring me out of the snare which they have hidden for me; For thou, O Lord, art my defender.
31:4 Pluck me out of the net that they have laid secretly for me, for you are my stronghold.
6 Into thy hands I will commit my spirit: Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.
31:5 En tu mano encomiendo mi espíritu: tú me has redimido, oh Jehová, Dios de verdad.
31:5 Into your hand I commend my spirit. You redeem me, Yahweh, God of truth.
7 Thou hast hated them that idly persist in vanities: But I have hoped in the Lord.
31:6 I hate those who regard lying vanities, but I trust in Yahweh.
8 I will exult and be glad in thy mercy: For thou hast looked upon mine affliction; Thou hast saved my soul from distresses.
31:7 Me gozaré y alegraré en tu misericordia; porque has visto mi aflicción; has conocido mi alma en las angustias.
31:7 I will be glad and rejoice in your loving kindness, for you have seen my affliction. You have known my soul in adversities.
9 And thou hast not shut me up into the hands of the enemy: Thou hast set my feet in a wide place.
31:8 You have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a large place.
10 Pity me, O Lord, for I am afflicted: My eye is troubled with indignation, My soul and my belly.
31:9 Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am in distress. My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief.
11 For my life is spent with grief, And my years with groanings: My strength has been weakened through poverty, And my bones are troubled.
31:10 For my life is spent with sorrow, my years with sighing. My strength fails because of my iniquity. My bones are wasted away.
12 I became a reproach among all mine enemies, But exceedingly so to my neighbors, And a fear to mine acquaintance: They that saw me without fled from me.
31:11 Because of all my adversaries I have become utterly contemptible to my neighbors, a horror to my acquaintances. Those who saw me on the street fled from me.
13 I have been forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am become as a broken vessel.
31:12 He sido olvidado de [su] corazón como un muerto: he venido á ser como un vaso perdido.
31:12 I am forgotten from their hearts like a dead man. I am like broken pottery.
14 For I heard the slander of many that dwelt round about: When they were gathered together against me, They took counsel to take my life.
31:13 For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side, while they conspire together against me, they plot to take away my life.
15 But I hoped in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God.
31:14 Mas yo en ti confié, oh Jehová: yo dije: Dios mío eres tú.
31:14 But I trust in you, Yahweh. I said, “You are my God.”
16 My lots are in thy hands: Deliver me from the hand of mine enemies,
31:15 My times are in your hand. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.
17 And from them that persecute me. Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: Save me in thy mercy.
31:16 Make your face to shine on your servant. Save me in your loving kindness.
18 O Lord, let me not be ashamed, for I have called upon thee: Let the ungodly be ashamed, and brought down to Hades.
31:17 Let me not be disappointed, Yahweh, for I have called on you. Let the wicked be disappointed. Let them be silent in Sheol.
19 Let the deceitful lips become dumb, Which speak iniquity against the righteous With pride and scorn.
31:18 Let the lying lips be mute, which speak against the righteous insolently, with pride and contempt.
20 How abundant is the multitude of thy goodness, O Lord, Which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee! Thou hast wrought [it] out for them that hope on thee, In the presence of the sons of men.
31:19 Oh how great is your goodness, which you have laid up for those who fear you, which you have worked for those who take refuge in you, before the sons of men!
21 Thou wilt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the vexation of man: Thou wilt screen them in a tabernacle from the contradiction of tongues.
31:20 In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man. You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues.
22 Blessed be the Lord: for he has magnified his mercy in a fortified city.
31:21 Praise be to Yahweh, for he has shown me his marvelous loving kindness in a strong city.
23 But I said in my extreme fear, I am cast out from the sight of thine eyes: Therefore thou didst hearken, O Lord, to the voice of my supplication When I cried to thee.
31:22 As for me, I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before your eyes.” Nevertheless you heard the voice of my petitions when I cried to you.
24 Love the Lord, all ye his saints: For the Lord seeks for truth, And renders [a reward] to them that deal very proudly.
31:23 Oh love Yahweh, all you his saints! Yahweh preserves the faithful, and fully recompenses him who behaves arrogantly.
25 Be of good courage, and let your heart be strengthened, All ye that hope in the Lord.
31:24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in Yahweh.

  3. Cita 31:19 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 17–19)

However, they think that the divine oracles are not altogether silent on this point; for they ask to what purpose is it said, "How great is Thy goodness which Thou hast hidden for them that fear Thee," if it be not to teach us that the great and hidden sweetness of God's mercy is concealed in order that men may …

  4. Cita 31:19 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 22–24)

But that these perversely compassionate persons may see what is the purport of these words, "How great is the abundance of Thy sweetness, Lord, which Thou hast hidden for them that fear Thee," let them read what follows: "And Thou hast perfected it for them that hope in Thee." For what means, "Thou hast hidden it for them that fear …
